Senate Iraq vote: McCain to be a no-show

The AP reports that while all the other presidential hopefuls have rejuggled their weekend (read: campaign) schedules to make tomorrow’s Senate vote on Iraq, John McCain is proceeding as scheduled to Iowa. His spokeswoman calls the vote a “political stunt” by Majority Leader Harry Reid.

House Iraq Vote

After days of intense and emotional debate, the House, as expected, has passed a non-binding resolution opposing President Bush’s plan to deploy more than 21,000 additional troops to Iraq. The final tally was 246-182. However, only 17 Republicans broke ranks with the President to support the Democratic resolution. (Two Democrats sided …

A fake quote divided against itself…

Lots of
bloggers
are having fun this morning with GOP Rep. Don Young using this made-up quote from Abraham Lincoln to attack those on the other side who are opposing the surge in Iraq:

Congressmen who willfully take action during wartime that damage morale
and undermine the military are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled

Romney Announces

I think I’m going to suggest that the High Sheriffs here at TIME quit sending political reporters to these presidential announcements. Our theater critics could probably do a better job, considering that these events tend to be long on symbolism and showmanship, and virtually empty of substance or political import. You can always spot …

Since you ask…

Commenter Terrapin has suggested:

I really do want to have a civil discussion about the way in which the GOP Smear Against the Majority Leader was handled by the press (meaning: you). This is purely for informational purposes only and not to cast any aspersions. … We want to how you heard about this, what calls you made to check up on

McCain vs. McCain

Commenters to this blog never tire of complaining that the much-reviled MSM does not point out the inconsistencies between John McCain’s reformer image and his current campaign tactics. To me, that suggests they are not reading the MSM. In fact, a major storyline of this campaign is the fight between McCain and, well, McCain. I wrote …

UPDATE: Air Pelosi

Will be interesting to see what the RNC has to say about this, just in from House Sergeant of Arms Bill Livingood (though the delay in getting this statement out makes you wonder about the reflexes of the Pelosi shop):

For Immediate Release

February 8, 2007

As the Sergeant at Arms, I have the responsibility to ensure the security of …

Air Pelosi: Having It Both Ways

None other than White House Press Secretary Tony Snow has come to the defense of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pronouncing the flap over her use of a government plane to fly back and forth from her San Francisco a nontroversy:

This is a silly story, and I think it’s been unfair to the speaker.

Snow elaborated:

We think it’s important that the

John Edwards and the Bloggers: Can This Marriage Be Saved?

My colleague Massimo Calabresi has this story in the latest issue of the dead-tree magazine regarding the controversy surrounding John Edwards and the bloggers he has hired. Meanwhile, the Edwards campaign a few minutes ago issued this ratherly oddly worded statement, which would suggest that yesterday’s reports of their firing were …

Senate Iraq Debate: RIP (for now)

One commenter to an earlier post wants to know where things stand with the debate over the Senate Iraq resolution. Good question. Here’s the read I get from Harry Reid’s office:

Absent what a Reid aide calls “a stunning turn of events,” it’s over for the time being, although the House expects to take it up next week. This, of course, …
