Edward Snowden, whose leaks of government secrets have sparked an ongoing public debate about state surveillance in the U.S., delivered an address to the Oxford Union Wednesday congratulating Chelsea Manning on winning the Sam Adams Award for Integrity and Intelligence.

Chelsea Manning is the former U.S. Army private currently serving a 35-year prison sentence in the military prison at Fort Leavenworth for turning nearly a million classified government records over to WikiLeaks in what may have been the largest disclosure of state secrets in American history.

“I’m going to comment general on an issue that she raised to public prominence, that’s very important but less well acknowledged,” said Snowden, himself a former recipient of the award. “That issue is over-classification.”

Snowden used the occasion to warn of what he described as a government growing so secretive as to imperil American democracy.

“In the last year the White House told us that 95 million records have been created classified and withheld from the public in the year 2012. That’s more than any other year on record and shows a trend where the government is withholding more secrets than ever,” he said. Snowden called for people to push governments around the world toward greater openness.

“It’s this self correcting, self determining form of unapologetically American government in which Chelsea Manning so valuably participated,” he said.

Whistleblowers are heros. Snowden is no whistleblower, he is just a pawn.

A hero would have stood his charges knowing that the United states govt would come at him with everything they had, and he would prevail because he did everything the right way, like Thomas Drake did.

Snowden STOLE information for months and sent it overseas to someone who never did publish the majority of the information he was sending.Snowden went on to steal 4 laptops full of data that contained details about how America gathers intel on foreign powers, and trips to both the countries the US does most of its spying on.Coincidence?

The governments of China and Russia, don't have free speech, and neither does the UK, as we saw that whatever greewald had; was subsequently confiscated. In fact; any reporting that was done on the leaked data had to be done in the united states, because we have freedom of speech. Which should make you ask the following questions;

1,Why didn't Snowden leak the information here?

2. Why would Snowden bring the information 2 two countries with state controlled media, that don't really give a rats ass about Americans civil liberties.

3. Why wouldnt he face the charges he was facing; like a hero would?

4. Why would he bring data gathered about Americans to a foreign country; in order to supposedly protect those Americans?

4a. Why would those foreign powers ; protect the information gathered on Americans?

5. Why would Snowden leak information to two regimes that have state controlled media; with no free spech; whose regimes would never admit they were spying on their own ciizens; and you'd never hear about it because the media is STATE CONTROLLED!

I wouldn't call "him" a "she", especially when NOBODY has had access to Bradley except his attorney, and we don't know for sure he's telling the truth, since our politicians & the Media have such a thing about sodomy.  What if it's ENTIRELY FALSE, and here we've been calling him a "she" and changing his name.  I mean, come on!  It would be different if Bradley had made this kind of odd confession PRIOR to him being jailed---------BUT HE DIDN'T.

So, I think the MEDIA should NOT be spouting such stuff without proof.  There is NO proof out of his mouth---only questionable quotes.  And, as we know that the Media is full of lies, and we know they want to obfuscate the truth about many topics, I think it's fair to say why should we believe anything reported.  When a government like ours and the Rich Elites have such a homosexual agenda & the mere fact it's been on the FRONT PAGE of Yahoo with the NFL & the Olympics for the past two weeks---come on---it's not so big a stretch they would lie about this.

You are serving in the Military . Mr Snowden gives information that gets you killed . Hero or villain ?

Snowden is a Bambi-eyed, deluded idealist cum megalomaniac. He wanted to join the US Army so he could fight in Iraq to make the world free from oppression. He didn't reveal anything to anyone. George Bush informed the American people and the rest of the world of those programs in his 5th state of the union address. So all the intelligence agencies in every country already knew what we were doing, when Snowden was but a young lad. All those Snowden lovers who whine on the internet deconstruct their own arguments. How can they say they are serious about surveillance when they blatantly give away their positions to the universe? Like Snowden, they just like to whine.

@JohnSmith50

Manning has been known to be gay. He was caught because he was sending sensitive information to a gay admirer who turned out to be an fbi informant. Chelsea Manning: bringing a new meaning to the term; whistle blower. ;)

@bojimbo26 Depends. Did I take an Oath to uphold the Constitution? Was I fighting to uphold the Constitution in fulfillment of my obligation to uphold that Oath? If so... hero. Am I a serving in the military as top brass of the NSA, involved in an attempted usurpation of power of the American population, over-stepping my bounds, violating my Oath to defend the Constitution against enemies (foreign and domestic), lying to Congress to cover up such programs, threatening average, every-day citizens with fines or imprisonment for speaking out against these programs and have major fears that if these programs are found out I will be seen for the scumbag that I am for committing treasonous acts (spying) on the people of my own country and treasonous acts (aiding our enemies whose entire strategy is to reduce our liberties and create a sense of terror and futility on citizens)? I suppose that I would see him as a villain as I await execution by Congressional mandate or by other military men who chose to keep their Oath.

@coyote1 Let me see if I follow? The government currently wants Snowden, saying he revealed 'things'. According to you, shill, Snowden didn't reveal anything. Who is deconstructing arguments?

ClimbnPrana
ClimbnPrana

@coyote1 Bush did not inform us of the data mining and storage on US citizens and it's friends. What Snowden is revealing that the NSA is doing has nothing to do with national security. And the information that CONTINUES to flow points to corruption. You're deconstructing your own attempt to downplay these revelations by name calling - trying to make Snowden out to be naïve, and calling those who find something troubling with the documents "Snowden lovers". And you're whining on the other side of the fence, btw.

@jmcelroy888 I would say his roots are firmly planted in American soil. He endangered himself to reveal the truth to all of us. That's patriotic as hell man, have you been brainwashed that bad that you cant see that? He is everything America was based on!

ReneDemonteverde
ReneDemonteverde

@bojimbo26  Ha ha ha. In a way you are right. But I am referring future tense. More military people on our side will be killed as the enemies emboldened by the revelations will be more aggressive. Ergo, Snowden is a hero to the Russians, Chinese, Muslim terrorists Iranians and North Koreans as well.

@jmac @DanGivens @bojimbo26  What are you now Jmac ? A Constitutional expert ?  Do not be like your role model. Where in the Constitution does it say you cannot eavesdrop on possible spies right here in your country using electronic devices specifically ? Where ? Hello, you still in there ?

jmac

@DanGivens @bojimbo26  That would be ONE federal judge who mentioned the Larry Klayman case.  Hello!  That's not going to fly - even with a conservative Supreme Court.   There are a trove of federal judges that disagree with that one judge.  Left and right.

DanGivens

@bojimbo26

A federal judge ruled that the NSA's actions were likely unconstitutional. An independent debate sponsored by NPR also found in favor of Snowden. So...hero!

@jmac @serinanth@jmcelroy888When you realize that we are all one species living on a fragile tiny oasis in a vast hostile universe. We need to stop with this childish political nonsense. The people of the world need to unite, whether their governments like it or not.
