Update: Jan. 29, 11:24am

Rep. Michael Grimm (R—N.Y.) physically threatened a local news reporter during a heated exchange following an interview after Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, telling the reporter, “I’ll throw you off this f—–g balcony.”

The exchange between the Republican Congressman from Staten Island and New York 1 reporter Michael Scotto took place on the Capitol balcony following the President’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Scotto attempted to ask the lawmaker about an ongoing investigation into his campaign finances when Grimm stopped him: “I’m not talking about anything that’s off-topic, this is only about the president,” he said, before walking away from the camera.

As Scotto began to explain to TV viewers that the Congressman did not want to answer questions about the investigation, Grimm stormed back over to Scotto, kicking off an angry exchange as the camera kept rolling:

According to New York 1‘s transcript of the exchange, Grimm told Scotto, “Let me be clear to you, you ever do that to me again I’ll throw you off this f—–g balcony.” When Scotto defended his line of questioning, Grimm told him, “No, no, you’re not man enough, you’re not man enough. I’ll break you in half. Like a boy.”

Congressman Grimm later released a statement about the exchange saying, “I was extremely annoyed because I was doing NY1 a favor by rushing to do their interview first in lieu of several other requests. The reporter knew that I was in a hurry and was only there to comment on the State of the Union, but insisted on taking a disrespectful and cheap shot at the end of the interview, because I did not have time to speak off-topic. I verbally took the reporter to task and told him off, because I expect a certain level of professionalism and respect, especially when I go out of my way to do that reporter a favor. I doubt that I am the first Member of Congress to tell off a reporter, and I am sure I won’t be the last.”

NY1, the New York City-based 24-hour cable news channel, took a markedly harder line toward Grimm’s threat. “It is extremely disturbing when anyone threatens one of our reporters – let alone a U.S. Congressman,” the station’s political director Bob Hardt said in a statement. “The NY1 family is certainly alarmed and disappointed by the behavior of Representative Grimm and demands a full apology from him. This behavior is unacceptable.”

The House Ethics Committee said in November that Grimm is being investigated for possible campaign violations. Grimm, a former FBI agent, has denied any wrongdoing.

Update: Scotto tweeted on Tuesday morning that Grimm had called him to apologize.

I have to wonder here if Grimm isn't the dumbest of the dumb when it comes to talking/threatening a reporter who is still talking into a live camera feed when he, Grimm, comes back into the shot and starts threatening the reporter.  You can see at one point that he looks back into the camera and then kind of moves the reporter and himself out of the shot off to the left.  What?  Did he not realize that the microphone was also still live and recording his every utterance?  He should be charged, simple as that.

Why isn't that thug under arrest?

1. It is a crime to threaten someone's life.

2. It is a crime to break what few campaign financing rules are left.

3. It is a crime to prostitute a political position.

It should be taken as evidence of guilt in crimes 2 & 3, that the thug committed crime 1 in an effort to brutally discourage scrutiny of crimes 2 & 3.

How shamelessly corrupt are the so called 'police'?

Anyone (even a cop) can see irrefutable evidence of the fact that he uttered a death threat.

There is no excuse for the fact that he has not been charged with uttering a death threat.

What does it take to arrest a dirt bag criminal, when that dirt bag criminal is a rich white republican?

1) charges should be filed

2) this congressman is now officially in a race to the bottom with Gov Bigmouth; unfortunately there seem to be a unlimited amount of neanderthals that the right wing will put up in his place

So this is the type of people the Tea Party puts in office. Cue the shocked face.

50 million viewers witnessed a congressman threaten a man with great bodily harm less than murder on tv and he isn't charged.(10 yr felony) In most domestic disputes someone goes to jail rather the wife wants to charge or not.The officers see the evidence and the crime is against society as a whole so the person is arrested. It is not up to the victim, he is apparently threatened. Whoever did not charge and arrest this congressman for his actions is guilty of not doing their job and locking away dangerous acting threatening people. He needs to lose his job and be probed well for possible accepting bribes. If I had made this threat I would be in jail. This guy is trained in Marshall arts and self defense which he will be glad to say HE is a weapon. So, by his own admission, he was armed when he threatened that kids life for doing his job.

The verbal threat to due physical harm, coupled with the present ability to enact that threat, it is the very definition of assault.  This pig is a bully and a megalomaniac.  I say press full criminal charges for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Wow, I didn't even know about this investigation until he spouted off!  Way to go Rep. Grimm.  I'll be following it to it's bitter end now and posting it on Facebook to my 600 friends!

Nothing can be worse than Obamacare, IRS bullying of Obama, Obama's lies, and 4 dead men that he lied about, what a shame blaming all that on a damn video.  He needs to be impeached, period.

This congressman is aware that "The Sopranos" is just a TV show, right?

Not the first to tell of a reporter, although threatening to murder them does seem a step further, but keep it up and it may be the last thing you do as a free man.

Busy time for Republicans. We have Chris Christie and his mess, then Huckabee's dumb comments this week, Rand Paul's equally dumb comments,  Bob McDonnell's scandal, Tim Huelskamp on Rachael Maddow sounding like he was insane and now Mike Grimm.

Grimm had no time to answer this reporters question but had time to back him up to the railing, tell him he'll break him in half and throw him over the balcony and run his mouth for 15 seconds.  He could have answered the question faster!   HE demands professionalism yet he has none himself!

Can you imagine if a Democrat did this to a FOX reporter?

It would be PROOF that FOX was getting too close to THE TRUTH™ about Benghazi

No matter what, it is never right for a Member of the House of Representatives to physically threaten another person, regardless of who they are.  Even if the journalist was wrong in straying from approved questions, it does not merit the level of threat heaped upon him.  If this is how the Congressman reacts to a question he did not like, imagine what he would do to a voter who disagreed with him about how they were being represented.

I do find a little poetic justice in the fact that Grimm has been one of the few politicians to go to the matt for Chris Christie, siteing Christie's integrity and leadership.  If these are supposed to be our leaders and this is what they consider 'integrity', then we need to seriously examine alternatives come November!

Congressman Grimm is a New Yorker - He is connected to something - You have to be connected to something to become a congressman in New York - Everyone knows this - He knows this - His temper tantrum indicates that he is under enormous pressure somewhere within that 'connection'. If the press does not follow the "rules of decorum" as dictated by the "decorum Gods in the sky" then those who see the fabric of their reality unraveling, BLOW! Being a New Yorker, he blew New York style. With a name like Grimm - who's surprised? Damn pushy KIDS anyway!!! He surrounded by killers - be very careful.

The so called reporter was clearly in the wrong.  The topic was Baracky's SOTU, which Grimm had every right to limit questions in this setting.  The reporter instead ended the segment not with what was talked about but with what wasn't talked about.  Grimm lost his cool, as anyone would under the same circumstances.

We don't have journalists anymore.  We have jeernalists.

Oh I see, from wikipedia that you are asking us to commit intellectual property theft instead of making a link to the content that is on your server.  Why would you prefer that we copy stuff to our own sever, thus committing intellectual property theft, rather than giving you access to the knowledge of who was reading your material?

@BaileeBarnes The funny thing is that you don't even believe all of this. "Nothing is worse than Obamacare".  You know that there are 0 facts to support that statement.  You may not like it, but to say there is nothing worse worse is laughable.  And the video that you're talking about sparked intense protests all over the muslim world and was definitely a factor (amongst others) in the attack.  What facts do you have to back up your statements?  I can tell by your picture that you're obviously an unbiased open minded individual, so please, share some of the extensive research that you've done to come to these conclusions... and you can't copy/paste from DRUDGE.  Otherwise, just admit that you're trolling.

@LutherBrix If you threw a FOX reporter off the balcony, you might have to be decontaminated afterward. They come with their own form of protection.

@waynochris Once you are a politician you are fair game, and you should be above it all, and if nothing else keep your cool.  How many strikes you want to give this guy before you call him out?  Just imagine if he actually had an important job in government.  He'd have been perfect at the Cuban missile crisis.  We wouldn't be here anymore with hair trigger like that.  Fortunately, he was stupid enough for it to be on tape and his career is over.  Ask Weiner how big mistakes go.

g.a.peterson1958
g.a.peterson1958

@waynochris Grimm is a public servant not an appointed dictator, anytime life in the public eye gets a bit much for him he is welcome to resign, I for one am really tired of this countries elected officials and our law enforcement officials behaving like they are so far above the common man....remove this idiot from office immediately and then charge and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law...

stndspec
stndspec

@waynochris Fine, let's run with that hypothetical. The reporter bullied the congressman because he didn't respect the congressman's clearly stated request on camera that questions be limited to SOTU topics. To be clear, the reporter is being rude at worst, this is not a prosecutable sort of bullying.

The congressman threatens the reporter's life in response. He does this after he thinks the cameras are safely down. The congressman commited an arrestable crime, and it is documented. He should be arrested now with this evidence, then forced to step down. Lack of the most basic form of self discipline is the worst quality imaginable for someone with such power over so many lives, and breaking the law requires consequences.

Any conservative or liberal wanna disagree on any of these points? Serious crimes don't apply to congressmen, and criminal behavior is not an impeachable offense? You can say the reporter was rude all you want, and insult his integrity. It's fine you see the other side of the coin, empathy is a valuable tool and is ultimately the key to resolving differences. But if your take-away from watching this video prioritizes rude behavior over that of criminal, then in the most black and whitely measurable letter of the law you have very obviously mis-weighed the issues and should take it as a sign to double check your logic train. For your own sake.

SamuelClemens

@waynochris And explains and excuses everything. Can I throw you off the roof for trolling? Just asking.

RyanHelms
RyanHelms

@waynochris You're right, that reporter was hounding him.  Did you see how he followed Grimm when he wouldn't answer the question and walked away, shoving the mic in his face. Besides, the media is only supposed to ask about things that politicians want to answer.  Grimm is a private citizen who didn't volunteer for public scrutiny and his campaign finances are no one else's business but his.  Typical Liberal witch hunt!

@RyanHelms@waynochrisWell said Mr Helms. It's extraordinary to me that any human being would be defending this guys actions. A US Congressman threatens to throw a reporter off of a balcony and to break him in half and there are people on here blaming the reporter! It is a CRIME to threaten someone with physical harm. It's a reporters job to ask him questions about his alleged campaign finance violations. None of this has anything to do with party affiliation. Yeesh

RyanHelms
RyanHelms

@BaileeBarnes @RyanHelms Thanks for all of those demonstrable facts and statistics.  One I didn't say whether or not I like Obamacare.  I think it has a lot of problems but what we had before was measurably worse.  Two, I don't 'believe' in a video... it exists.  Being able to see something that is happening like protestors with the name of the director on their signs, burning American flags in vitriolic protest, doesn't take active belief, just read a newspaper.  Was it all about the video? of course not, but it did play a part.  Also, if you think I need help, please point me in the right direction.  Tell me where I can go to get the best information, so that I may be set on the right path.  I am being serious here.  I make decisions based on facts and not whether I like the source.  I change my mind all the time, when new information becomes available.  Thank you in advance.

Finally, thank you for letting me know what the President sounds like when he laughs... So it's 2 HAs, 2LOLs (does he actually say LOL?), 2 HEs and then a final LOL.  I hope I got that right.  I got nervous when you told me the president was laughing at me.  I didn't know that the NSA had cameras in my room.  Cheers friend:)
