MSNBC Host Apologizes For Segment Mocking Adopted Romney Grandchild

Says she 'meant no offense' after needling Romney's adopted black grandchild

An MSNBC host took to Twitter on Tuesday to apologize after she devoted a segment of her show to mocking former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s Christmas card and his adopted black grandchild.

Melissa Harris-Perry, who hosts an eponymous weekend show on the liberal-leaning network, displayed the card on her show Sunday, which featured Kieran Romney sitting on the former GOP candidate’s lap surrounded by the rest of the Romney family. Harris-Perry said, “A lot of people had emotions about this baby picture this year,” by way of introducing the photo. Guest Pia Glenn, an actress, started singing “one of these things is not like the others,” as the host laughed.

Harris-Perry then joked she’d like to see the younger Romney and North West, the daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, get married in 2040. “Can you imagine Mitt Romney and Kanye West as in-laws?” she said.

Comedian Dean Obeidallah then added, “I think this picture is great. It really sums up the diversity of the Republican Party, the RNC. At the convention, they find the one black person.”

Politicians’ children are generally considered off-limits for the purposes of political attacks. The Obamas, like the Clintons, are fiercely protective of their daughters. On the campaign trail in 2012, some of Romney’s adult children acted as surrogates, but were not the targets of Democratic attacks. Kieran Romney was adopted after the campaign was over.  Romney has retreated to private life after his 2012 election loss, spending time with his family. The photo in question was from a Christmas card he sent to friends, family, supporters, and others he interacted with on the campaign trail

Nearly 48 hours later, Harris-Perry apologized for the exchange on Twitter, saying she “meant no offense.”

Who the ^#$*! are Pia Glenn and Dean Obeidallah, anyway? Is this their 15 minutes of fame? -- because it's more than they deserve. Also, the barrel of endlessly recycled waste known as MSNBC is enough to make any sane person puke up their last three meals. Who can sit and watch this intelligence-insulting fringe-loony propaganda?

And let's not mince words here -- they were being derisive and malicious based on the race of the adopted child. That was almost certainly the intention behind bringing up that photo, and the "panelists" didn't disappoint.

Just when you think MSNBC can't go any lower………

When will this network just go away?!?  As of November 2013, MSNBC's viewership has been cut nearly in half over the year before and was continuing to be hammered by Fox News.  While MSNBC does slightly better than fellow far-left cable news network CNN, they both continue to be ongoing disasters.  Perhaps the constant foot-in-mouth comments at these networks are the result of consternation and panic as they watch themselves slide into oblivion.  Why not do everyone a favor end the agony for all -- viewers and the network -- and call it quits.

I she "meant no offense" then what exactly DID she mean?

Are we supposed to believe that she was simply offering Christmas Greetings?

If you watched the video clip it was really despicable and all too common of the hate and slime that comes from Obama's propaganda network NBC/MSNBC these days.  It was a planned hit piece using a beautiful photo of Romney and his Grandchildren to slime the Romney family and take a nonsensical hit at the Republican party by using Gov Romney innocent little Grandchild and the family photo?  Children, Grandchildren are usually off limits even during the heat of a political campaign, but Gov Romney isn't running or campaigning for anything?  So this was just disgusting, evil, really racist piece of work.  Ms Harris seems to realize how disgusting this whole event was, but a twitter apology is not enough.  This was done under the official auspices of NBC/MSNBC with the participation of her guests.  She and NBC/MSNBC should reconvene this group of guests and issue a real ON AIR apology to the Romney family, families with adopted children, and all of the American people.  That would be a genuine apology that shows they realize how despicable this was.  I won't hold my breath?    I also watched Professor Lamont Hill on CNN defend what was done.  Both the CNN moderator and a guest seemed incredulous that he wouldn't just admit that this disgusting piece of work was totally inappropriate.  He defended it over and over and over.  While Ms Harris-Perry's apology on Twitter seems genuine, if insufficient, it remains clear that much if not most of those on the democrat/extreme left side of things are perfectly ok with this kind of hate.  After nearly 6 years of Obama its amazing how divided the nation has become, and that those on the left would stoop this low?

She somehow tries to enoble herself by appologizing for hurting the Romneys.  As if she is bequeathing that most exhalted of all statuses to the liberal left, victimhoohd, to them.  Thereby she takes credit  for making some restitution.  But she should not appologize for 'hurting'.  This irrelevant gas bag has no ability to hurt the Romneys.  She can however appologize for being a crude and blatant race baiter, and do true penance which always includes a sicere intent to change one's ways.  Fat chance.  She is pathetic and her fans moreso.  She at least makes a living from her revolting views.

And speaking of the Romney family, Mitt is being taken to court on racketeering charges. You see he made his money the old fashioned way. He stole it.

apology by twitter is the act of a coward, but then nothing new for msnbnc

Why apologize? The Romney family should be ashamed of themselves. Why just one token black child, why not two, three or five black children. White people think they can just go to the adoption agency like it’s a supermarket and say, “I think I’ll take this black child,” like it’s a Chihuahua or a shih tzu. Can you imagine if a wealthy black family went to an American adoption agency and said they wanted to adopt a poor white child? They would be denied immediately because American Black people can’t adopt white children in America yet! I can’t wait when American black families start adopting white children, maybe this back-assward country would be a more equal and fair place to live.

The hypocricy today is mind blowing. It is ok to slam a person to the floor as long as you apologize afterwards. It is becoming more and more accepted.

Are ratings more important to you than the future of a child?  Why must you judge others based on the color of their skin?  You all judged Mitt Romney because he was white and wealthy.  You didn't care about all the millions of people who would have been helped by his policies and experience. Instead, you all voted for a man who had black skin because you thought that made him a better person.  Look what you got: A LIAR!!!!

Be thankful that a little boy will now have the chance to grow up in a loving and good home full of promise.  I hope you stop your hate talk this next year and start spreading the message of love so our country can start to heal and not be so divided.

The utter irony Melissa Harris-Perry is half white women born to a  white Mormon mother.

She knows what is like to be a "black child" in a large Mormon family. Yet people attack her for talking about

something she and she ALONE has a unique personal perspective to understand or make fun of.

The true Racism in America, she was attacked because people see her Black skin, if they had took the time

to see or learn her background it might give people pause to think perhaps she saw shades of HERSELF in the Romney

Photo.

Republicans have mocked President Obama and his family in vile, nasty, and obscene terms every day for 5 years.  and never, ever, ever, have there been an apology.  Liberal media my butt.

That hashtag definitely blew the apology out of the realm of sincere to me anyway.

Once again MSNBC degrades themselves and their credentials as an objective "news" organization. This was not a spontaneous joke done in an instant of reaction to a photograph. The Christmas Card was part of an approved and pre-discussed decision by the producers on the final segment. What this insulting and crude attempt to denegrate Republican diversity has done is once again demonstrated the lack of diversity of thought on the production staff and management at MSNBC. This type of biased and offensive race baiting narrative is only possible when everyone in the staff meeting has the same agenda and can not see past their "group think" prejudices and biases. God bless the Romney family for their warm and caring decision to adopt a child (of any race) into a loving family. Adoption should be lauded not mocked for political show. How many times does MSNBC get to do these epic character fails before someone in senior leadership cleans house on this ideologically inbred production staff.

Does anyone else think that tweeting is a cowardly way to make an apology?  The comments were said on the air, why cant she make the apology on the air?

She should have never even brought it up.  The kid is lucky to have been adopted into a solid family and leave it at that.

I sure wish MSNBC (NBC News) hadn't redesigned their website.  I liked the old design.  It was efficient and clear and there were a lot of stories there.  I'm still trying to figure out how to effectively navigate their newly designed website.  At this point, I don't like it.  It seems that I'm getting less news stories than they had with the old design. Otherwise, I just go to other news sites for news.

You have to wonder who is the real racist. They would even mock their own if it does not conform to what they expect blacks to be. Pro abortion, pro gay marriage, liberal and Democrat.

Actually, Melissa Harris-Perry is a white woman. She maybe identify with the race of her father, but legally she is white. By the way, so is our president.

@trueblacknews Nice try trueblacknews.  However, your not being honest, your just being a true follower, right to the false end.  Wrong is wrong , it is tough enough to grow up in a mixed family regardless of the race or sexual orientation of your parents.  Why would anyone want to make it tougher for a child, especially when you know better ?

@DeaconGray@aztecian@ReneDemonteverdethat was nothing.  it was just odd to see all those blonde heads and one black child.  no harm, just a very small joke.  nothing like tthe tea party drawing obama's image as monkey.  it is not validated for the comparison because nothing derogatory was said about inferiority of race or comparing to a sub-species.  so get over it.
