Former President Bill Clinton told Kentucky voters Tuesday that defeating Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would make “a big difference.” Clinton’s comments came at a fundraiser for his likely Democratic opponent, Alison Lundergan Grimes.
The Louisville fundraiser was the former president’s first campaign trail appearance this year, NBC News reports. Supporters paid between $100 and $5,200 a pop to see the candidate and former president take the stage together.
“For the last 30 years, as often as not, [the Republican] strategy has worked mostly because our people see it, get discouraged, and stay home, believe that it doesn’t make a difference,” Clinton said. “And I am here to tell you — I know, it was my life — it makes a big difference who wins this election and Alison Lundergan Grimes should win it and will with your help.”
Grimes, Kentucky’s Democratic Secretary of State, will face McConnell in November if the Republican senator defeats his primary opponent.
Kentucky voted for Clinton in the 1992 and 1996 presidential elections.
