Three Days From a Shutdown, the Senate Can’t Even Vote About a Vote

An arcane procedure holds up voting for another day

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) speaks to the press after leaving the Senate Chamber after a marathon attack on "Obamacare," at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, September 25, 2013.

Anger boiled over on the Senate floor on Thursday when Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee delayed a vote on a spending bill intended to avert a government shutdown on Oct. 1.

“I think the senator from Texas may be confused,” said fellow Republican Senator Bob Corker when Cruz objected to an arcane voting procedure known as the “unanimous consent request.” The procedure asks Senators to shortcircuit the voting process by skipping the formal tally. Of course, it requires their “unanimous consent,” an increasingly alien concept to the 113th Congress. The vote was rescheduled for Friday afternoon.

“Friday is the appropriate time where the American people can be engaged,” Cruz said in a press conference. So tune in Friday to see if the bill gets lobbed from the Senate back to the House, where top Republican officials are already objecting to it before having seen it, while Democrats insist the time for talking is over. If it passes, just enough funds should be released to keep the government running until Nov. 15, the next looming deadline.

Like an animal in its death throes, the GOP now turns on itself. Rabid weasels everywhere would be proud.

I see Time is recycling the Cruz "Madonna" photo.

I can't see Cruz's baffled lopsided smirk being in any way comparable to Madonna's beatific smile.

These so called representatives should have started working on this problem back in May or sooner. If they had the government would not be facing a possible shut down. These politicians believe it is more important to take their breaks and then tackle important issues when they return. This happened last year in December when it was more important to take their Holiday breaks and they just put a band aide on it upon return.they will most likely continue to do this until the box of band aides runs out.

We as Americans should be telling these so called elected servants of the people(???) that we are n longer going to tolerate the BS that they and out and that they stay in session until such time as they have solutions to the pending problems. No more breaks until your job is done !!!!!

obama can, and should, raise the debt limit himself as authorized by the Constitution.  He may have to wait until the treasury runs out of funds, sometime during October.  Republicans fear the viability of Obamacare.  Should it work, and it will with some changes to a single payer system to make it more fair to all participants by spreading the risk across the board.  Either a single payer system by state or on the national level.

Senate Democrats should stop trying to prevent Ted Cruz from slowing down its progress towards working on the CR.  Just let Cruz become the spokesperson for the GOP, and let them own the responsibility for the shutdown and debt ceiling fiascoes.

The Constitution  (section 4 of the Fourteenth Amendment) gives the President the full authority to raise the debt limit himself without congress if the full faith and credit of the United States is in jeopardy. "The validity of the public debt shall not be questioned" is a directive in section 4. It's the same thing as declaring a national emergency - if congress can't function the President can take action to save the country. I really hope that happens - and I hope Obama gets full credit for saving the USA.

It's what's good for Ted Cruz, not all of us. God bless.

Some "are working to try and make the plan fail [because they] are worried that it will succeed and make them look bad."

Wasn't this the fear with FDR's "social insurance" -- the Social Security Act of 1935?

Way to control your caucus "leader" McConnell.

Now down to the House where we can see "leader" Boehner get kicked around by the TPers.

@mantisdragon91

Maybe they are chawing a leg or two off in an effort to escape the trap they're in.

Won't help much, but it makes for good drama.

Oh, yeah, and a severed leg or two...

Do you think that people stuck in an echo chamber would realize their Pyrrhic Victory?

Congress controls the purse strings- pretty hard to blame Obama (or at least, hard to use any rational argument to blame Obama).

I think you need more exclamation points and perhaps a few bold all cap words. Because if you're serious about what you replied then those simple steps will highlight it that much better.

I will keep it short, since I'm afraid that long explanations will just drive you into outrage.

Having lots of people with no healthcare increases the cost of our premiums. Because healthcare providers HAVE to provide someone with healthcare (the alternative is to just let people die and I assume you'll volunteer for the meat wagon drive).

So this is a moral human issue and one of economic sense. I can sense that you're of the 'I got mine so screw you' but that's a terrible way to operate a functional society. And if you don't like it I'm sure there are some black spots on this globe where you can live out your no society survivalist fantasies.

@Paul,nnto @Robbert5 All the more reason to keep feeding Cruz rope. An intra-party split will do more to help america than cruz himself ever could.
