Study: Liberals Booze More Than Conservatives

Left-leaning states apparently enjoy hard liquor more than red states

If the Democrats want to change their slogan from “the party of inclusion” to “the party of cocktails!”, there’s research that will back them up. A new study from the Journal of Wine Economics shows that states that lean left tend to consume more spirits and beer than states with a more conservative bent.

Two economists from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh reviewed data from 1952 to 2010, comparing relative shipments of alcohol that arrived in each state with “citizen ideologies,” determined by factors such as vote results for congressional races. “Holding everything else constant, our findings suggest that when a state becomes more liberal politically, its population consumes more beer and spirits per capita,” the authors write. New Hampshire residents, for instance, swill far more hard liquor per capita than Americans making their homes in Utah and Arkansas.

So why would liberal inclinations be correlated with ordering another round? The authors review studies that suggest various explanations. Conservatives, for example, tend to be more religious than liberals, and religion has been linked with “healthier lifestyles by discouraging alcohol and tobacco consumption while encouraging exercise and personal hygiene.” But this isn’t necessarily all bad news for the Left: The authors quote a study that found intelligent children are likely to consume more alcohol than their less intelligent peers in adulthood.

The authors also present a moral hazard theory. “People may behave irresponsibly when they do not fully bear the cost of their behavior,” the authors write, and liberals “tend to advocate for a stronger role for government in health care and social welfare.” But more research is needed, they say, to determine a causal relationship between political ideology and pounding beers.

A fun post, Katy, that doesn't do much other than call liberals a bunch of drunks without really proving why.

If I were to posit a cause in jest, it's that people who are more open-minded are less inhibited when it comes to some things that make life enjoyable; sex, good whiskey, or a mellow j.

> Conservatives, for example, tend to be more religious than liberals, and religion has been linked...

See, to me, conservatives tend to be no-fun-sticks-up-the-arse types with authoritarian leanings. Religion is incidental.

> “People may behave irresponsibly when they do not fully bear the cost of their behavior..."

Is having a drink considered irresponsible? How do we measure irresponsibility? I know...how about DUI fatalities?

We'll take a generally liberal state of New York and the generally conservative state of Idaho. The percent of total driving fatalities involving alcohol-impaired drivers in NY is 26.9% while Idaho is actually higher at 29.9%. Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities per 100K population is 1.6 in NY and double that (3.2) in Idaho. Similar results if you substitute California for New York or Oklahoma or Texas for Idaho.

Please don't tell me that Texas has a 'high level of patronage that fosters state dependency' or can be considered liberal.

>  ...liberals “tend to advocate for a stronger role for government in health care and social welfare.”

True, but off the mark. Liberals tend to live in more urban areas that have public transportation, alcohol awareness programs, etc...things that liberals advocate for that allow for more responsible alcohol consumption.

Scene: An editors meeting at TIME.

Journalist: I wonder if Democrats skew younger and younger people drink more?

The editor: Naaaaah! Correlation is causation! We're journalists, not scientists! Besides, just think about the link bait headline we could write to go with it!

CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION!

Any scientist or researcher worth their salt would not imply that it does.

I'm curious how they arrived at these results. If they just found "well, liberal states order more booze", I would say "Duh, that where all the people live"

I find this data to be false. I know just as many conservatives that drink that equal to the amount of liberals. I think it has to do with where you live in terms of socially accepting. Religion plays no factor either. I know many religious people that drink as well. They however tend to drink more up here in the northeast. I think it also plays into college experiences and the 20's too for most people. I find Christians to actually drink more than any other religion. I don't know why, but I think in the northeast it has to do with the "county" influences of the lifestyle for being "redneck" as some of my friends call it. Sooo many songs about beer, whisky, partying, and good music.

It's all the conservatives living in the liberal states that need to drink twice as much. I find it hard to believe that the Southern states don't drink more whiskey, bourbon, and beer than the coasts and north east drink Appletinis and mimosas

We never consume alcohol in Louisiana. :-)

Why not ? It only confirms what everybody knows. Liberals are escapists. They live in their own dream world, detach from reality. That is why facts, truths and liberalism are alien to each other. Liberals are more prone to lie. To cheat. Ask Obama.

Liberals know how to party and feel good without screwing other people over. No surprise.

Well, that's easy.  The conservative states have more stills so the consumption is off-the-books, especially since they have to hide it from the revenuers.  Most of them don't know Prohibition was repealed.  Heck, they'll find out they can legally smoke pot around the time Honey Boo Boo qualifies for Medicaid.

Thanks, Katy. I question if a teavangelical culture promotes healthier lifestyles from the religious viewpoint, just by watching who frequents fast food joints, cheap buffets, and so forth. Go to any Golden Corral or Cici's and poll the patrons to see who are liberal and who are conservative. The religious limits on drinking, though, sure do apply.

In MY case, having grown up in a conservative family and now am more liberal though the years, I'm drinking more. And loving it. Now if we can get cat cafes to open up throughout the US, it'd be fun to learn who would visit them more - liberals or conservatives. That's a topic YOU would know more about than the rest of us commenters, Katy.

@ReneDemonteverde You are an idiot.  Based on your moronic response to the article I could say that conservatives will drink without question when someone else brings them the glass.

Everyone on here is trying to make sense out of a few facts that have nothing to do with each other.

Say it with me everyone, "Correlation does not equal causation."  So while liberal election victories may correlate with increased alcohol consumption no (professional, ethical) scientist would ever imply that the correlation infers causation.

Ok now let me play the game with the idiots.

I bet people drank more often after liberal election victories because...
They felt secure enough in the governmental leadership to let loose more often.
The increase in drinking was actually related to the self hatred of conservatives after they failed to buy house and senate seats.
The elections were finally over, time to celebrate.
Their neighbors wouldn't stfu about how they are trying to take our guns.
The people had a few more bucks in their pockets.

Or why don't we turn the game around.
People started drinking less after conservative election victories because...
They needed to be sober so they wouldn't make the same voting mistake next time.
They were scared for the future of they country and government and therefore pinched pennies, just in case.
Their neighbors would stfu about how they were trying to take their guns away.

See what I mean people.  Correlation does not equal causation.
