Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Tuesday that he was “surprised” by his daughters’ public feud over gay marriage that played out on social media.

Last month, Liz Cheney, a Republican Senate candidate in Wyoming, indicated that she supported a traditional definition of marriage. That prompted her sister Mary’s wife, Heather Poe, to take to Facebook to condemn the comments.

Appearing at the National Press Club on Monday, Vice President Cheney said he wished the battle hadn’t played out in such a visible space. “We were surprised that there was an attack launched against Liz on Facebook, and wished it hadn’t happened,” Cheney said, according to ABC News. “It’s always been dealt with within the context of the family and frankly that’s our preference.”

Cheney said that the situation was difficult for the family, but declined to go any further about the issue of gay marriage. “That’s as far as I’m going to go on the subject,” he said to his interviewer. “Don’t waste your time.”
