Republican Senator Susan Collins said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday that she expects a resolution this week, as hopes fall on the Senate to find a solution to the impending debt limit and resolve the government shutdown.
The Senator from Maine was one of several optimistic politicians across Sunday morning talk shows, even as the shutdown enters its thirteenth day. The government is also expected to hit its borrowing limit Thursday.
“It’s taken far too long. We never should be in this situation,” Collins said. “But I do believe there’s going to be a resolution this week.”
Senator Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat, called the shift in focus from the House to the Senate this weekend a “breakthrough” on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
On the same show, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said a failure to resolve the debt crisis would result in “massive disruption the world over” and warned politicians against using “creative accounting” to get around the impending deadline.
The Senate convenes at 1 p.m. Sunday, though CNN reports that no votes are planned.
