Cheney Parents Weigh In On Daughters’ Gay-Marriage Feud

Former Vice President Dick Cheney and wife Lynne Cheney tried to turn down the temperature Monday in the ongoing spat between their daughter Liz, a Republican Senate candidate opposed to same-sex marriage, and their other daughter Mary, who is openly gay and married.

But the elder Cheneys also seemed to defend Liz Cheney in the very public feud.

“Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage,” the Cheney parents said in a statement after Liz and Mary had a public blow-up over the issue this weekend on Facebook. “She has also always treated her sister and her sister’s family with love and respect, exactly as she should have done. Compassion is called for, even when there is disagreement about such a fundamental matter and Liz’s many kindnesses shouldn’t be used to distort her position.”

The Cheney sisters have been involved in a high-profile row after Liz reiterated on Fox News Sunday that she does not believe in same-sex marriage and disagreed with her gay sister Mary’s decision to marry her wife. “Liz — this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree,” Mary said on Facebook. “You’re just wrong — and on the wrong side of history.”

Liz Cheney, running for Senate in Wyoming has been under fire from conservatives in that race who say she hasn’t been strong enough in her opposition to gay marriage.

This is a topic best for People magazine or National Inquirer. Why Time would permit such irrelevant topic is beyond comprehension.

Liz is a real class act, and will make a great addition to the Senate.

We're finally seeing a transition from the old guard to the new guard within the Republican party.

With the Democrats, on the other hand, the old, and I mean old, guard still have an intimidating hold on the party.

The winds of change are finally underway in Washington, and the Democrats will be left far behind.

The dog whistle blows, all the little doggies gather round and growl at each other and the big dog takes all the food, clothing, healthcare, housing, jobs, tax breaks, public hand outs and fly's off in his jet to the gated community where he doesn't have to hear the little doggies bark about why they got nothing... they got ,what they deserve, and that is nothing, because they can only hear the dog whistle.

Sad but true.

The feud is made up. So two daughters have different opinions of philosophies. So what? Is there no longer free speech or is that only for the media?

Strange how those always talking about others being tolerant are intolerant themselves. Seems like both daughters love each other but only the media has to find a rift and make a big deal out of it. Oh, but say something about a Kennedy, Clinton or Obama and watch how fast everything is made to sound cozy and nice.

D!ck to Liz: "Good. Use your aggressive feelings, girl. Let the hate flow through you..."

Wow.  D!ck was a heartbeat away from the Presidency and can't even control his own family?

The quote:  This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it become public.

Pained by Mary?   As pained as he was by Kerry?  How pained is Mary?

"and Liz’s many kindnesses shouldn’t be used to distort her position"

Fine, fine we believe you Mr and Mrs Cheney, your daughter is a bigot.

Stay classy--political aspirations trump family.

Why can't I put in a quote from father Cheney?  This article has quotes from him.  If it's that dicey an issue, why even post the above?

@Wisdomwithage class act? Say one thing to her sister at her wedding and another when she runs for office? That's what you call "class"?

@Wisdomwithage Are you serious. Winds of change? More blowhard families and they're going to spread their stupidity all over the country. Haven't you had enough of the war-mongrels in Congress? Cheney=war.

@Wisdomwithage Mary Cheney on her sister Lynn:  What amazes me is that she says she's running to be a new generation of leader. I'm not sure how sticking to the positions of the last 20 or 30 years is the best way to do that.

Class acts don't stab a sister and her family in the back just to win in a Red State that she just moved to.

"Is there no longer free speech or is that only for the media?...Strange how those always talking about others being tolerant are intolerant themselves."

You seem to think that 'Free Speech' means no one can disagree with you.  I hear this a lot from people who feel free to criticize but whine that their 'free speech' is under attack because someone they disagree with wants to be able to respond.

If you really want to see what denial of free speech looks like, look at the town hall meetings being disrupted by tea partiers in 2009.  There, anyone who tried to say anything the teabaggers disagreed with was shouted down.

Also, as I noted above, this rift between the Cheneys isn't about free speech anyway.

@MackKnife

"Is there no longer free speech..."

Free speech isn't the issue.  Both daughters are getting plenty of media attention.  No one is censoring either of them.

The real issue is that one daughter wants to see the rights of the other daughter legislated away.  Liz wants to be elected to a position where she would damage her sister's marriage.

@MackKnife  When two members of a family call each other out publicly over Facebook and declare that they will not spend holidays together due to a fight, that's pretty much the definition of a feud.  Sorry, Mack, you can't make Liz the martyr here.

@hivemaster Now someone has to control their family? What happened to tolerance or is that just a buzz word for you.

Control a family. Wow.

"Stay classy--political aspirations trump family."

This isn't the first time that we've seen one of these people whose ideology is based on self-interest turn on one of their own when it became convenient.

BTW - Don't confuse Mary Cheney with being a victim or the good guy here.  She's just as amoral as her sister.  She'd knock you down and walk over your body if it got her where she wanted to go a bit sooner.  They're all true Cheneys -- like a box full of snakes.

@jmac His first name, appropriately, is slang for the male organ, and gets caught in the profanity filter.  Just replace the i with a !

@Anna888 How do you know ? Because her brother/sister in law says so ? Only way why Liz is better suited for the Senate is the GOP need fighters to replace the retiring RINOs. Other than that who cares about things like gay marriage ? She could supplement Sens Cruz, Paul, Rubio, Lee and the other Young Turks now at the Senate.

@BobJan @Wisdomwithage Talking of war mongrels you better have a long talk with Obama why up to now we are still in Iraq and he just decided to retain fourteen thousand soldiers in Afghanistan.

@bobcn I agree.  we are SUPPOSED TO HAVE Freedom Of religion in the US. If Religion "X" says "we believe that CIVIL marriage is only between opposite gender couples", and if Religion "Z" says "we believe that CIVIL marriage is between opposite gender couples AND same gender couples", then why should Religion "X" take precedence, and trample of the rights and beliefs of Religion "Z"  If that is the case, isn't that the OPPOSITE of "Freedom Of Religion" ?

@MackKnife @hivemaster "What happened to tolerance. . ."   That's the whole point, Mack!   Liz Cheney (and the Red State GOP she represents) have no tolerance - even for family members.   Cheney could have taken the high road on this, but she so desperately wants to win she chose the wrong road.

I can't any of that clan.

Although Mary's spouse calling Liz a carpet bagger has me kind of liking her.

@hivemaster @jmac I thought his first name was now acceptable.   For some reason Livefyre erased about ten of my posts today.  It might just be my computer and my computer illiteracy, or it might be I cut and pasted the quote.

@ReneDemonteverde @BobJan @Wisdomwithage Have any of you figured out that the Congress and the President don't run anything but their mouths. They are all puppets for the uber-wealthy and corporations. Money talks and politicians lie. They're all prostituting themselves and ruining America. Time to get rid of the two party/one head system. They play the American voters pretty good don't they? Obama, Bush, Clinton, Reagan, and all the rest-they're just there to serve their masters of money.

@eagle11772 @bobcn Because marriage as it's being discussed has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with the very long list of rights and benefits that come with being married. Or, to ask you the same question, Why should the rights and beliefs of religion Z trample on the rights of religion X? The answer is very simple. Nobody in religion X is having their "rights trampled". If they were being forced to marry the same sex, you would have an argument. They aren't. As is, you're merely re-defining freedom to mean "I have the freedom to do what I want-including taking away your freedom".
