Women in Politics Less Likely to be Corrupt, Study Says

But only in democratic countries.

A woman waits to become an American citizen at a naturalization ceremony held at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), office in New York City, on May 17, 2013.

Here’s another reason to address gender disparities in Congress: Female politicians are less likely than their male counterparts to engage in corruption, and more likely to disapprove of it when they see it, a new study says.

The study, written by political science researchers at Rice University and titled “’Fairer Sex’ or Purity Myth? Corruption, Gender, and Institutional Context,” amassed data from countries around the world to measure the extent to which women participate in and tolerate corrupt practices in various contexts. In democratic countries with generally low levels of corruption, the study says, they are less likely to be corrupt and less likely to tolerate corruption than male politicos. The effect does not hold up in countries where corruption is endemic, however.

“States that have more corruption tend to be less democratic,” study author Justin Esarey told Science Daily. “In autocracies, bribery, favoritism, and personal loyalty are often characteristic of normal government operations and are not labeled as corruption.”

Esary reportedly theorized that women may feel more bound by the political norms of the society in which they are operating. Simply recruiting more women into politics in deeply corrupt countries would thus not decrease corruption; but in less corrupt countries, recruiting more women into public service may indeed decrease overall corruption.

In the United States women currently hold only about 20 percent of seats in Congress.

Folks might hate this article, but it is the truth. Men are inherently more selfish than women which is why it is easier for them to be more corrupt. Not to mention that society as a whole, holds women to way higher standards than men so it makes women think twice about doing wrong, this is a privilege to men of course and they cash out on this every chance they get. This is why women get different treatment when they cheat in relationships or are slammed with an array of harsh words when they do things that are not good. Men themselves holds women to a higher standard and expect them to be better character wise than them. Funny part is that they don't want that to be known by anyone. You can't have it both ways. You either feel women are equal to you or you don't. With that said, if you don't believe men are more corrupt than women get a notepad and watch the news everyday,  place a mark for each female that was in the news for wrongdoing and do the same for the men. Do this for 30 days, chances are you will have a significant amount of marks for males. I have worked in law enforcement for years and have been prison guard in male and female prisons. There is a vast difference in how they act and you can somewhat be relaxed in a female prison without worrying about a riot or getting shanked. Many of the women there are not bad yet fell in love with some stupid guy and wanted to prove loyalty or snapped because he wasn't loyal back.

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." - Abraham Lincoln

Watch what happens when women are equal in power to men at the highest levels. Equal corruption. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Nancy Pelosi, etc., etc., etc.

Being a woman I can tell you for a fact that, on average, women are just as corrupt as men. The corruption merely takes a different form. Also, to be perfectly honest, women get away with a lot of things that men don't. For example, a man is much more likely to receive the death penalty than a woman. There is just something about tears that persuades a judge and jury away from capital punishment.

Makes sense.  Women were initially the whistle blows on Enron and other like companies.  Just the hormonal difference alone can make all the difference in the world. The thought processes and motivation are not the same between men and women in general.  Sure, you'll have "out lyers" but that is because women and men are susceptible to mental illness and their environment the same..what is distinct is the their natural nature.

Wouldn't you assume that the minority that has had less stake in anything and hasn't been around that lock would be less corrupt?  Isn't that the whole point of kicking out the old guys?  Isn't that why we're always talking about "Time for a change" with EVERY election?

What would it be like with more than 50% women after 100 years?  Do we have ANY reason to believe that women would be less corrupt than men?

Women actually want to do what they say they will do and have the strength to do it.  Well almost, Hillary coward to the men, had she stood tall she would have been far more above them, now she is just dust under their feet.  Hillary actually had the backing from the people - not so much any more.

I feel the study is a bunch of  childish nonsense. It seems a lot more likely that a persons propensity for ethical behavior is based on their personal beliefs and or will power than it does to believe it is based on what dangles or doesn't between their legs.

A junk study. There are fewer females in politics. That's why.

Less corruptible perhaps (though doubtful), but if the women in the U.S. congress are any indication, they're far less competent.  I offer as evidence:  Nancy Pelosi, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Barbara Boxer, Sheila Jackson Lee, etc.

Gender:  Yellen vs. Summers - Yellen was commenting on the market crash before it happened in 2005.  She was concerned about the banks and their practices (over the inflation that her male colleagues on the Fed yell about).  Summers pushed derivatives, never caught on to the fact that a recession might occur (as Yellen did) and was against progressive economics about the amount of stimulus we needed.  She supported more transparency in banking.   She's more attuned to blue-collar economic issues.

He's a good-ole-boy Wall Street kind of guy who helped push us into an economic collapse with a Republican mind-set.    While the difference between the two is a nuance - the nuance is important.

I cannot read the entire article with some stupid advertisement over part of it. Is this on purpose?

Thank you so much for address gender disparities in Congress: Female political leaders tend to be less likely then their male counterparts to participate in corruption, plus much more likely to disapprove of it whenever they see it, new research says. The research, produced by political science researchers at Rice University and titled “’Fairer Sex’ or Purity Myth? Inside democratic nations with generally lower levels of corruption, the study states, they're less likely to be corrupt and less likely to put up with corruption than male politicos. The impact doesn't hold up in nations around the world where corruption is native to the island, however. “States which has a lot more corruptness are usually less democratic,”

 Great article!

@whoisjohngalt58 No one said there is no corrupt females in politics. They stated females in politics are less likely to be corrupt and to tolerate corruption, something that is true and proven. I mean, man, go and read it up again and stop setting your boxers on fire for nothing.
I'm from Sweden, and the more women get to power the less corrupt we become.

member of the MRA I'm guessing ?? Check out most corrupt countries & they're all male dominated. Top 10 least corrupt countries all have extreme feminism & funny enough the USA doesn't even make the top 10, it's 19th, so the USA has a long way to go!!

@Micarl Corrupt women = equal corrupt scheme.

Now, women are less likely to be corrupt and tolerate it, even at the highest levels of power.

I don't think you read what they said.  The number of women in politics is irrelevant when they are talking about corruption on a per person basis.

@OwlCreekObserver In a corrupt state you will undoubtedly be less "competent" and also less likely to reach higher power if you don't agree with the corruption.

ToniWilkenson

@OwlCreekObserver  I don't think it is less competent.  I think it is less support because they are women so the obstacles can prove to great.

@jmac So, you're boiling this down to 2 people? Seriously? Time is at it again about trashing men. Here's proof: when is the last article you read in time where it said men were better than women at this or that, and then how many have they written that women are superior at this or that (at least once a month).

@JamesMinze Stating the truth about women in politics being less corrupt = sexism (and corruption by women?) for the American, probably straight, male. Congratulations on making no sense.

@tkulaga Darn right..we are wiser because we pick and choose our battles.  We protect and fight for our rights without war.  I definitely think women have a huge influence no matter where they are.  Influence is a trait of leaders.  Delegation is a trait of managers.  We need leaders in the white house.

whoisjohngalt58

here is the thing. When they ask for your vote, there is a good chance they have ghosts in the closet. Regardless of Sex. Male/female there not one iota of of difference especially at a national level. To be a politician assumes you will do things most people with a modicum of a moral compass would not. the number #1 qualification of any politician is the ability lie like a frigging rug, do so convincingly to the point you get away with it with impunity.

I trust NONE of them. Government should ONLY be necessary to maintain civil order. But it has become everyone's santa claus, Until people realize government CREATES more problems than it's solves there will continue to be corrupt used car sales types greasing palms and giving BJs

@ToniWilkenson @tkulaga and when a woman becomes President, just watch for the war. And yl'know, certainly we haven't had male leaders in the White House. You know, like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln. Work for any female-dominated organization, and you will see just as much conniving, manipulation, backstabbing, coercion as you do in a male-dominated organization. And they do it to each other.

Supralothic
Supralothic

@Micarl Yes, they might do it to each other just like men do. That was not the subject, though.
There are some female Presidents all over the world. They still haven't created any war. They are mostly praised for their firm but peaceful approach.
