‘You Can Keep Your Doctor': Obamacare’s Next Broken Promise?

Barack Obama’s broken promise that all Americans would be able to keep their health care plans after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act has infuriated people who took the President at his word and rattled even his staunchest supporters.

But for the President, the real political pain may only be starting. Come 2014, the rest of the country may learn that another high-profile pledge was untrue. “No matter how we reform health care,” Obama said in 2009, “we will keep this promise: if you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period.”

It’s not that simple. In order to participate in health-insurance exchanges, insurers needed to find a way to tamp down the high costs of premiums. As a result, many will narrow their networks, shrinking the range of doctors that are available to patients under their plan, experts say.

(MORE: The Bright Side of Obamacare’s Broken Promise)

“Many people are going to find out that the second part of the promise — that if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor — just wasn’t true,” says Gail Wilensky, who directed the federal Medicare and Medicaid programs under President George H.W. Bush. Factcheck.org labeled the promise “misleading,” noting that while the law doesn’t contain provisions designed to force people to pick new doctors, a switch may be inevitable for some. “The President simply can’t make this promise to anyone,” the site wrote.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

It’s unclear why the President made the promise about keeping your doctor, which he trumpeted as he traveled the country pitching health care reform, and then repeated after the law was enacted. Wilensky says Obama’s health care advisers, who unlike the President are experts in the field, must have known that some people would need to change doctors. “This is not magic stuff,” she says. The Administration stopped advertising the doctor pledge shortly after the law slipped through Congress by a hairbreadth, though the claim remains on the White House website.

“People better understand that there’s a second shoe to drop,” says Wilensky. Obama is “going to have to deal with that,” she says, “because he has more bad stuff ahead of him.”

The interesting thing is not so much all of the lies, but the fact that Americans let Obama get away with it for 5 years.  Even now, about 40% favor him no matter what he does.  The ends justify the means.  This demonstrates the power of a lying media that covers for a lying president.  Time appears to be turning a corner a little here and trying to hold the president slightly accountable, but perhaps that is only because the election is over.  The media will repeat the lies until the election, but prefer that the in-your-face fabrications get toned down a little, since eventually Americans might figure it out.

There will be hundreds, thousands and maybe even tens of thousands of  folks being killed by obamacare towards the end of January when  they no longer have medical insurance or medical care from their doctors because of obamacare.

We need a new, non-profit organization formed to pay to have the poor souls  who will start dying because of obamacare maintain a 24x7 vigil in front of the White House starting 1/1/2014.

Obama and the Democrats are going to have blood on their hands if they  persist in trying to implement their totally unworkable legislation when it starts to kill innocent children. We need to show the nation that  blood so we can end this horror.

That'll get obamacare repealed faster than anything else.

I strongly feel that no matter what, law-abiding American citizens and their doctors deserve the right to keep each other. That is, if both patient and doctor agree to it. The health plans have got to include patient's current doctors.

I am so glad I can keep my plan and my dr.  so glad I voted for Obama, even though  the Census  folk lied about the "great" economy before the  2012 election, but Obama promised I could keep it all, so I will..

LOL, and no, I didn't vote for the Kenyan.

A major broken promise still to come will be that Obamacare would reduce the federal deficit. Does anyone now believe that? The insurance companies will require a huge bailout because of the so-called death spiral. It appears that will happen automatically due to the "risk corridors" what were cleverly put into the ACA.

Senator Rubio is trying to prevent that from happening, and it is not clear if vulnerable Democrats will choose in their own best interest to support him. If the bailout happens, it is another Democrat nightmare. If it doesn't, Obamacare is dead.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/20/us/politics/for-lawmakers-a-gold-plated-insurance-exchange.html

Members of Congress like to boast that they will have the same health care enrollment experience as constituents struggling with the balky federal website, because the law they wrote forced lawmakers to get coverage from the new insurance exchanges.

That is true. As long as their constituents have access to “in-person support sessions” like the ones being conducted at the Capitol and congressional office buildings by the local exchange and four major insurers. Or can log on to a special Blue Cross and Blue Shield website for members of Congress and use a special toll-free telephone number — a “dedicated congressional health insurance plan assistance line.”

And then there is the fact that lawmakers have a larger menu of “gold plan” insurance choices than most of their constituents have back home.

While millions of Americans have been left to fend for themselves and go through the frustrating experience of trying to navigate the federal exchange, members of Congress and their aides have all sorts of assistance to help them sort through their options and enroll.

Lawmakers and the employees who work in their “official offices” will receive coverage next year through the small-business marketplace of the local insurance exchange, known as D.C. Health Link, which has staff members close at hand for guidance.

“D.C. Health Link set up shop right here in Congress,” said Eleanor Holmes Norton, the delegate to the House from the nation’s capital.

Insurers routinely offer “member services” to enrollees. But on Capitol Hill, the phrase has special meaning, indicating concierge-type services for members of Congress.

If lawmakers have questions about Aetna plan benefits and provider networks, they can call a special phone number that provides “member services for members of Congress and staff.”

On the website run by the Obama administration for 36 states, it is notoriously difficult to see the prices, deductibles and other details of health plans.

It is much easier for members of Congress and their aides to see and compare their options on websites run by the Senate, the House and the local exchange.

Lawmakers can select from 112 options offered in the “gold tier” of the District of Columbia exchange, far more than are available to most of their constituents.

Aetna is offering eight plan options to members of Congress, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield is offering 16. Eight are available from Kaiser Permanente, and 80 are on sale from the UnitedHealth Group.

Lawmakers and their aides are not eligible for tax credit subsidies, but the government pays up to 75 percent of their premiums, contributing a maximum of $5,114 a year for individual coverage and $11,378 for family coverage. The government contribution is based on the same formula used for most other federal employees.

Joe Biden isn't making things any better for the president. According to a report this morning, the vice president told a group of seniors that Obama doesn't lie about keeping their doctors because "he's an articulate and clean African American." Good grief! http://goo.gl/9nwNgC

Re: "Come 2014, the rest of the country may learn that another high-profile pledge was untrue."

As time goes on, they will also learn this:

"People respond to incentives, although not necessarily in ways that are predictable or manifest. Therefore, one of the most powerful laws in the universe is the law of unintended consequences." -From the book "SuperFreakonomics"

That in mind, see:

http://nypost.com/2013/10/29/docs-resisting-obamacare/

A poll conducted by the New York State Medical Society finds that 44 percent of MDs said they are not participating in the nation’s new health-care plan.

Another 33 percent say they’re still not sure whether to become ObamaCare providers.

Only 23 percent of the 409 physicians queried said they’re taking patients who signed up through health exchanges.

“This is so poorly designed that a lot of doctors are afraid to participate,” said Dr. Sam Unterricht, president of the 29,000-member organization. “There’s a lot of resistance. Doctors don’t know what they’re going to get paid.”

So many comments condemning Obamacare, and not ONE comment promoting the GOP alternative to Obamacare? I guess it's hard to comment on something that doesn't exist though.

Maybe the Democrats will agree to at least drop the "affordable" part of the ACA. Clearly in my case it is not affordable and will probably mean being not being covered Jan 1 for the first time in my life.

Judging from what the web security experts are saying about the website you may not be able to keep your identity either.

Just another shoe to drop from the multi-footed beast known as Obamacare.

Obama knowingly lied about ACA dozens of times. He deserves impeachment. Even if that does not come about, he will spend the rest of his presidency in disgrace. Well deserved, in my opinion.

Plan for White genocide that 'anti-racists' implement:
1) Flood EVERY and ONLY White countries with MILLIONS of non-Whites
2) Force integrate these non-Whites into White communities. This is done with the aid of Federal Laws
3) Encourage interracial relationships night and day in the media, television and films - in ONLY White countries
4) Anyone that objects is called the r-word!
5) Then, inform White people of their inevitable brown future
-
If this 'plan' continues, my people will become minorities in their own countries within a few decades. This is genocide. And anti-Whites are trying to justify it.
They do this even though GENOCIDE is a CRIME under United Nations law. The 1948 convention specifies that ANY action taken with the intent to destroy an identifiable group (racial, ethnic, cultural) in whole, or in part, is genocide.
Genocide is happening to my people right now.
And anti-Whites are trying to justify the genocide of my people.
But they don't try to justify the genocide of, say, the Japanese or the Turks.
They ONLY try to justify the genocide of my people, White people. I quote an anti-White: "White people were a colonial power for centuries. During this time, they -raped, enslaved and killed- non-Whites." That's basically anti-White reasoning for the genocide of my people.
So how do the actions of my people compare to, say, the Japanese or to the Turkish? Well... I'll tell you.
The Japanese have a horrible past when it comes to their treatment of non-Japanese. They -raped, enslaved and killed- non-Japanese.
But anti-Whites DON'T 1) flood Japan with MILLIONS of non-Japanese, 2) force integrate the non-Japanese into Japanese communities, 3) encourage interracial relationships night and day on television, 4) call Japanese the r-word if the Japanese object to their genocide, 5) then inform the Japanese of their inevitable non-Japanese future. They just do this to White countries. They say they're "anti-racist". But... as you can see... that's not true: They're just anti-White.
What about the Turks? The Turks were a colonial power for 600 years. They -raped, enslaved and killed- non-Turks.
But anti-Whites DON'T 1) flood Turkey with MILLIONS of non-Turks, 2) force integrate the non-Turks into Turkish communities, 3) encourage interracial relationships night and day on television, 4) call Turks the r-word if the Turks object to their genocide, 5) then inform the Turkish of their inevitable non-Turkish future. They just do this to White countries. They say they're "anti-racist", but... as you can see... that's not true: They're just anti-White.
-
Anti-racist is a code for anti-White.

If anyone puts their personal information on that website, then they're just plain stupid. Hackers have already started breaking down the firewalls, and with 500 million lines of code, its on like Donkey Kong. Identity theft has never been easier. IT Security Experts have come out in force warning anyone who will listen. Now the Imbeciles want to try and fix the website as it's running, and not shut it down, another major screw up. When liberals start finding out they have no money, no credit, and it's because they trusted their Dear Leader..I'm going to laugh out loud..

SOCIOPATHS: no conscience whatsoever, along with no empathy, no remorse, no regret, no shame, no guilt, combined with relentless pathological lying,(e.g. covering old lies with new lies) known to lie in serial fashion on same issue until target eventually believes one of the lies, and if challenged often will accuse their targets of being insane, unreasonable, or not understanding what they were previously told. Repeated devious and deceitful behavior along with narcissistic self adoration and grandiosity, seeing themselves as superior to everyone else, continually seeking power over others, masters at shifting blame (and playing the victim card) and experts at manipulating and controlling and (at times) humiliating and shaming their targets - whom they consider fools who deserve to be conned and scammed . See other humans as marks to be used and discarded, especially the gullible. Often leaving a trail of debris with the people and entities they interact with. Emotionally detached, self-absorbed, smug, uncaring, unsympathetic, viewing the world as centered around themselves, with a huge sense of entitlement, easily bored especially when the subject is not about them, combined with haughty and arrogant body language such as a swagger while projecting an air of supreme self confidence, often responding to criticisms or perceived slights with petulant child-like rages, repeated refusal to accept responsibility for their own actions, experts at fake "apologies," taking credit for the work of others while belittling and devaluing what others do,.... generally charming, smooth, and verbally capable, able to talk their way out of most things, experts at maintaining eye contact with their targets - from which they use to judge whether their lies and new (covering) lies are being believed. Skilled actors, often able to shed tears on command, and who generally learn from their late teen years how to mimic and fake emotions to blend in with normal persons, and eventually realize having no conscience is a huge advantage allowing them to exploit, scam, and con others.

@barneydidit How does the GOP not offering an alternative to the ACA plan make the ACA better? There IS such a thing as NOT better than nothing.

"We have to pass it to see what's in it" = "We have to jump off the cliff to see what's at the bottom".

Rushed, unread, legislation, so much so that what it IS or DOES remains unknown at the time of voting on it? REALLY? On as an important issue as our healthcare?

 First, do no harm.

@barneydidit When a bill passes with zero GOP support, because it allowed zero GOP input, this is the result. It shows Democrat arrogance which they are now trying to hide from. Obamacare will constitute an "elephant in the room" for the 2014 elections, pun intended.

@ramvos43 @barneydidit There's a reason every previous major entitlement program has passed with substantial bipartisan support.  It takes full buy-in from all parties involved to design, impliment, repair, and support any such sweeping programs.  The Dems pounded this through on a straight party-line vote using an obscure parliamentary trick normally reserved for reconciling minor differences in budget bills, with "WE WON" as justification.  They own its passage, its design, its implementation and its consequences.  The things that are coming to pass are exactly those identified when the program was proposed, and the reasons Republicans refused to support it.

@jschmidt Oh I read about that plan when it was proposed J. Unfortunately it did nothing for those that had pre-existing conditions, did nothing to eliminate coverage caps, and consisted primarily of vague "spur competition" ideas, without detailing how that was supposed to happen (other than the ubiquitous- sell across state lines idea...which is already part of the ACA).

bryanfred1
bryanfred1

@jschmidt @barneydidit @FredOssefogva I guarantee you this is next.  If you take Medicare, for instance, which is generally pays reasonable reimbursement rates to doctors, then you will be required to take Medicaid and provide care through plans offered under Obamacare.  Never mind that Medicaid no longer covers the costs of most doctors for seeing the patients.
