Bill Clinton: Obama Can’t Negotiate With GOP on Debt Ceiling, Shutdown

The former president knocks Republicans for insisting on health care law delay

Former President Bill Clinton, who successfully outmaneuvered Republicans over a government shutdown in the 1990s, said Sunday that President Barack Obama is right not to give ground to the GOP this time around.

Clinton, knocking Republicans for using the threat of a shutting down the government or not increasing the debt limit  to delay Obama’s health care reform law, said on ABC’s This Week that “the current price of stopping [a shutdown] is higher than the price of letting the Republicans do it and taking their medicine.”

The House passed a bill Saturday night that would continue to fund the government, while also delaying implementation of the health law for a year. The measure is dead on arrival in the Senate, and Obama has promised to veto it if passed anyway.

“You can’t negotiate over that,” Clinton said. “And I think he’s right not to.”

Barring a last-minute deal, funding for most government operations expires at midnight on Tuesday. The nation is scheduled to reach its borrowing limit next month.

The Teatards notwithstanding, the Republicans' real constituents won't let them do any real damage to their golden goose; the markets (stocks, bonds, commodities, etc.). It's all a big bluff and The Administration is connected enough to know it. Wake me when this particular Kabuki is over.

If Obama folds on this we will have a few weeks funding to run the nation.   Then this same group will ask for more....namely eliminating Social Security or the Right to Form Unions at work.   Later this group may ask to eliminate the right to vote for many minorities, establishment of debtor prisons for failing to pay for credit after they lost their jobs because these paid brown shirts sponsors sent the rest of their jobs overseas.   Even later they may legislate through terror the establishment indenture or slavery for folks to pay off medical debt.   Heck....the Koch and Murdoch can rule over the whole nation.   Why not they will have proved a few terrorists can control a whole nation and eliminate the whole concept of government by the people.  They have proved they can take food form the unemployed and kids in school.  Did you see the Drunken smirk on Michele Bachman.s face?   She took away food money from the needy and got herself a raise in farm subsidies for the land she owns.   Her husband got more money from grants for his clinic that supposedly converts homosexuals into heteros.....despite scientific evidence proves it does not work.   But, remember these are Republicans and they do not believe in science or facts.  And , looking at him, we can see his conversion is working......RIGHT! STOP THESE FASCISTS!  Obama will give up democracy if he folds to them.

No matter how much damage the Teapublicans threaten to do and actually do to the federal government and to the U.S. economy, they will not be able to delay, change or repeal Obamacare -- so let's spare the U.S. the $1B or $1T expense and pass a clean CR  and raise the debt ceiling.

If you actually want to change things, use the Constitutional legislation process.

May I suggest that you watch  "Schoolhouse Rock- How a Bill Becomes a Law" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Otbml6WIQPo

The answer for Obama is simple on this one.  Just say 'no'.

If the GOP is successful in shutting down the government it will cost us $1B. If they are successful in having us not raise the debt ceiling it will cost us $1T.

In neither case will Obamacare be repealed.  In fact, it will only be repealed when the repubs regain the White House.  At the rate they are going it is more likely that they will lose the House, than regain the WH.

The entire effort by the house baggers seems to be to deny Obama a third term.

The house GOP offers to fund the government for 2 months if Obama and the democrats delay the ACA Act for a year and eliminate the tax on medical equipment that helps to pay for the ACA. So, after two months, what else are they going to want? If the ACA is delayed for a year that takes us to where? Oh! I know! The midterms where they won't let it go into effect either! Let the house either accept the clean CR or let them shut down the government. Polls already show that over 50% of the voters will blame the GOP. Once the government is shut down and the stock market falls, let the GOP watch that number rise even higher. No more hostage taking by the baggers.

You don't negotiate with the GOP Taliban.  If the obstructive Selfservatives really thought the Affordable Healthcare Act was going to be a miserable failure, they would just pull up a chair to watch the anticipated trainwreck.  They aren't doing that are they?  Hmmm....

It appears to me that the main problem in the U.S.A. is the republican party. Come election time, I for one will remember how they did not help our country in the past SEVERAL years.

Stand your ground Mr. President. There was a lot of unhappy folks when Social Security was first introduced and now people are thankful we have it.

fitty_three

I think the Dem rank and file are really concerned about whether Obama will stand his ground. I'm hoping that Obama heeds the advice of nearly everyone, even many outside the Democratic party, not to negotiate.

What about the people that want the health insurance, so your going to deny them?  And it's been very difficult for the President to sale ACA because of a 24/7 bashing from the republicans and Fux News Channel.  What's so funny, republicans are quick to say they haven't read it or read very little of it and they hate it. Isn't that what staffers are for?

ParthaNeogy
ParthaNeogy

Why are Republicans so desperate to stop Obamacare now, now?  Is it because, despite most evidence and analyses, they believe it is bad for the country?  Or is it just a crass ploy to fire up their base and mislead enough low information voters to make a difference in the 2014 elections?

ParthaNeogy
ParthaNeogy

Bill Clinton knows a thing or two about Republicans' attempts to hold the country hostage when they feel thwarted.  There are legitimate ways of improving or even repealing a law that one party thinks is imperfect.  Shutting down government or damaging the full trust and credit of the nation are not legitimate tactics.

Clinton knows what he's talking about; they tried it with him too - and he won re-election.

No negotiations. Now, or in Nov. No more taking the economy hostage.

@shepherdwong

Dunno.  They did it in 1995.  This time it's because the GOP is driving toward the edge of the cliff and now they're fighting over the steering wheel.

@sacredh  maybe they don't realize Obama has no third term. So much for knowledge on their part.

I'm a Moderate/Independent and do not subscribe to rank and file, nor voting along part lines. WE the reasonable people need to fight that these crazy right wing's spew while not always accepting what the left want's as well. We NEED to find common ground and, unfortunately, the T'baggin' radical right inhibits that. "Almost" wish for the return of the Neocons as at least "they" understood placation.

@ParthaNeogy It's because they want to get reelected and they've narrowed their base so tightly with gerrymandering that they've trapped themselves in a tight little sewer.   They watched three conservative to conservative moderate Senators lose in the last election to right-wingers (Cruz, Lee and Paul) and know their seats in the House are in jeopardy.

@outsider the Democrats alerady took the country and economy hostage.  Iit's called trillion dollar annual deficits and 17 trillion national deficits.  Obama refused to follow the advice of his own debt commission.  Entitlement state.....negotiate that!

@BobJan, I think they're still holding out hope that Obama gets impeached for something they make up.

@AcidRed

I understand that. It's not even really a "Democrat" issue.  Obama caved in before (which made me furious!) and this is a direct result of that. Obama isn't a bad POTUS at all, but he does make mistakes.  What POTUS doesn't?

I'm a center right but Democrat because of 40 years of Southern Strategy.

@fitty_three @Renee1212 You might as well, isn't  that what Liberals do copy and follow and once  in while  copy and paste.

@Openminded1 @outsider

What is there to converse about? ACA is the law. Period. Also, the debt ceiling, and credit rating have never been held hostage like this.

And last time, Obama conversed with them. And look what happened, the same mess repeats itself.

Conversing already happened, and the TPers walked away. So no more conversing.

@esqwired09 @outsider OMFW. YOU are knocking the the DEM's for this fiscal F' show? Really? YOUR Bush Admin SCREWED this country and the Dem's are left holding the bag. THANKS, neocon...

@esqwired09 @outsider Article 1 Section 8 Clause 1 - the CONGRESS is vested with the power to tax and spend.

The president did not create the deficit (btw, it isn't a 17trillion  deficit, that is the DEBT), nor was the majority of the debt created under this president. CONGRESS passes spending and taxing bills.

Also, the first trillion dollar deficit was under bush, because FY2009 was passed and signed under that president. If you had any interest in being intellectually honest, you would understand that Obama is virtually deficit-negative because of the huge drop in the deficit this year attributable to Obama refusing to re-enact the bush tax cuts by promising to veto them.

No, we hate fox because they  lie, and have been caught in a lie. Multiple times.

I don't watch either CNN or NBC (though i used to watch CNN  - my complaint about CNN is they try so hard to be centralist that they twist themselves into impossible positions in order to give false equivalence to both sides - and are usually in such a rush to get a story first, they don't fact check).

But, all the talking points here are a direct result of what is said on Fox.

Lies and all.

Just look at ACA. People are against Obamacare. Because Fox told them to be. But ask them about the individual parts, and they are for it.

Great propaganda. Great lies.  That's why we hate Fox. Cnn might be incompetent, and MSNBC may be biased - but at least they don't outright lie.

And they're less of hypocrites than Fox.

@Diecash1 @Openminded1 @ParthaNeogy Where is the stupidity dummy, Did billy not lie? The point dumb ass is as you half ass alluded  to all politicians lie and are bs. They may want to start out as heroes, but end up just like the rest it is the nature of the beast called politics. Bill did get a bj in the Oval office , I think it was funny and not to be forgotten.

@Openminded1 @outsider See, you should be tried for sedition you worthless prick. This is a COUNTRY with PEOPLE in it, not a game. I'm tired of the political party of whining hyporitical loosers (in case that isn't clear, the REPUBLICANS) holding the country, and to a less extent, the world, hostage because they are a political party utterly berefit of ideas and the mental competency and maturity of a pre-kindergarden day care class.

Yourself included, Openminded1.

Openminded1
Openminded1

@outsider @Openminded1 listen outsider I do not disagree, what i get mad about is you democrats and liberals not understanding the way the game is played, you guys bitch and bitch to no avail. The GOP is playing a game and if it were the other way around the Dems would look like the ass holes. The TPers as you call them are not the GOP as we have known them for years they really are another  set of nuts, you dems equate them as the same that is a mistake, they do lean more to the right no doubt ,but what they really are is just another bunch of political types trying to get a strong hold and funds to be the new Independents to disrupt both sides of the isle. Sarah is her own entity, with a nice ass and rack nothing more nothing less.
