White House Defends Joe Biden From Gates Criticism

"President Obama relies on his good counsel every day,” says a spokesperson

The White House moved swiftly Tuesday to defend Vice President Joe Biden from criticism by former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in his forthcoming memoir, which questions his judgment on foreign policy.

“I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades,” Gates writes in the book, Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War, due on sale next week.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, National Security Council spokesperson Caitlin Hayden responded to the charge.

“The President disagrees with Secretary Gates’ assessment — from his leadership on the Balkans in the Senate, to his efforts to end the war in Iraq, Joe Biden has been one of the leading statesmen of his time, and has helped advance America’s leadership in the world,” Hayden said. “President Obama relies on his good counsel every day.”

Hayden said the President deeply appreciated Gates’ service as Secretary of Defense, but acknowledges that his staff often have conflicting opinions. Gates was the only high-level holdover from the Bush Administration who served under Obama.

“Deliberations over our policy on Afghanistan have been widely reported on over the years,” Hayden said, “and it is well known that the President has been committed to achieving the mission of disrupting, dismantling and defeating al Qaeda, while also ensuring that we have a clear plan for winding down the war, which will end this year. As has always been the case, the President welcomes differences of view among his national security team, which broaden his options and enhance our policies. The President wishes Secretary Gates well as he recovers from his recent injury, and discusses his book.”

Biden does the work of three men, Larry, Curly and Moe!

Gates' opinion of VP Biden is totally unfounded and out of line. His record as Senators and VP clearly refute Gates' opinion...

I'm not surprised by Gates comments because, it seems his issue with the president was that he wasn't a push over when it came to foreign policy!  Sorry Gates that the commander in chief decided to not give the same people who put us in two wars without and out free reign to do what they wanted. The president has proven repeatedly that he is well versed on foreign affairs and that he will not be bullied or talked into doing what generals or defense secretaries want because, in the end the final say is his! I'm glad the president takes his responsibility as commander in chief serious and doesn't delegate it to those who seem to be stuck on out dated foreign policy. Last time i checked they follow his orders and not the other way around. Sorry Mr, Gates that he isn't the Bush/Cheney team because, when they we're in charge I guess they performed better than the Obama/Biden team right? You are allowed your opinion and that's all it is your opinion! and you clearly hated having a commander and chief who actually knew what the hell he was talking about!

Gates is the typical Baby Boomer. He blames everyone but himself for the problems he helped create. It's always the other guy or the other party that just doesn't get it. This has to the most adversarial do-nothing generation that ever roamed earth.

And, of course, TIME deploys Obama cheerleader Zeke Miller to only report on the White House disagreement.

And, of course, Mr. Miller does not actually offer anything beyond 1 sentence of what Robert Gates wrote in his book about the Vice President.

Excellent job providing context to better inform readers and others who are curious...

Biden has weird and fantastic ideas in steering  foreign policy. During his first visit to the Middle East during Obama's first term, he created a ruckus by making outrageous statements. Currently, Arabs control 99.75 per cent of land in the Middle East. Israel controls 2.5 tenths of one per cent of the Middle East. Biden  believes that that is too much land for Jews. There can be no peace, in his opinon, if Jews control that much land. The US financial aid designated for the Palestinian Authority (PA) is set to grow considerably in 2014 to $440 million, up from $426 million in 2014. That's how taxpayer's money is being squandered.  It is quite transparent that Biden and Obama want to squeeze Israel. Nuclear deal with Iran was deliberately planned in secret to isolate Israel and humiliate Saudi Arabia.   In Iraq also   Biden;s assessment of the situation has backfired and now with repeated bomb blasts, Obama administration has to accept total failure in handling the crisis.. Sophisticated arms  are being supplied to Iraq and Egypt by Obama administration and these lethal weapons   will be stockpiled by these Muslim countries  to be used against Israel in a future war.  No wonder Robert Gates said, “I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades."

Biden was right about Afghanistan.   Obama should have listened to him.   Those generals (and Obama) wasted a lot of American money on their way to playing games with Karsai.   Those generals also knew from the git go Obama was going to be out of there.  They knew it.   He gave them a deadline.   They laughed.   He meant it.

Gates can run for president under the Republican banner and get his generals back there - or back to the Middle East. Go for it.   He can make Petraeus his VP.

@RicardoRiveraTo say that a community organizer who virtually have no military experience has precedence over a man he hired to help him then ignore him is just a stupid assumption on your part.To call Obama Commander in  Chief is an insult to every enlisted man and women he had done wronged with his incompetence.

@jmacGood idea. Just what this country needs after five years of dithering spineless, cowardly, buck passing, hand washing, finger pointing. About time men of courage and decisiveness unlikely to buckle under weight of responsibility. Second time I agree with you Jmac.

@dvd.camdenHe is right. Obama really helped advanced America`s leadership in the world. But you will find it at the rear. If you can sort out America from Zimbabwe, Bangla Desh, South Sudan Yemen and the rest.
