If you’ve read Newt Gingrich’s Rediscovering God in America–and you really should, to get a better understanding of why this thrice-married former Speaker is gaining ground among social conservatives–you know that he considers secularism one of the greatest threats facing the country. In fact, here’s the first sentence of the book:
There is no attack on American culture more destructive and more historically dishonest than the secular Left’s relentless effort to drive God out of America’s public square.
One secular scourge that conservatives like Gingrich decry this time of year is the replacement of “Christmas” with the generic “holiday,” whether in informal greetings or commercial communications. In fact, this year the American Family Association has called for a boycott of Walgreens because the drugstore chain distributed a circular using the word “holiday” 36 times and never mentioning Christmas. “At Walgreens, Christmas doesn’t exist!” reads the AFA boycott call. “Walgreens wants you to do your ‘Christmas’ shopping with them, while refusing to recognize that Christmas even exists.”
You may be able to guess where I’m going with this.Yes, Gingrich Productions–the candidate’s book and movie publicity arm–sent out the following email ad today offering one of Gingrich’s books for 50% off and calling the deal “Gingrich Productions’ Holiday Dash.” Awkward.
Why do the radical secularists over at Gingrich Productions refuse to recognize that Christmas even exists? Why are they being such Scrooges? When does the American Family Association boycott of Gingrich Productions begin? We eagerly await the answers to these pressing questions. In the meantime, you have just 30 minutes to nab an autographed copy of Newt’s historical novel To Try Men’s Souls. It’s the perfect secular holiday gift.
