MSNBC Host Melissa Harris-Perry Apologizes to Romney Family

For joking about Mitt's adopted African-American grandson

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry offered an unreserved and tearful apology on her show Saturday for remarks she made last week about Mitt Romney’s family and his recently adopted African-American grandson.

Harris-Perry came under fire after she and a panel joked about a Romney family photo on a segment called Look Back In Laughter. The panel sang the Sesame Street song “One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others,” while Harris-Perry went on to joke about a future marriage between Romney’s grandson Kieran and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s daughter North West.

The host said she “broke the ground rule that families are off-limits” when she quipped about the Romney photo.

Melissa Harris handled this without the tiniest bit of class. As the adoptive parent of a black child I am HIGHLY offended! My youngest child was adopted out of Foster Care at the age of 16 months of age, he was considered unadoptable because he was terminal. There are few black foster parents out there.. and he had 3 months to love. Today he is 9 and thriving. I worship the ground he walks on, he is the love of my life.. I hate it when people pull the race card or pull stunts like this! It is total crap! I am highly offended! My baby is the only black child in my home, not because I dont want more, but because I cannot afford more adoptions! He is special needs but the kindest child I have ever had the pleasure of knowing! Mitt Romney handled this situation extremely well.. Of course he is no Mamma Bear. She is fortunate she was not dealing with me! I would have lost my gosh forsaken mind. She acted like a BIGGOT, the word saved for us white people even if it is unwaranted!

Melissa Harris.. On behalf of my entire family..

KISS OUR GRITS!

Mitt Romney helped lead a church that has never repudiated its characterization of African-Americans as the cursed descendants of the murderer Cain. Mitt publicly displays an African-American adopted child the Romneys call Kieran, an Irish name for "black". And a biracial TV host is threatened with the loss of her job for mocking this? Only in Amerikkka.

News is Mr. Romney has accepted MHP's apology.  Reading the article now and Mr. Romney knows how to be a leader.  Well done Mr. Romney, well done.

Another disgusting , hypocrite Liberal gets it on by bashing a small infant  on her idiot  MSNBC TV show. Then we get the "teary eyed" apology so she won't get canned. DemocRats suck.

There are not many white babies available for adoption and there is a long wait list.  It is easier to adopt a black or asian baby because there are more of them available for adoption.  That is the case in most states.  This is the reason more loving families are adopting black and/or asian babies and children.  Black children were educated together with white children on plantations.  The plantation owner's wife would assemble them all in the parlor and teach them.  I visited a plantation home in Nachez where I saw two pictures hanging together in the front parlor:  the plantation owner''s son and his friend a black boy.  They were both dressed in academy uniforms.  The plantation owner and his wife sent them both off to a private academy together for an advanced education.

African Americans have been taking care of white children for centuries now white people are just returning the favor.

On a side note, Liberals are the biggest hypocrites walking this earth, if you have an opinion that differs from theirs they will rant and rave and try to close you down. They only believe in free speech if it agrees with them.

Mitt Romney's family just joined the band wagon of so many white people adopting black babies. It's the in thing in hollywood. I wonder how many black families would be able to adopt white babies? Not very many I guess.

I Have seen two pictures of the kid in question, he is adorable :).  Looking at the pictures what strikes me is how much his big sister seems to love him based on her body language.  That tells me this kid will be OK big sis will look after him.  I am sorry that in our politically charged times, that is not what jumped out at people first.

Best wishes to the new mom and who knows, this kid might grow up to be the country's first Mormon president ;)

As for hypocrisy both sides have been shoveling quite a bit of it this year, including the 'outraged' republicans who are not so outraged when minority children are shot and killed, stopped by the police even if they are doing nothing wrong, and who would never, in a million years, adopt or marry a black person themselves.

How about a new resolution, only judge others when your house is in order?  Yeah right LMAO.

Anyhow, cute kid :)

All of this is plain stupid.  Neither the right nor the left have much civility left.  It is really time for all TV anchors, TV commentators, radio personalities, politicians, and political activists to just learn to NOT insult people and to learn some manners.  Both sides are way too ready to call others communists, Nazis, socialists, evil, etc.  Usually this means they are incapable of carrying on a reasoned dialogue or they have nothing meaningful to say.

This just exposes the hypocrisy of the politically correct liberal left.

Lou Dobbs   founding anchor insensitive to illegal immigration they are now undocumented workers or if they don't work just undocumented freeloaders . Rick Sanchez  insensitive to jews  and most the people at msnbc who just happen to be Jewish . Pat Buchanan Insensitive to every one because he old school ,call it like he see it. All these men were fired they did not resign to spend more time with their family. Well Melissa as Keith would say  I am Mad as hell, as Mr. Trump would say  YOUR FIRED

The problem is she, Ms. Perry, tries too hard to be black.  She's not!  I don't know what she is but in her defense she doesn't either.  When you don't know what you are you sound and look like she does. She is what we call one of the "lost children."  The lisping, the out-dated synthetic box braids and the over the top and all to many references to being a "nerd."  Find your center Ms. Perry.  What is it you really want?  You want to be famous and get back at the black girls who teased you in middle school.  OK do that and stop acting like your anger at black women and the payback you are enacting is equal to social change.  Hope they make you take a knee.

I say what I said about 'duck dynasty guy' she has the right to  say what she wants and we have the right not to like it.if a conservative  white trash hillbilly with a nasty beard you have that right , when you're a black female you dont.

So why is a black woman apologizing to Mitt over the public display of a black adopted child? This is the same Mitt who is a prominent leader of a Church that officially pronounced all those of African descent as the cursed descendants of Cain, unfit for full membership in the Church. Who hates whom? Why is a Mormon family entrusted with the rearing of a black child? What's next? German Nazis for Jewish kids?

Okay, MSNBC's ratings are already in the toilet, and Harris-Perry's segment/accompanying remarks show why.

This will ony further tarnish a network that was already viewed as a dish rag to begin with.

eagle11772
eagle11772

What she said is racist so she should either resign immediately or be fired immediately.  But since MSNBC is a liberal network, and thus amongst the biggest hypocrites in the industry, they'll let it slide and laugh it off.  HYPOCRITES !

What the heck is going on at MSNBC, recent firings of and/or apologies from hate-filled hosts? Olbermann, Bashir, Baldwin, Harris-Perry? I'm surprised the execs haven't been fired or that Comcast hasn't dropped them. It would be understandable if they got high ratings but their ratings are dismal and have been getting worse.

She seems very sorry,..........................she got called out on her blatant bias......................any clips of her "degrading" Brad Pitt's or Madonna's adoption of Black children?.....no,...didn't think so.

That is what a heartfelt apology should look like. Hannity, Limbaugh and fox and fiends could learn a lot from Ms Harris-Perry.

These people are just playing you poor sheep. They trying to get as much milage out of there chance to change the way people think of Romney. First, tell you about it, and then to apologize for some unmentioned vauge offense. Classic. Although this is the first im hearing about this, it dosnt suprise me. Romney is one heck of a guy, and it would seem that his family follows in his stand up ways. Heard alot of good things this guy has done throughout his life. Kudos.

One of his kids must of adopted the african child, to make him grandfather.

What's so heartbreaking is how will this beautiful child feel when he is old enough to become aware of all this. What she did is not repairable by her lame apology. She needs to go and NEVER be seen in public again. Same goes for her guests.

What a pathetic remark!

At least Ms Harris-Perry had the class to offer a thoughtful, heartfelt apology.

You obviously don't have any.

@TonyaTipton

Foster a white child until the rights are terminated and you will be ASKED TO ADOPT THAT WHITE Child.. Dont believe me? Call The Office OF Community Services in the State Of Louisiana! There are 5000 children, both black and white waiting for an adoptive home.. Black or whilte if you do not have a felony record and can support them you CAN ADOPT! Race had NOTHING to do with it! I can refer you to an adoption worker today if you do not believe me... Have a nice day!

@johnsain Her father is black, her mother is a white Mormon and she was raised in a culture not that different than the Romney grandchild will be. I imagine that gives her a unique perspective on this child. I am still confused about what she is apologizing for, she said he was a cute kid.

@dee So, all republicans would never in a million years adopt or marry a black person.  I must tell several of my republican relatives that they aren't republicans or....perhaps ......... thier children/spouses aren't really black.

@RalphSpyerLu Dobbs Mexican wife was pushing him to go even harder against the Mexicans. I guess since she was born in America she didn't think foreign born Mexicans could never measure up as a real American. Funny how she has nothing to say against the white Latinos coming in from mostly white South American countries, but Mrs. Dobbs was dismissive of her own folks.

@MagicMIkeWhat a bizarre statement, how can you try too hard to be black?  Perhaps you can enlighten us about the 'correct' way to be black?

Are you talking about American blackness, Caribbean blackness, African blackness, or South American blackness or even European blackness?  Within those groups are you talking about the Blackness of the individual countries?  Or are you talking about middle, lower or upper class blackness within those groups?  Are you talking about religious blackness, agnostic, or atheist blackness?  Liberal blackness or conservative blackness?  Frankly I was not aware that there was ONE way to be black.

Is there a way to try to hard to be white?  Is there one way to be white?  Or Asian, or Indian, or Native American or whatever human derived differences that we split ourselves into?

@chadchenjrthat about sums it up.  the mormons need to back off from the black children. this is really stupid...you wonder if the adoption agencies are just stupid, no understanding of the evil behind mormonism.

@mrbomb13 The reason the ratings are in the toilet is the ONE note that they strike all the time!  One note: We are smart! Got it. Morning Joe is the best show they have.  That formula needs to be repeated four or five times a day and Lord please stop the lisping.

@kraftst When you have no soul (like most liberals) it's easy to to put on any face to help further your agenda. Willing to bet that the hate and derision MHP felt for Romney before this "tearfilled apology" has only increased tenfold.

manlyman

@jjbigmotors Romney was never my choice for candidacy. Although I felt he would make a good president, I knew he didn't have the fight in him to actually win against the slanderous hate-filled tactics of the democrats. That said, I never once doubted his integrity, character or compassion.

@Diecash1@GaryAllen

Actually Martin Bashir apologized for his mistake.  I am not sure what the other would have had to apologize for but I have seen Lawrence O'Donnell make apologies.  Anyway I am still waiting for Magyn Kelly and Rushbo's aplologies (or O' Reilly or Hannity, or Rivera or indeed anyone else from Fox)

But it is clear, the crazies, racists and bigots are present.

@dee@MagicMIkeThere is no one way to be black since being an African American is about; CULTURE, HISTORY CONSCIOUSNESS, HERITAGE, RACE. Ignorant fools like MajicMike always try to squash us into one category as if we don't have different opinions and beliefs. Only Latin people think there is only one way to be Latin...namely white and looking Latin.

MagicMIke

@dee @MagicMIke What a bizarre retort filled with mucho vitriol and unnecessary rhetoric.  The manner in which you attack the comment brings your own confusion and disconnect to your own 'blackness'.  No one anywhere stated that there was one way to be black but in your response your rhetoric reaffirms that there indeed is "blackness" and therefore there is "not-blackness".  Breathe hontey and work through some of your own questions about yourself.  However you define yourself fabutulous.  I reiterate Harris-Perry tries too hard to be black.  Take it as you will and have a great and prosperous New Year, hontey.

@BriceTaylor7 @dee @MagicMIke Be nice. I'm not an ignorant fool and I never said that there was one way to be black.  Where is that quote.  Apologize for calling names--that is not nice or intelligent or of a higher moral ethic.

BriceTaylor7
BriceTaylor7

@MagicMIke@deeWhat are you talking about tryin too hard to be black? What the heck does that even mean unless you have bought into that bizarre stereotype of "lost Children"? Huh? "Braids, lisping, getting back at little black girls who teased her" what the hell is that diatribe about you lost 1960's era soul trying to accuse this woman of attacking you when she clearly pointed out the obvious. There is no one way to be black, which is exactly what dee pointed out. It is not just about one look, one way of thinking or one ideology. Man, that is such a close-minded backward point of view you espouse and want so badly to believe. There has never been one way to be black and there never will be just like there is no one way to be white.
