A group of protesters, joined by Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, broke through barriers at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall on Sunday.
The protesters cut through links between metal barriers and carried part of the barricade to a rally outside the White House. There was at least one arrest, the Associated Press reports.
Cruz, also accompanied by Republican Senator Mike Lee, criticized President Barack Obama for closing the memorial, which has become a divisive symbol of the shutdown.
“Why is the federal government spending money to erect barricades to keep veterans out of this memorial?” Cruz proposed to the crowd.
