Democratic Governors Back Obama On Minimum Wage, Blast Republicans

Wage hike would benefit for women in particular, Dems say

The nation’s Democratic governors expressed support Friday for President Barack Obama’s efforts to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, while criticizing the GOP’s focus on social issues.

Speaking outside the West Wing after a morning of meetings with Obama and White House officials, the governors expressed the need for raising the minimum wage at the federal level, characterizing it as a benefit for women in particular.

“The overwhelming majority of Americans think that raising the minimum wage is a good idea,” Obama said before he met with the governors in the State Dining Room. “That is true for independents; that is true for Democrats; and it’s true for Republicans.”

Separately, Vice President Joe Biden dropped in on a meeting with administration officials and four Democratic governors working to raise their states’ minimum wages. Democrats, hoping to unseat Republican incumbents in states that voted for Obama in 2012, are betting that the focus-group-tested “Opportunity for All” message will carry their candidates across the finish line in November.

“We don’t know whether it’s a winning argument,” said Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association. “We know it’s the right thing to do.”

On Thursday, at a gathering of Democratic donors to the DGA, Obama bemoaned lack of focus on state races, as his White House refocuses to help Democratic candidates in this year’s midterm elections. “We know how to win national elections, but all too often, it’s during these midterms where we end up getting ourselves into trouble, because I guess we don’t think it’s sexy enough,” Obama said. “But the fact of the matter is, is that that’s where so much of the action is.”

After the White House meeting, Shumlin criticized Republicans for focusing on social issues instead of creating opportunity. “Republican governors have been distracted by a more radical social agenda that gives tax cuts to the wealthy, asks the middle class to pay for them, while they cut education and the opportunities that will allow us to grow jobs in this great nation,” he said. “While they do that, they seem more focused on passing polices that alienate women, minorities, immigrants, gays, and other Americans.”

Republicans want to change the minimum wage alright.  They want the minimum to be 2 dollars an hour.  Republicans hate the American people.

Beneficial to women ? What about the men ? Second class citizen much ? As long as it proves that there is a war against women it is OK ?

Low wages means low incomes for businesses in the area and low attendance at professional sports venues. Take St. Petersburg Florida as an example. It has one of the consistently best baseball teams in the US and it has the lowest attendance in the league. The NFL Bucs are no better in attendance. Businesses in the area come and go for financial reasons.

The GOP has a major problem with raising the minimum wage.  If someone who's making, say, $7.50 an hour, suddenly gets a raise to, oh, $8.25 an hour, just think how much money that would mean taken from the pockets of the millionaire company executives or (more likely) billionaire stockholders.  Why, they might lost a few dollars in payments, just so some parasite can make ends meet.

What is this world coming to when the leaches of this world are supposed to be able to afford to live at the expense of people with 4 houses, 15 cars and offshore bank accounts in Switzerland and the Caymans?

The whole place is going to hell.

I wonder what the GOP will do if their favorite retailer, Walmart, comes out in favor of raising the minimum wage?

Giving these folks $3 to 4 an hour more will take many of them off foof stamps and Medicaid. How about  it Righties, lets have Walmart do the right thing so their empolyees are no longer a drag on us taxpayers.

@roknsteve  Did they say that ? What is wrong with you people ? You think making up stories is part of an intelligent discussion ?

ReneDemonteverde

@tkulaga  Nope. Should be applicable only to big businesses earning big profits. Like Chevron which still pays their employees seven to eight dollars an hour despite humongous profits. Not small businesses like shops and restaurants. Customers dont go to restaurants asking for the waiter`s salary, dont go to shops asking for the cashiers salary before buying or ordering. They sit down and order, they choose items and pay. You are using a fallacious argument that is modus operandi for liberals. Dont muddle the central issue which is some businesses can afford some cannot. Period. {apologies to Dear Leader}

@DavidStrayer  If a small restaurant or shop barely eking out its existence would you still insist on that stupid argument ? No quarrel with big corporations which could afford even double that. Use your common sense please, it seems to be in short supply among you libbies.

@tommyudo  so how did you establish that walmart is the gop's favorite retailer tommydoodoo? Do liberals shop there?

@tommyudo  No problem with that, Udo. No problem with that. Just with small businesses barely squeaking by in these troubled times imposed by your Dear Leader.

LOL. What nonsense!

Walmart doesn't need the government to tell it how much to pay people.

This is the problem with liberals. They think the government is the answer to every problem.

If Walmart thinks people should be paid more, they can and do pay them more all by themselves. They don't need the government to tell them.

I'm going to guess that you've never run a business or managed a business operation before in your life.

The fact is that people are paid what they are worth. If you want to earn more, invest in yourself. Make yourself worth more to an employer. because I can tell you for certain, there are a lot of low skill/low performance workers out there who simple are not worth $10.10 per hour. Those people will be shut out of the job market.

Is that really the best you can do?  When you can't counter an argument, try to insult the person?

For all the venom GOP apologists have directed my way over time, it's fair to say that a large percentage is targeted at me personally by people who don't know me.  How can you consider your response or those of the others (above) as being even remotely appropriate?

If your response, or those of the others above are indicative of the skills of the Republicans' advocates, the Democrats shouldn't have any trouble whatsoever.

@ReneDemonteverde @DavidStrayer  Wait....so a "big business" can afford to pay its workforce a virtually unlimited amount of money, even though most big businesses have a significantly larger workforce than a corresponding "small" business? Employee costs tend to run consistent regardless of the size of the business, therefore a minimum wage hike is going to have a similar affect on a business with 3,000 employees as it does to one with 5.

@ReneDemonteverde @tommyudo Ridiculous argument. Stop blaming Obama for problems encountered by locally owned businesses controlled by local and state governments. Speak only of which you have facts.

No liberals think people should get paid enough so the rest don't have to pitch in. Why do you want to subsidize Walmart with your taxes?

Sounds dumb

@MaxWright1

As a matter of fact, I'm self-employed, but that is neither here nor there, so STFU.

According to the latest news, Walmart is considering whether to go the route of the GAP. Their sales have been down. I guess all those low wage people are flocking to those dollar stores.  Last  Xmas they had a food drive for their employees! Just a big cosmic joke. The govt. isn't telling them to do anything. Why even sully myself responding to a TP moron.

mantisdragon91

@MaxWright1 @tommyudoYep instead Walmart can count on us subsidizing their full time employees with health care and Snap benefits, and with putting out food collection boxes for their employee at Christmas. Supporting welfare for corporations seems to be the only kind of safety net conservatives like you believe in.

@tkulaga @ReneDemonteverde  I don't think you've been there and done much of anything in your whole life tk. Too stupid to find your own front door.

manlyman

@tkulaga @ReneDemonteverde  everybody should make a living wage, even those who don't have a job. Raising the minimum wage will give people more money, which they will spend, which will grow the ecnomy. Why not just send everyone (except the evil rich) a nice big fat check, and boom the economy will explode!

@ReneDemonteverde C'mon. One in a million grow into big business. Name me three Obama rules and regulations that hurt small mom and pops. Mom and Pops struggle with local government inspections taxes and fees. They beat federal government taxes. Been there, done that.

@mantisdragon91 @MaxWright1 @tommyudo  well you can make walmart pay their employees more money, but can you forbid them to raise their prices? Can you stop them from replacing their cashiers with self check-out machines? You know the answers to all this mantis, that's what's so despicable about you. Liberals lack any semblance of integrity or decency.
