Following Saturday’s attack on U.S. military aircrafts that forced service members to abort an evacuation mission, the U.S. State Dept. announced the safe evacuation Sunday of American citizens from a remote region of South Sudan.
In coordination with the United Nations and in consultation with the South Sudanese government, U.S. service members evacuated 380 American citizens and an estimated 300 citizens of other countries on four chartered flights and five military aircrafts, according to State Dept. spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
“We are working with our allies around the world to connect with and evacuate U.S. citizens as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement said. “For their safety and security, we will not outline specific evacuation plans.”
A White House official tells TIME Obama was briefed of the situation this morning, after National Security Advisor Susan Rice met with members of the national security team as well as personnel in Juba and the region.
