About Those AIG Bonuses

The White House should be sending New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo a big bouquet of flowers this morning, in thanks for how much he has done to make this political problem go away. It turns out that shame still works. But that raises a question: Given this President’s powers of communication, why didn’t the Administration realize from the outset that old-fashioned jawboning might have been the best answer? (Obama belatedly made his own lack of enthusiasm for the legislation clear in his interview with “60 Minutes,” when he noted pointedly that “we can’t govern out of anger.”)

With signs all over the place that Congress is putting the brakes on the legislation that it was in such a hurry to pass last week, I’m told that Obama plans to put a little Cuomo-like pressure of his own on these bonus babies at tonight’s news conference.
