Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, is surrounded by reporters after talking about the final work of the Senate as the legislative year nears to a close, at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was released from the hospital Friday after doctors said he was simply exhausted. He had been admitted the same morning.

Reid (D-Nevada) turned 74 this month. His office said in a statement that he went to George Washington Hospital as a precaution.

“The doctors have diagnosed him as exhausted, not anything more serious, and have cleared him to go back to work,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said. “He spent today resting, talking to family, friends and colleagues, reading the news and discussing Senate business.”

Friday was the last scheduled day of Senate activity for 2013, and Reid had been working around the clock to work out a dispute over changes in Senate procedural rules for confirmation of executive branch or judicial nominees, the Washington Post reports.
