The Chiaroscuro Hellscape That Will Be Nevada

As Harry Reid and Sharron Angle’s closing ads tell it, Silver Staters are in for a nightmarish November 3.

So it goes in a race where majorities have an unfavorable view of both incumbent and challenger, who’ve been deadlocked in the polls, bloodying each other for months.

(Reid ad via Greg Sargent, read Scherer on that Angle ad here.)

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of  a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty number two), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay marriage advocates—as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

The nifty thing on Reid’s ad is each claim has a factcheck citation. As opposed to the unverified lies in the other.

So are the illegals coming to join gangs or for the free college tuition?

  • lizziefromcanada

I know I don’t have the right to vote in the US and I know I have no right to meddle in an American election but I just cannot believe that Angle will be possibly elected. I am just flabberghasted

  • newfreedomblog

Believe it lizziefromcanada!! It is what will be and no matter how much you try to meddle, it will happen.

  • newfreedomblog

Oh lizziefromcanada, can we send good time Harry up your way in Canada after he looses? We are throwing out our trash here in America!!

  • grape_crush

Is that the only thing Angle has to campaign on? Hyper-exaggerated Fear of a Latino Planet?

They’ve kinda-sorta-but-not-really moved on from demonizing blacks and gays a couple of decades ago to demonizing latinos and Muslims.

I’d trade Rusty for Lizzie any day of the week. How about them apples? Then again, I wouldn’t want to do that to our good neighbor Canada. :/

  • lizziefromcanada

I propose an exchange. To start with, we’ll send you our PM and the minister of research and sciences, who is a creationnist.

Just want you to notice that Angle used Canadians in her campaign. I am quite insulted to be used by her.

    After Reid looses what?

  • doddeb

    lizziefromcanada,
I totally understand your frustration. It’s like when you see a normally rational friend engaging in crazy, self-destructive behavior: with every fiber of your being you want to intervene and help. Even when it’s not possible. Most of us here appreciate your concern and share your disbelief that our politics could descend to this level.
    .
And to Adam Sorenson: “Chiaroscuro Hellscape?” Great title!

OT, but nice to see more evidence that the Tea Party whiners always see themselves as the victim — even after they’ve been filmed stomping on a woman’s head.

Tim Profitt — the former Rand Paul volunteer who stomped on the head of a MoveOn activist — told told local CBS station WKYT that he wants an apology from the woman he stomped and that she started the whole thing.

“I don’t think it’s that big of a deal,” Profitt said. “I would like for her to apologize to me to be honest with you.”

“So are the illegals coming to join gangs or for the free college tuition?”
    .
    LOL!
    .
I guess the Crypts, the Bloods and MS13 really are morphing from street gang to a fraternity.

    Lizzie,
    .
First, having an opinion and expressing it is, absolutely not “meddling” so, no reasonable person would mind at all. (This isn’t to say that wingnuts won’t mind, but, they are not reasonable, just confused, angry and woefully misinformed).
    .
Second, I was at a wedding this Summer where one of my relatives married a really great guy from Canada (where they had been living together for a few years) and the groom’s side of the family were asking me about (in far more polite terms) WTF was going on in the US with how we left ourselves open for the mortgage bubble, the financial meltdown and now have our right wing ready to try and bring us back to those destructive ways.
    .
Ironically, the bride’s father (one of my relatives) was one of those conservatives (but, I guess they knew not to talk politics too much with him) was one of those conservatives. (He has a sense of humor about politics and almost everything else, but, I don’t expect him to agree with anybody except conservatives.)
    .
It must be hard to watch from Canada, but, it is even harder to watch from here in the US where some of these lunatics may end up in office.

    “After Reid looses what?”
    .
After Reid loses his lunch from finding out that 40% of his state is as insane as Rusty.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

How about a four for one trade?
    .
In exchange for Lizzie, we give Canada Rusty, Freakinpa, Dr Earl Mengele and 3XFire3?
    .
Then, again, I believe there are international laws against exporting toxic waste across international borders, but, then again, America just writes international laws, we don’t follow them anymore (following the rules we wright is a “socialist” “hating America” kind of a thing Republicans are against).

    Hellscape. I like it…

  • apr2563

newrusty evidently feels only “real” Americans can have opinions. Canada, another country on the American continent is too foreign for him. After all nothing that happens in the US effects Canada. Lizzie please keep meddling. I lived on the Canadian/US border for a number years. We did mutual meddling at the pubs and taverns in our respective countries. Great fun.

Send ‘em to China instead as part of a deal to avoid a currency war.

  • shepherdwong

As usual, commentors forced to do the job that craven establishment “journalists” are paid to do but won’t.

    “Send ‘em to China instead…”
    .
China would fire up their nukes if we sent them.
    .
    LOL
    .
Canada is more mellow than that. They might, instead, build a wall to keep out more Americans if we sent them there.

I really don’t understand anyone voting for Angle who’s given it any thought. Even Republican politicians in Nevada can’t stand her, and joke about how votes in the Legislature there would always go 44-to-Angle (with 45 in the Legislature, ‘natch).
    .
That’s amusing, but only because her protest vote (against everything) was meaningless. But in the U.S. Senate she can, and most likely will, put a hold on every single bill. Every one. In the Senate, a single evil or deranged Senator can stop every single bill unless his or her demands are met elsewhere (See: Jim DeMint, Jim Bunning), with no penalty except being disliked. Her prior behavior has demonstrated her intent, and willingness to be loathed, to do just that.
    .
Who could possibly want that? I’m guessing most Nevadans don’t, but many will still vote for her without really thinking it through, due to primitive tribalism or hatred of Harry Reid.
    .
God help us if she wins.

    Well said.
