The Real McChrystal Problem

While Stanley McChrystal and his inner circle may be quick to mock and insult senior Obama administration officials, that explosive Rolling Stone article featured very little substantive disagreement between McChrystal’s team and President Obama’s stated Afghanistan strategy. But in reality the military is awfully skeptical of Obama’s July 2011 target date to begin drawing down U.S. troops from the country–a point the article’s author, Michael Hastings, spotlighted in a radio interview this morning. Here’s a key passage from his article:

Instead of beginning to withdraw troops next year, as Obama promised, the military hopes to ramp up its counterinsurgency campaign even further. “There’s a possibility we could ask for another surge of U.S. forces next summer if we see success here,” a senior military official in Kabul tells me.

Yes, and I suspect we may see another surge request–or at least a request for nothing more than a token draw down–regardless of whether the war effort is succeeding. (The Iraq surge, after all, was an admission of failure–not an effort to build on success.) That may not be a unanimous view within the military, but I think it’s well-enough represented that even sacking McChrystal won’t resolve this fundamental tension. As summer 2011 approaches, the stakes are going to be a lot higher than the name-calling captured by Rolling Stone.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    .
Jesus on a Predator drone, could someone please explain to “the military” that they don’t have a goddamned thing to say about it. Unless they’d like to go work for some other country, that is. I hear Burma is hiring.

Doesn’t McChrystal know that he can only say such things of a Republican? Had McChrstyal said such things of a Republican president, he would be hailed by every anti-military leftist political activist at every anti-military leftist political advocacy group from ABC to NBC to CBS to PBS to NPR to CNN to A-MessNBC to the New York Times-Demcrat to the Washington Post-Democrat to the Associated (with terrorists) Press to …. Had McChrystal said such things of a Republican president, every said leftist political activist at every said leftist political advocacy group would be hailing McChrystal as a wise American hero who was “speaking truth to power”!

It needs to be repeatedly stressed that the target audience for the drawdown date includes the current Afghani government. As long as they can count on US troops to do all the heavy lifting, there is absolutely no incentive for them to do anything but remain hunkered down.
    .
Maybe the date isn’t hard and fast. But if we don’t put it out there, then the ‘quagmire’ status is guaranteed.
    .
As the first thread of the day indicates, there’s a lot of effing stupidity out there on that very point.

  • sevenoaks07

The “real” problem is a rush to judgement by all sides. let the General meet with officials and the President and then await the result. All this banging about and breathless stuff is of little use since we are engaged in a war and we have troops on the ground.

No one is indispensable. But the larger protection of our troops on the ground and a better statement of their mission and the means to advance it are important. Those who have advised against this war have a point about the pointlessness of it thus far. We simply have caused too many civilian casualties to earn the trust or confidence of the locals.

In a sentence this is a mess and no amount of bloviating is going to change it.

Speaking for Obama today, Robert Gibbs said today that McChrystal may not be “capable and mature enough” for the mission. Got that? The anti-military dimwit Robert Gibbs said that McChrystal may not be “capable and mature enough” for the mission! http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/06/white-house-questions-mcchrystals-judgment-maturity.html

That’s just what we need. A bunch of incapable, unqualified, immature children like Gibbs and Obama passing judgment on members of the United States military!

  • nflfoghorn

By your implication all members of the military are God’s gift to mankind. No, that’s just your hatred for this administration talking. Never mind.

  • old1conserve

President Obama asked the Pentagon if the Afghan war could be won and what resources were needed. After a discussion period, both parties came to an agreement. They would try a surge for 18 months with a warning to the Afghan government that progress must be made for us stay in the game.

The Afghan leader has decided to call their bluff and behave badly or naturally. Without the leadership and support of the Afghan government, the US and UN troops can take areas on a temporary basis. The military’s strategy requires that living conditions improve for the Afghans.

It appears that our strategy is fated for failure. Call in Richard Nixon to end the stupid war.

Frankly, when I read the article, immaturity was exactly my impression of the smart mouth remarks and demeanor of McChrystal and his staff. It reads like jr. high banter, even to the nickname of The Boss. He doesn’t want to sit at the grown up table in Paris, but he does and then the gang go have real fun at a beer joint more to their frat rat leanings. And spare me the bogus macho 4 hours sleep, 7 hour run, 1 meal a day schtick.
    .
In the radio interview, Hastings mostly is concerned with the lack of cohesion in the war effort than with the remarks. He dismissed the title of the article…he doesn’t write the title, the editor does.
    .
Beyond the current storm it is hoped that attention will focus on that more important element and the decision to withdraw will follow. I won’t hold my breath.

    ——–
The real problem is that McChrystal’s plan and execution in Afghanistan is a disaster.

McChrystal… is startling to look like a deer wondering what that red dot halfway up his muzzle might be. He’s the prime candidate for being the guy without a place to sit when the music stops.

    .
Good, let’s hope that his replacement has a better plan to protect US citizens: get out.

As we enter the age of austerity and fiscal responsibility I don’t see how the war can be ramped up even further. After-all, military spending is just another form of government stimulus.

  • acameronw

A four star general who lets himself be put in this position deserves to have his maturity and capability called into question. I’m not doubting his competence in the field or his dedication to the mission, but this becomes an issue of using common sense.

And textee, sorry you have a problem with Barack Obama “passing judgment” on MacChrystal, but he’s THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. If you’d like to question the wisdom of civilian control of the military, maybe you should brush up on South American history. (And take a glance at the Constitution while you’re at it.)

The real McChrystal problem is that after he resigns the Op Ed pages will be cluttered with right-wingers declaring him to be the perfect Republican candidate for 2012. Fortunately, this problem will disappear after about ten days as they discover another bright shiny candidate.

  • pdzxc

I think this is just a cry for help from General McChrystal. He obviously feels neglected and misunderstood by the President & Vice President, who have been too busy with health care and BP to spend any quality time with him. Under the circumstances, I can’t say I would feel any different. He’s been selflessly slaving away half-way around the world for months at a time eating only one meal a day and getting less than 5 hours sleep fighting to keep the Taliban from taking over the USA and Obama hardly notices. Biden has a squirt gun picnic for the MSM but does he invite Stanley? Nope. So can you blame the guy for striking out? I think they need to get Kerry, McCain, Eichenberry, Holden, Biden and Obama into a room together with the General for a big group hug. They all know they really love each other and that they can’t let running the country, winning a war or stopping the leak get in the way of their wonderful relationships. This happens to most of us at some point in our lives. I think they can work it out.

Has anyone else noticed the ENVY around the Beltway. By the end of the day Mr Rolling Stone had done the circuit (circus?). No charisma, grim looking, simple and straightforward answers: Mr Rolling Stone gave off an air of cool detachment. Let the article speak for itself. By the time he appeared on Tweety he was ready for Mr Scepticism to go into his act: was real journalism committed? Anything left out? Rules of engagement? Tweety sounded like a cross examiner. Couldn’t believe that RS could do actual journalism. Even roped in Richard Engel, the Man to check the accuracy of the reporting.

The Village met Journalism and was shocked!
