Clinton Conference Call 3/7/08; Notes

Bumped this up from the “Questions” post. Will update with more notes after the call is over:

In the preamble before questions, Rep. Schultz spoke second, but was the first to call for Samantha “That’s Off the Record” Power to resign. My notes:

sen obama set a tone for this campaign… it’s one thing for candidates to talk about the differences… but for the candidate or a sr advisor to degenerate into name calling… it’s below the belt, it’s out of bounds… it’s not appropriate for a sr advisor to continue to be associated with a candidate for potus

Rep. Meeks just made the argument even more forcefully, but I was busy writing this and so don’t have my notes.

UPDATE: KT reminds me that Power is also a Time columnist.

More notes after the jump. Audio will arrive ASAP.

First, my question: Your response to the Canadian government’s insistence that you, too, told them to take criticism with a “grain of salt”? I now wish I’d gone with something about how some of Rezko’s co-defendents are Hillary supporters. Wolfson was able to do a “asked and answered” dodge and I still haven’t figured out how to stay on the line for a follow up. Rats. (He also, I think facetiously, congratulated me on my “close coverage of these calls.” I am really not very cool.) I couldn’t stay to the end of the call, sorry! Left after 37 minutes.

Wolfson on “monster” comment: many have found objectionable and over the line

Jackson Lee: personal attacks are not the way to convince voters

Schultz: sen o set a tone for this campaign… it’s one thing for candidates to talk about the differences… but for the candidate or a sr advisor to degenerate into name calling… it’s below the belt, it’s out of bounds… it’s not appropriate for a sr advisor to continue to be associated with a candidate for potus

HW: “i did not say that Obama was like Ken Starr…. i do not think this is same thing… had i or anyone on this campaign used the word that Ms. Powers used, we would no longer be on this campaign…”

Schultz: there are no do overs in politics… you don’t keep having them and having them until you get the result you want.. you can’t start the general election with one hand tied behind your back which is what you’d be doing if you disenfranchise Florida and Michigan

[about how it took days for bob johnson to apologize] We did it in Iowa and in NH, there are examples where decisive, clear actions were made to separate someone from the campaign when they said something over the line… i don’t honestly even remember whether he apologized or not….

[In response to my question, Wolfson] It’s been asked and answered; there’s a memo.. more or less contemporaneous… that said a senior advisor asked them to take his criticism with a “grain of salt” … and when asked about that the campaign said that the conversation had not taken place and then had to retract it… i would encourage everyone to go to the FactHub to find out more.
