U.S. president Barack Obama shakes hands with Cuba's president Raul Castro at Nelson Mandela's memorial service on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa

President Barack Obama briefly shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro on Tuesday as the two shared a stage for the late Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in South Africa — and the Internet went crazy, with everything from genuine outrage and sarcastic needling with an occasional side of actual approval.

One voice of reason was lost in the madness.

So Obama shook Castro's hand?  I'm sure Mandela would have approved.  But more notable to me was Obama kissed Mandela's widow and did I see right that he walked by Winnie Mandela without recognition?  I hope it was not so.  Per Mandela, Winnie Mandela had a worse time under apartheid than Mandela himself did in working to end it.  She deserves compassion.  And, Obama's taking a picture of himself with two others was not respectful.  No wonder Michelle Obama did not look pleased.

Dear Friends:

We the People have been injured by Obama. WE the People pay your salary and you go to a funeral for someone in Africa. This is a disaster! Appalling to see what the people of Detroit are experiencing. You are akin to the Russian Leader who left his people in a sinking ship and continued his vacation. God decided when this man in Africa should die. Every man, woman and child die and turn to ashes eventually. So too he!

WE the People first not fame, not political prowess for something that has already passed. His life. You could have sent flowers. The Air Force one could have flown to the funeral and flown back to attend the Ball and dealt with the budget and the threat of our government shutting down. Obama you are a fool.

You are a disgrace among all the Presidents historically of the USA. It is not wrong to say you are paid to lead and be part of this country and instead you did not show that priority first.

WE are among those living on the streets, in shelters, without homes, without jobs, without the very protection of all the imports this nation's government has let in here. They are dying in the streets of this nation, cold and having to experience the filth, decay and misfortune for your ego. You avoid the laws all the way to riding the waves of the ocean of Hawaii with no cloths on. Indecent exposure and exploitation as it is called. You Barrack Obama are guilty.

Perhaps the Mormon Temple and other faiths volunteers and Missionaries can come here to the USA and that of Detroit and other and help. WE the People of the USA need food, clothing, medicine and other. Bill Gates and Bill Clinton (s) yes you are blind to what is here because you helped create along with those like Barrack Obama in our Government. Do you hear what I hear! Do you see what I see! They are flocking to the parks for tent cities as it is too cold in other areas and there are insufficient shelters and the burden falls upon the city taxes of these cities and citizens that do not want them to die or be without the basics to survive.

A disgrace. Send the grave or funeral flowers and another you only cared about his color and your ego and fame. When will the changes come? You have a Duty Obama to WE the People of the USA first!

Amen.

US Special Interests (US Embassy) ironically is one of the biggest buildings in laHabana.  A gold building.

And employs nearly 500 Cubans, most of whom speak English, but pretend not to...paid 500 USD/mo by US.  How much does Cuban government pay them?

50 or 400?

In Miramar is el Jefe de Estados Unidos mansion( the de facto Ambassdor), built by FDR. As an OFAC tourist, sometimes you can visit, smoke cigars & drink mojitos at US govt expense.  The wait staff are all Cubans.

IME Very few Cubans in Cuba are Communists/Marxists.  Many more are sadly jinteros/jinteras.

Prime for easy change.

This is all about Obama. There's a good chance he didnt even know who's hand he was shaking. When you're the king no one else matters.

The irony of course is that, the people under me appear to complaining about Cuba's human rights issues, forgetting that it was the US who funded and supported Apartheid. Mandela was always close to America's "enemies" including Castro and Gaddafi.

What a straw man.  These tweets are all basically sarcasm expecting a freak out...except that it didn't happen. no one is freaking out. maybe just try reporting, and not making sh*t up.

President Obama was just being a gentleman. You do not fight fire with fire. Instead you kill with kindness and humility. This by the way does not mean you support or accept  your foe's actions. You are merely not  subjecting yourself to their level of  thinking and actions. Especially at a hero's funeral. A man who forgave his captors and shared the Nobel peace prize with DeKlerk. Mr. Prez you are MY HERO!

I can't believe that Raul Castro would shake the hands of a man who has killed so many innocents through drone attacks!  What an outrage!

I  have been to Cuba 4x in last 10 yrs.  I love the People! All of them even so called Commies, believe me they aren't lol

We have been at a Tipping Point blocked by Florida Cuban emigres for at least 10 yrs.

All that is required for the US to conquer it, is to take down the cruel embargo, allow the flood of US tourists.

Simplest solution avoided by old emigres to their ever ending demise.  But cheap Common Sense VICTORY for all the rest of US.

Take the embargo down. Freedom Wins!  Anyone that has visited this Wonderful, Beautiful Country knows this!

Cubans Most IMO smart honest, innovative kind people in all Latin America. Safest place to visit as well.  Tourists are Kings over locals.

But we cry when we leave.  Castro has done as much economic bad as he has done social good. Kind people Gracias Dios!

And today following that historic handshake, Raul Castro, still under the spell of our supreme leader, ordered to release all political prisoners in Cuba and called for immediate elections. It is expected that after this afternoon's round of golf with the Iranian supreme leader, Iran will renounce nuclear weapons forever and will sign a peace treaty with Israel.

LOL

Obama should go bak to Cuba where he was born. It's bad enough that his half-brother is Raul, but does he need to rub our noses in it?

"Cuito Cuanavale was the turning point for the liberation of my people  from the scourge of apartheid." -Nelson Mandela. Fidel Castro was the biggest supporter of the anti-apartheid movement. He sent soldiers who fought and died for the Liberation of southern Africa. If it were not for the battle of  Cuito Cuanavale, the Apartheid regime would still be in power and Namibia its colony and Angola annexed.Do not forget that the Apartheid government was armed and supported by Britain and America to kill its own people. Obama has to acknowledge American failure that led to Cuba leading the fight to rescue the helpless.

Wow, our President politely shook hands with another President. Let's all freak out and assume he's a Muslim Radical instead of a polite human being doing a courteous thing, at a memorial service for a man who epitomized the meaning of love and care. *eyeroll*

So...after Fidel passes on, the detente  continues and slowly Cuba comes back into the fold, and we all move on.

I'm not sure you know the difference between "freaking out" and "sarcasm".

Your pathological desire to present "both sides" on every issue has lead to silliness like this - you're lumping unhinged rightwing tweets and sarcastic comments about unhinged rightwingers into the same category.

For the record, this is "freaking out"

As a socialist, I have dreamed of the day when Obama would just come out and say that he was one of us. Thank you Mr. President. I haven't cried since my dog died, but I feel the tears building up now.

Donna Brazile's comment is 'freaking out'?

Actually, most of these tweets don't qualify as 'freaking out'. Time, whoever is writing your headlines needs to stop with the linkbait crap. You're not The Huffington Post, for chrissakes.

@dectra I'm no Republican, but most of what I see here is casual comments and some sarcasm. And some of the commenters clearly aren't Republican. I'd say the real stupidity here is with you and any other commenter who see these as "freaking out" because it says so in the title. Try thinking for yourself. Take aspirin for any headaches.

see how many of them the White House can rid of like the Benghazi Four: Ambassador Stevens, Wood, Smith Dogerty!  Amazing what deceit can accomplish in the name of the USA: and all while there are those who cannot handle the truth but keep bowing to EVIL!

The whole concept of Twitter is a joke. Pithy remarks, with no depth. Simple statements for the simple-minded.

Understood. No Castro / el Senor apologia from me. Only Cubans are socially good.. That is why I cry after every visit.

But to conquer we must engage, per ending Soviet hegemony.

It is simple & cheap. End embargo for freedom for dissidents & elections.

Then Flood Cuba with US tourists. End Game.

It worked in PRC & VN sort of with more negative history & less commonality.

US tourists should only use private restaurants & private housing- NOT hotels.

Be flexible.  Cuba is an easy conquest.

@tommyudo @JosephAStocks The best kind of Twitter criticisms are those that remark on the stereotypical idea of a tweet (pithy, no depth, for the simple-minded) while mimicking those very qualities. (You got it all out with 30 characters to spare!)
