On July 1, 1972, Nixon signed Title IX of the Education Amendments, which prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal money — including sports. The 1996 Atlanta Games were considered the first “Title IX Olympics” because many of the participating female athletes were born after Title IX passed. But the 2012 London Games mark a Title IX milestone as well — for the first time at the Olympics, there are more women competing than men.
