Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney talks with members of his staff aboard his campaign plane on Aug. 10, 2012 in flight from Mass. to Va.

Mitt Romney will announce his vice presidential pick Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va., his campaign said late Friday night.

After weeks of anticipation, Romney’s campaign released a statement after 11 p.m. Friday night saying that the presumptive Republican nominee would unveil his selection early Saturday morning during a scheduled tour of the U.S.S. Wisconsin, a World War II era battleship in this southern Virginia port city.

Speculation late Friday night centered on Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, the 42-year old chairman of the House Budget Committee whose vision for entitlement reform has enchanted conservatives. The conservative Weekly Standard reported Friday night that the likeliest choice was Ryan, a seven-term Congressman whose budget blueprint has made him a lionized figure in the GOP and a lightning rod for Democrats. For Romney, picking Ryan would be a uncharacteristically high-risk move that would energize conservatives. It might also be taken as a sign that Romney, who has lost ground in recent national polls, felt the need to shake up the race.

The announcement will kick off a four-day bus tour through a quarter of pivotal swing states, which is designed to highlight “the Romney plan for a stronger middle class.”

Once again, Mitt Romney takes expedience over strategic.  Conventional wisdom said he was going to wait for the end of the Olympics.  Then he has one bad week so he not only rushes the decision..... he picks a firebrand.  This will mean a bad week for Obama, but I think it'll be better long-term for Obama.

Now the Dems just need another shoe to drop on the taxes thing and Romney will be out of trump cards.

Paul Ayn Rand Ryan.  Bill Kristol does it again.

Speechless.   Scary.

Well no wonder Romney is not concerned about the poor or elderly. He is counting on Ryan to take care of all that...just not in a good way. Yeah, that will really fix that old safety net, won't it?

I'm waiting for the debates where he is asked how HE likes his government-provided health care and would he be willing to give it, like he is proposing for the rest of the "unwashed".

I know Ryan's plan only affects under 55 year olds, but when the message is going to be the end of Medicare as we know it, then I bet Florida has just because a lot easier for the president. Really dumb, Gov.

Do you really think that the Millenials want to hear that, after the GOP messed up the economy and their youth so badly that their generation doesn't have jobs, the GOP is now going to mess up their old age, too?

No. But apparently the Republicans have written off Millenials (along with Latinos and women) and hope that Americans are too exhausted to vote while they can gin up their base and hope to win everything so that they can radically cut taxes and services in 2013-14 and impose Prop 13 super-majority laws.. It won't work, but it's conservatives last hope before they face demographic extinction.

I get the nagging impression the man looks tacky, sweaty and unwashed even after a shower. Would be hard watching him in the news for at least four years.

Don't worry - highly unlikely you'll be seeing him much in 2013.

After that, all bets are off.  He's the GOP old guard's fav for 2016.

Well, Obama did say that for a birthday present he'd like to win Florida.

Who knew that it would be Mitt doing the gift wrapping?
