Michelle Obama brings daughters Malia, left, and Sasha on stage at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver
Having a birthday on July 4th means Malia has front-row seats to the White House fireworks on the South Lawn. The sisters, who attend Sidwell Friends, volunteer in soup kitchens and have accompanied their mother, First Lady Michelle Obama, and grandmother on a trip to Africa to learn more about children affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. On the home front, the girls still have to make their beds. In the summer, they vacation in Hawaii and on Martha’s Vineyard. After Obama won the 2008 election, Senator Ted Kennedy gave the girls a six-month-old Portuguese Water Dog, which they named Bo. In May 2012, the President said that his daughters have influenced his views on same-sex marriage and the morning-after pill.
