She was born in New York City but renounced her U.S. citizenship to share the Danish citizenship of her second husband, Count Kurt von Haugwitz-Reventlow. She moved back to the U.S. during her marriage to actor Cary Grant. Later she became a citizen of the Dominican Republic during her fifth marriage to Porfirio Rubirosa.
