Jay Newton-Small

Jay Newton-Small is Washington correspondent for TIME. Born in New York, she spent time growing up in Asia, Australia and Europe following her vagabond United Nations parents. A graduate of Tufts University and Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, Jay previously covered politics for Bloomberg News. And, yes, despite the misleading name SHE is a she.

Evangelicals for Obama?

If this Barna poll of Evangelicals* is right, McCain has a LOT of work to do. From the poll’s synopsis:

1. Among likely voters, Sen. Obama holds a 50% to 35% lead over Sen. McCain.
2. There are relatively few undecided voters – just 15% of the registered voters who are likely to vote have not yet chosen a candidate to support. For Sen.

The Heat in Washington

It’s an unseasonably hot June in Washington — today could go over 100 degrees the weatherman says. The heat wave is probably not directly linked to global warming but in case anyone was wondering about what happened to the Lieberman/Warner bill I posted about last week, my colleague Eric Pooley has this great wrap up on the bill’s …

Hillary’s Concession Speech

Hillary gave one of the best speeches I’ve seen her give today. My story on the speech for your weekend enjoyment.

Also, response from Obama, who went golfing this morning (who knew he golfed?):

“Obviously, I am thrilled and honored to have Senator Clinton’s support. But more than that, I honor her today for the valiant and historic

Clinton NOT Seeking VP Slot

This just out from the Clinton campaign:

Response to VP Inquiries
While Senator Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever she can to elect a Democrat to the White House, she is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her.  The choice here is Senator Obama’s and his alone.

To Concede or Not to Concede

There was some confusion this afternoon over what to expect from Senator Clinton tonight. The AP reported that Clinton would concede citing unnamed Clinton senior staffers:

“Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively

3 Before Breakfast

Here we go. Today is the last day of the Democratic primaries and Obama has already raked in threee superdelegates before breakfast including the powerful Jim Clyburn, Majority Whip and the top African American in the House. Clyburn announced his endorsement on the Today Show this morning, saying: “Today the primary process draws to a …

Lieberman – Warner Bill on Global Warning

Perhaps the most underplayed story of the day is the Lieberman-Warner bill being considered on the Senate floor this week. This is the first big piece of global warming legislation the Senate has weighed since Lieberman’s last version of this, co-authored with John McCain (thus earning the staff nickname McLieberman), went down in …

Obama Leaves His Church

Yesterday, just as the RBC committee was coming back into session a ripple of surprise ripped through the crowd as the news spread that Obama had left Trinity church on Chicago’s Southside after more than 20 years of worship there. The move comes after months of controversial Jeremiah Wright footage and appearances and a week after a …

Inside Today’s RBC Meeting

Having run the gauntlet of protesters this morning (mostly HRC folks bussed in from a dozen states), I’ve been sitting in the RBC meeting all day. They’re just wrapping up the Michigan arguments before breaking for a much-delayed lunch. The committee is expected to make a decision after lunch but the buzz around the room is they will …

Hillary’s Excuse to Fight On?

Hillary’s lawyers today outlined her wish list to the RBC in an open letter to committee members attached after the jump. She again takes a hard line the she wants all delegates seated with 100% of the votes and apportioned the way the states voted in January, even as the Clinton camp braced for defections amongst her 13 supporters on …
