Clinton: I Never Denied Smoking Pot

Bill Clinton opens up about his infamous drug quote

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton speaks during the 19th Life Ball show at the Town Hall in Vienna on May 21, 2011

In an interview with Fusion TV’s Jorge Ramos on Tuesday, Clinton said he “never denied” smoking marijuana. “I didn’t say I was holier than thou, I said I tried. I never denied that I used marijuana,” Clinton said.

President Obama has been open about the fact that he experimented with both marijuana and cocaine when he was younger. Ramos asked if Clinton were running now if he would answer questions about his drug use differently. Clinton said the original answer he gave during his presidential campaign in 1992 had been twisted by the media.

Clinton famously claimed he didn’t inhale when smoking weed during his Rhodes scholar years. “When I was in England, I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and didn’t like it,” Clinton said. “I didn’t inhale, and I didn’t try it again.”

Looking back now, Clinton says, “I told the truth. I thought it was funny. And the only journalist who was there said I told the truth.”

Clinton skirted the question as to whether he would have approached immigration differently from Obama. “It’s just not fruitful,” Clinton said. “It’s not fruitful to go back over that ground.”

The former President did make the point that had the public elected a different Congress, immigration reform might have passed by now. Top Republicans in the House of Representatives have refused to vote on a large-scale immigration bill.

He also noted that he has “serious reservations” about spying on world leaders. “Well, it depended on who they were,” Clinton told Ramos. “If we thought they were engaged in hostile acts against the United States … then [American agencies] might do it. But — I’m not sure — we didn’t have the capability then to do a lot of what’s being done today.”

On the subject of the 2016 election, Clinton said he doesn’t know if his wife is running in 2016. “She’s trying to finish her book. She’s gotten her – several projects up and going with our foundation,” he said. “And she believes, and I believe, that the four-year campaign mania is a big mistake.”

Bill Clinton is human and has his fair share of weaknesses.  Let us concentrate on his indomitable strengths where he gave his heart and soul for the betterment of Americans and world citizens by his intelligent policies. He would be a huge source of strength for Hillary if she decides to run for Presidency in 2016. America will certainly need the wisdom and experience of this level-headed ex-President.

Now he says so.  What about all that "I didn't inhale" stuff?  Here's the deal Beeyul:  If you don't inhale, you don't get off.  It's just a principle of the universe.

Wait until the lying scum Hillary tries to run for president.  Don't let her get away with lying about legalizing pot like Obama did.

Hillary has to smoke a joint in Colorado on camera, otherwise she will be a lying scum like her husband.

If Clinton didn't inhale, how does he know he didn't like it?  What a lying scum who won't even come clean before he kicks the bucket.

"I did not inhale"

Oh Clinton.  Stick to political matters please, because clearly you're not the brightest when it comes to representing yourself in the public eye

if he didn't inhale though, he didn't really smoke anything, so yes, he did say he didn't smoke pot

Clinton did say he smoked pot 'once or twice'  He did not say which it was, once or twice.  Therefore I would tend to believe his use of this phrase was simply his way of saying he had smoked pot.  I do not recall him mentioning cocaine at that time.  He is quite clever with words, he convinced many he apologized for his sexual goings-on with the young girl who was young enough to be his daughter.  He did not apologize, he said what he had done was wrong.  He did not say he was sorry for what he had done.  His friendly supporters said she seduced him.  Poor fellow, he couldn't help himself, it was all her fault.

You did so lie. A time or two and you were QUITE emphatic about not inhaling. We in Arkansas laughed and laughed, we know you were into snorting.

Some people think not getting caught in a lie is the same as telling the truth.

Did no one tell him that you are supposed to inhale? Otherwise, what is the point of smoking pot?

Look at the number of potheads we have as Presidents. Obama should ship some of that sh*t over to the Chinese and lower the budget deficit.

he didn't inhale.... yeah right, my butt.

And he didn't have sexual relations with Ms. Lewinski, oh  no-siree.....

Slatlantican

In an attempt to hedge his bets, he gave an internally contradictory answer.  It doesn't strike him as odd, because he has always parsed language to avoid sensitive topics ("I did not have sexual relations with that woman").

Clinton too stupid to understand you have to inhale pot to actually try it?

He simply doesn't want to admit he lied. "I didn't inhale", but I smoked?

Sort of like "I did not have sex with that woman" because I didn't inhale, I guess. Same logic.

Well one thing is for sure, no one is happy with any of the Presidents. There are flaws on both sides, things that are unfair for both sides, a catch 22. So why don't we elect a President that will actually work for all of us? Why do you all have to be so one sided? No one is right. How about starting with humility and then perhaps we can do something ground breaking.

Billy said he never inhaled and that would be a lie and it would suggest he was smoking his cigar when it accidentally fell into a crotch..LOL...:)

Billy's a likeable guy who didn't actually do anything for anyone and yet he's one for the books...:(

During his presidency he didn't do a thing while one of the worst events in history was taking place. (Rwanda )...:(..JMO

Who smokes pot? Politicians, lawyers, doctors, judges, law enforcement, pilots, truck drivers, nurses, teachers, engineers, bankers, CEO's, actors, directors, writers, pastors, rabbis, world leaders and just about everyone else.

Bill Clinton can be criticized for a lot of things. Smoking marijuana is not one of them. If you condemn an elected official for smoking marijuana, then you need to condemn every elected representative for smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol. Cigarette smoking with nicotine gives a much worse high than the mellow effects of THC.  The consumption of alcohol can make a person aggressive and cause major problems like Ted Kennedy experienced in the Mary Jo drowning tragedy.  If all world leaders, including members of the Taliban, gathered at a global peace conference and smoked marijuana before they began their deliberations like the Indian Nations smoked the peace pipe, there would be fewer wars and the world would be a much better place.,

Bill Clinton has blazed so many trails and has come out of each of them smelling of roses. An excellent communicator with facts at his finger-tips, he will be a real asset in Hillary's Presidential campaign should she decide to run. Bill is extremely astute and knows how to rouse a crowd of supporters far better than any of his rivals. His critics and detractors have tried to place banana skins in his path but he has not slipped on any of them. Any decision by Hillary to run at the next Presidntial elections will get Bill's undying support. Such is the chemistry between them.

@dataflunky When I was fourteen, I took one puff on a cigarette (tobacco, not pot).  I immediately choked, laid down the cigarette, and never smoked again.  Clinton has said elsewhere that before he went to England, where he tried the pot, he'd never smoked anything.  I've always interpreted "I didn't inhale" from my own frame of reference--that is, he tried to inhale and gagged on the smoke.

ThomasAndrews
ThomasAndrews

@lex11 Most people would count "0" potheads as presidents (unless you count Washington, and his fields of hemp).  Your reasoning of "smoke pot once or twice= pothead" is, however, stunningly impregnable.  Kudos, fine sir.

He didn't inhale....and he only put "the tip" in. He never was asked if he enjoyed the latter though.

@hizway1 You're right. There is bad on both sides but no good person is willing to drag themselves or their family through what has become the very dirty game of politics. You almost have to be fatally flawed to be willing to subject yourself to it all.

rswfire

@UleNotknow I don't see why that's so hard to believe.  In high school, I started smoking cigarettes.  It was several weeks before a friend pointed out to me I wasn't actually inhaling the smoke.  I did as he said, coughed like crazy, got out of the car in a total daze, and discovered the wonderful world of tobacco.

@Fastgirl I think the issue is again a lie from the only guy in the same league as Obama as a liar.

MooseMulligan

@ozzy3_97 -- yeah, you are right.  He didn't work with Congress (bi-partisan mind you) to help millions of people off welfare and into jobs.  And he didn't balance the budget and leave GWB a surplus.  You sure have a selective memory of the last President to actually do anything domestically since Kennedy.

Slatlantican

 @RossanaLawrenzi

" If you condemn an elected official for smoking marijuana, then you need to condemn every elected representative for smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol."

I don't condemn him for smoking weed, or even for trying to parse the language to cover it up.  Times were different, and he was in a position that few people could have answered any better.

But you need a course in logic, in making that comparison.  Even if all your medical and scientific statements are taken at face value, he was running for the office that is responsible for enforcing the laws of the land, and there is a significant legal difference between smoking an illegal substance and smoking (or drinking) a legal one.

@ChandraPanchabhikesan Hillary Clinton would not get my vote if she runs. She is an abysmal candidate for high office, and the thought of her as President chills me to the bone.

bryanfred1
bryanfred1

@Joe.User @hizway1 Exactly.  What truly talented, level-headed person would willingly put him/herself through it?  There have to be hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. who would be better presidents than the ones we've had over the last couple of decades.

Fastgirl
Fastgirl

@seanster5977 @Fastgirl Not that I am condoning it, but Bill's lie under oath concerned where he put a certain body part. He didn't lie and betray the American people to get legislation passed that the majority of Americans didn't want or need. Obama's lies have far surpassed anything that Clinton ever did. At this point the majority of Americans think Obama is incompetent but also a liar. What a legacy to have.

bryanfred1
bryanfred1

@seanster5977 @Fastgirl Clinton's problems were self-inflicted.  "Yes, I smoked a couple of times in college."  Easy.  Done.  No one would have cared.  Instead we're STILL talking about it.

seanster5977
seanster5977

@Fastgirl @seanster5977 You are right and I am not disagreeing. I just meant that I agree that most Americans are more concerned with obvious and blatant lying than smoking a doobie.

Fastgirl
Fastgirl

@TimBiddiscombe @seanster5977 @Fastgirl A lie is a lie is a lie no matter who tells it or how many people are hurt. The majority of the American people understand this and don't condone lying no matter who does it. You only seem to have a problem with liars if the person doing the lying is your oppositon. As long as you get what you want in the end it doesn't matter how many lies you have to tell or how many people you hurt. Thank goodness most Americans don't operate like you do.
