Nancy Pelosi: Another Runner-Up

In the Person of the Year issue that was unveiled this morning, I have this profile of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi came in at #4 in the estimation of our editors. She is not only the highest ranking woman in the history of this country, standing second in line of succession to the presidency, but congressional scholars are beginning to agree that she has consolidated more power than any Speaker in the modern era. In the story, I look at how she made her way from stay-at-home mom to the Speaker’s chair, how she operates with a pragmatism that is at odds with her liberal image, and how she has wielded her power to push through every major item on the Obama agenda this year. It is a story that has often been obscured in all the attention that we have paid the maneuvering and drama in the Senate.
