Happy Veterans’ Day

If you’re looking for a way to honor veterans today, you might consider telling a future veteran you appreciate his or her service via Let’s Say Thanks (funded by Xerox), which allows you to send a personal postcard to a member of the armed services stationed overseas. It’ll only cost you a little bit of time. If you have in mind something more substantial, today is the last day of Project Valour-IT’s annual fundraising competition. The program provides modified laptops to wounded soldiers — a sizable percentage of whom turn out to be burgeoning bloggers. For some reason the competition has been largely identified with right-wing blogs, but the project’s parent organization — Soldiers’ Angels — is a terrific, non-partisan group that allows civilians to “adopt” a soldier. My local diner — which attracts mostly crunchy, bleeding heart types from around NW DC — participates. It’s always heartened me to see Dem staffers and non-profit employees and others who might not necessarily agree with the administration’s military policy taking a moment to thank the one of the young people whose duty it is to follow through with it.

UPDATE: It looks like the donation buttons on the main Valour-IT page don’t work. You can donate directly here.

UPDATE: The notoriously prolific QUESTION HILLARY offers up another great organization to consider donating to: Fisher House, which provides support to wounded soldiers and their families.
