Caroline Kennedy, daughter of John F. Kennedy, kisses her newborn brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., in 1961
When you are the President’s daughter, you can call the North Pole directly. One Christmas, Caroline Kennedy shared her wish list with the White House switchboard operator, who pretended to be Mrs. Claus. To maximize her children’s privacy, First Lady Jackie set up a nursery school in the residence’s solarium for Caroline, her younger brother John-John, and 15 other children. Politicians showered Caroline with presents; the wife of French President Charles de Gaulle gave the First Daughter a giant dollhouse, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev gave her a dog named Pushinka, and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson gave her a Shetland pony named Macaroni. All the attention made her very comfortable talking to strangers: She once waltzed into a press conference in her mother’s high heels. Another time, when she met the bald-headed House speaker Sam Rayburn, she asked,“Why won’t hair grow for you?”
