President Barack Obama called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sunday in an effort to assuage concerns over the early morning nuclear deal with Iran.
Aboard Air Force One, Obama told Netanyahu that the P5+1 world powers are committed to finding a “lasting, peaceful, and comprehensive solution that would resolve the international community’s concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program,” according to a statement, but also that the U.S. “will remain firm in our commitment to Israel, which has good reason to be skeptical about Iran’s intentions.”
The president wants to immediately begin consultations with Israel to negotiate plans to stay in close contact over the next six months.
Netanyahu had earlier called the deal a “historic mistake.”
In the early hours of Sunday, P+51 struck a deal with Iran to halt its nuclear program for six months, while diplomats negotiate an agreement to prevent development of a nuclear weapon.
