A new photo of Abraham Lincoln taken on the day of his historic Gettysburg Address has been discovered, Smithsonian reports.
The photo depicts a crowd on the day of the speech, with Lincoln apparently standing among the people. Christopher Oakley, a former Disney animator and Civil War buff who teaches new media the the University North Carolina-Asheville, made the discovery, studying a high-resolution copy of a photograph of the day and identifying a person he believes to be Lincoln in the crowd.
Only three other photos from the Nov. 19, 1863 address have ever been found, and the legitimacy of two of those pictures have been challenged by experts. The leading Gettysburg photo expert, William Frassanito, who has previously discredited illegitimate Lincoln photographs, endorsed the new discovery: “The resemblance is 80 precent in favor.”
