Nancy Pelosi: Another Runner-Up

In the Person of the Year issue that was unveiled this morning, I have this profile of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi came in at #4 in the estimation of our editors. She is not only the highest ranking woman in the history of this country, standing second in line of succession to the presidency, but congressional scholars are beginning to agree that she has consolidated more power than any Speaker in the modern era. In the story, I look at how she made her way from stay-at-home mom to the Speaker’s chair, how she operates with a pragmatism that is at odds with her liberal image, and how she has wielded her power to push through every major item on the Obama agenda this year. It is a story that has often been obscured in all the attention that we have paid the maneuvering and drama in the Senate.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

Where did Sarah come in at? She did play a part in getting the republicans tossed out of power. She deserves some major credit for that public service.

Ooooh, so she’s been blinking “Make me person of the year, TIME” in morse code everytime she appears on camera. That makes sense.

  • spob

I’d say she’s pragmatic–a true liberal would be appalled at the abuse of power by people like Charlie Rangel et al. But a pragmatic person says, “Well, they’re on the team.”

  • sacredh

On the other hand, a true conservative would look at the abuse of power that went on during the last administration and say “That’s what we put you in there for”.

Yes, Nancy Pelosi is the most powerful woman to ever grace the halls of Congress. To that point she is also a bed-rock liberal progressive. She is also in my opinion one of the most dangerous persons to ever be elected as Speaker of the House. The danger is her purely socialist ideals that are lock-step in line with those of our socialist President, Barack Obama.
    .
We keep hearing about all the “leftists”, “rightist” and “centrists” in politics. While I do not condone the far right for some of their ideas and approaches, I strongly believe that people like Nancy Pelosi present more danger to our country than at any other time in our history.
    .
The danger is in power and control. Progressives like Nancy Pelosi will never be satisfied until they are able to control every aspect of our lives. The policies we are seeing today from the Obama Administration is proof of their agenda. Complete control, and elimination of individual liberty. Progressives will attempt to control all aspects of our lives if they are not stopped.
    .
Water resources are now being considered for further government regulation and control. Our health care is under attack as we speak, creating the largest government controlled aspect of 1/6th of the GDP of this country. The EPA will soon be let loose as well on carbon dioxide restrictions, which will not only cripple an already hurting economy, but further the control of government into our businesses.
    .
Yes Karen, Nancy Pelosi is a “runner-up”, but unlike McChrystal whose best interests are for the protection of our Nation through our military. Nancy is nothing short of Atilla the Hun in a pant-suit. She is vindictive, corrupt and lies every chance she gets to sway support for her socialist agenda of government control.

Pelosi #4 , Obama #2???? Could the Greek columns begin to be crumbling under the weight of their own arrogance and incompetence?

Seems that Time agrees that Bernacke headed off the crisis and not Obama

I’m as conservative as the day is long, and I despise corruption.
    .
In any event, I see my point is well-taken. KT, do you think that the inability to deal with obvious crooks like Rangel et alia is a problem?

  • rustyreturns

It ain’t over yet, freeinpa. I don’t hear the fat lady singing yet!

  • carotexas1

Karen, I read your article this early this morning and thought you did a great job.

I disagree with your editors in her placement. I think she should have been in the top two for what she has accomplished this year.

  • freeinpa

No but she may be warming up the pipes. If this Rube Goldberg HC plan gets passed and any more environmental Crap & Trade policies pass while people are unemployed sthe will be doing an aria.

    Is this sexism, hmmm :)

Pelosi is the best choice and should have been placed first and not have come in 4th position. Her being a woman should have made her achievements appear all the more stellar during the review process.

Well, no matter where she is placed, she is still first to me and others like me who admire her.

She is a seasoned politician and a good wife and mother.. –that is a Difficult order to pull off.

    Kudos to her.

    I wish her the best!

Rusty: Could commentators on the right possibly avoid using the word “socialist” when referring to liberal Democrats? Would that leave you rhetorically mute?
Now I found Bush and the neo-cons to be much more interested in controlling our lives. Warrantless wiretaps, intrusions into every aspect of our lives in the name of security, extreme secrecy (20 million or so lost e-mails, please), outing a CIA agent, demanding fealty to the religious right (no stem cell research, creationism, no condoms for Africa, etc), allowing the destruction of our economy, meddling with our federal prosecutors, and participation by our young men and women in an unjust war and condoning torture.
It was possible to think “facist” when contemplating the previous administration. I have avoided that epithet as non-productive.
Try not labeling and stereotyping Rusty. Your thought process might profit.

A 60:40 DEM advantage in Senate.
I wonder what Pelosi really thinks of Reid.

  • cfukara

Won’t it be just grand if Reid goes to work for a pharma or insurance company if he loses his re-election bid …

Of course such a move wouldn’t prove anything about his seemingly pharma/insurance-friendly shenanigans in 2009.

I’m as conservative as the day is long, and I despise corruption.
    .
…but spob, the days are getting shorter (aka global warming). By your own definition this means you’re becoming more liberal, correct? Or are you only conservative during the day and at night you’re a huge Pelosi fan? Given your own words, if you’re correct then one of these two must be right. Which is it?
