Newark Mayor Cory Booker announces his plans to run for the U.S. Senate seat during a news conference in Newark, June 8, 2013.

Hours after resigning as mayor of Newark, Cory Booker arrived in Washington on Thursday to begin representing New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.

Booker was sworn into office at noon, replaced Republican Jeff Chiesa, who was appointed interim senator by New Jersey’s Republican Gov. Chris Christie after Sen. Frank Lautenberg, a Democrat, died in office.

Booker restores the Democrats’ 55-45 majority in the Senate, and not a moment too soon for Majority Leader Harry Reid. In the hours after his swearing in, Senate Democrats will bring forward two nominations likely to require 60 votes to pass: Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.) as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and Patricia Millet’s nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, Politico reports.

Booker’s first day will include social calls as well. At 11 a.m., he met with Reid for a photo op, and at 3:15 p.m., he’s scheduled to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House.

Booker— who tweeted Thursday that it’s not his fault his jokes are as they are, because his name is one letter shy of “corny”— noted that he’s being sworn in on Halloween, but he’s apparently more frightened of the specter of Joe Biden than anything else.

Another community organizer who will buy votes from free loaders with our tax dollars. Sooner or later, the country will go bankrupt with this kind of politician and there won't be money left for them to buy votes, give free school lunches, give free birth control, give free cell phones, give food stamps to millions of undeserving people, or anything else. The truly needy will suffer due to the socialists and free loaders among the ultra liberal.

We only need five votes from Republicans for Yellen.   If Republicans ever take over, will Democrats get to insist on 60 votes for the simplest of votes just to get the attention of it's left-wing flank?

No.  "Give us an Up or Down Vote" will be slathered across Fox so Fast and Furious (didn't work - I meant Benghazi)  it will be picked up by the MSM.

Right...that is why the Democrats want to limit cuts to the food assistance program, provide school lunches (so kids can eat) and provide free health insurance to the poor. Those  evil Democrats....they must hate the poor so much by providing for them.

While the Republicans care so much they rather provide subsidies to big Agriculture (while cutting food assistance to the poor), cut food lunches to children, and refuse to help the middle class by NOT expanding medicaid to help cover the gap between the subsidies and their health premiums. Those awesome Republicans...they must love the poor so much that they will take away everything rather than look at ways to improve the functions of these programs.

@jason024, First of all, the TEA Party is against subsidies to the large corporate farms. Second, there are so many free loaders now that are too lazy to work, stay drugged up, or falsely claim disability they are taking the money needed to help the truly needy. What true liberals fail to have the intelligence to see is that we as a country are BROKE and in debt so badly our nation is in danger of becoming a third world country. Despite this, liberal and free loaders want more free stuff and the Democrats are only too happy to buy their votes by putting our children and grandchildren even further in debt. Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn described liberals very well, when he said they were like the apple maggot, eating and eating and expecting no end to come., You all want a free lunch. Life is tough. People can't all have what they want. If they really want something bad enough they will get out there and earn it. If they are truly disabled or infirm, our community will care for them.

@GeorgeDouglas Yet that is not what we hear from the Tea Party. We hear cut/gut everything and eliminate government libertarian side.

Nobody denies that all government programs have waste. I have yet to hear a rational alternative to the ACA that would (cover the uninsured/lower costs long term) or ways to cut programs that don't include widespread cuts (Sequester)  w/o evaluating the costs/benefits of each aspect.
