Pope Francis Says He Does Not Judge Gay Priests

His comments were short, subtle, but unmistakably direct: “If they accept the Lord and have good will, who am I to judge them? They shouldn’t be marginalized.”

Pope Francis listens to journalists' questions as he flies back to Rome following his visit to Brazil on July 29, 2013

Today the Pope stated that he does not judge gays—a statement that will send shockwaves through the church. His comments were short, subtle, but unmistakably direct. “If they accept the Lord and have good will, who am I to judge them? They shouldn’t be marginalized,” he told reporters on his return flight from Rio de Janeiro to Rome. “The tendency [to homosexuality] is not the problem … they’re our brothers.”

The Pope also criticized journalists for reporting on allegations of homosexuality within the Vatican, saying those matters concerned questions of sin, not crimes, like the sexual abuse of children. He said when someone sins and confesses, God both forgives and forgets. “We don’t have the right to not forget,” he said.

The Pope is the voice of God for hundreds of millions of people around the world. His attitude is a marked departure from his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, who signed a document in 2005 stating that gay men could not become priests. Now bishops all over the world are going to wonder what the Pope’s statement means for them in their own churches.

The most crucial response to the Pope’s comments may come from countries whose governments and cultures are far less open to gays and lesbians than the United States and Europe. Countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, for example, gay activity can be a crime, and violence against gays and lesbians is common. But the country is also nearly 50% Catholic, and if the Catholic Church adopted an attitude like Pope Francis is modeling, the climate toward the gay community could dramatically change.

The response in the United States will also be significant. When the Pope speaks and takes a position on an issue, the United States Council of Catholic Bishops is not going to directly contradict him. Now visible Cardinals across the country will have to consider what steps they will take to not judge or marginalize their gay brothers and sisters. For example, a gay Catholic couple in Oceanside, NY, has been petitioning Cardinal Dolan to break bread with them since Easter. Dolan has not responded to the request, arguing that the couple lives outside his community, and that they want to foster debate. Now the Pope is setting a moral example that indicates he himself would probably dine with them, and that puts Dolan in a tight position.

As the Pope opened up about gays, he reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s position that women cannot become priests. “On the ordination of women, the church has spoken and said no,” he said. “John Paul II, in a definitive formulation, said that door is closed.” But he also argued that the Catholic church has an underdeveloped theology of women, and he seemed to suggest that the church needs to deepen its understanding of women and their roles in society. He reminded listeners that he holds women in the highest regard: “The Madonna is more important than the apostles, and the church herself is feminine, the spouse of Christ and a mother.”

She "forgets" to say that there were an investigation into the alleged  claims of homosexual activity of a priest. And no such activity was found. In that context he said " who am I to judge..." (when no activity has been found). Stop twisting the Popes word's to fit a pro-gay marriage and pro-abortion agenda. This is not going to happen. When the Popes open for a sinner (all sinners) it apply's to a repentant sinner. The recent (31 may) excommunication of an Australia priest Mr Greg Reynolds proves that. From The Telegraph "Mr Greg Reynolds has been laicised and excommunicated by Pope Francis for preaching and teaching about the ordination of women and gay marriage contrary to the doctrines and discipline of the Catholic Church"

This is a deplorably written article: "a gay Catholic couple in Oceanside, NY, has been petitioning Cardinal Dolan to break bread with them"??? Obviously the author has no understanding of theology OR modern parlance. As it is laden with historical connotations and ambiguous in contemporary phraseology, this statement has no meaning without elaboration.

More and more with this Pope I feel translation is becoming an issue:

What about Sodom & Gomorrah?  Seems that the problem was homosexuality and the entire area was eliminated.

Some of what the pope said (my words are in parentheses): "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well. It says one must not marginalize these persons ("marginalize meaning to relegate to an unimportant or powerless position)."..."we must be like brothers & sisters (love the sinner, not the sin)."..."The problem is lobbying either for this orientation (here, the pope acknowledges supporting homosexuality is wrong). ..." Pope Francis was also referring to a Catechism that states there may be many people in the world that have homosexual tendencies & they are suffering trials because this inclination (homosexuality) is disordered (is a sin). The Catechism adds that if they are Christians (the priests and anyone else for that matter), they should give their burden of homosexuality to the Lord's Cross (meaning repentance and moving away from the sin). The pope was saying that we should love each other, but he was NOT saying we should support sins. Homosexuality is a sin. I think what the pope is saying is pretty much what I read somewhere on this: that if a homosexual is a priest, then he should practice as is his calling as long as he does not engage in the sin of homosexual sex. But just being homosexual is sin in of itself, so the pope is wrong about that, too.

So some of the media is twisting things to make it seem like the pope is okay with homosexual priests being homosexual. He isn't. Homosexuality is against God's doctrine (we recognize other sins as being the sins they are deemed as, why do homosexuals want a "pass card" on their sin?). Homosexuality opposes purpose to pro-create and be "fruitful", opposes purity and opposes the harmony of opposites balancing one another out.

Since homosexuality opposes God, homosexuals should not be priests if they haven't repented of their lifestyle; if they haven't even renewed self in spirit and morality. Unless a person has left that lifestyle for the sake of Christ and for the sake of their own spirit, they should not be guiding others in how to live in Christ.

As usual, some people get it wrong. Yes, the Pope said he doesn't judge gay persons (not just priests as you have put it), and as Catholics we actually should judge nobody.  The pope also added to that (and you seem to have purposely missed that out) that (and I will quote): "If a person is gay and seeks the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge that person?  The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this point beautifully but says, wait a moment, how does it say, it says, these persons must never be marginalized and “they must be integrated into society.”  Basically he is still following the line of the Catholic Church which is to hate the sin but love the sinner... yep, we might find that a contradiction of terms, but that is what he said.

The media is now in the habit of trying to paint Pope Emeritus in bad light by trying to compare the two.  A point to note is that as part of the press conference you are quoting from, he made it clear that they are friends and that he (Francis) holds Benedict in very high regard.  He did not go against the document signed by Pope Benedict in 2005 which was not about gay priests but those gay propective priests that literally cannot hold themselves (as it were) ... this also applies to 'straight' priests. So please, away with your partial truths.

I will not try and explain what the Catholic Church's teaching is on the matter, it is very clearly stated in the Catechism.  A priest may be of gay orientation ... but all priests, straight or gay, are called to be celibate ... it applies both ways, so the orientation doesn't matter on the surface and just to close it off ... we are called to respect all people sinners or not, gay or not, murderers or not - what we must hate and fight is sin ... not the sinner. Hope you understand that a bit better; nothing changed, it just got clearer.

Do you want to see the real foundation for the judeo-Christian-Muslim faiths? it is clearly visable on the internet and just last week, the Syrian rebels gave us a front row seat of the ancient laws of Abraham when the Islamic radicals sawed off the heads of three christians with dull knives.

If you think this is terrible, read some history, about the 400 years of witch torture and burnings, the fate of the cathars and so on. The point is that this wonderful man who is pope, has not demanded Papal Infalibility or decreed that history was justified in the slaughter of so many.

however, he has placed himself in a most dangerous position because his actions challenge the ignorant hatred that his church forced onto the evolution of all the other religions for three thousand years, more or less.

now the self righteous religions of the world must now decide to follow or rebel. Most will follow, but the haters will attack(haters being the ultraconservatives of the Muslims and the Christians as well as the jews)

The killing of homosexuals is condoned and encouraged in the wonderful laws of Leviticus. Leviticus 20:13clearly states "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."  Well there you have it, Homosexuality is wrong, and they must pay the ultimate price... IN THE NAME OF GOD!!!

Who else shouldn't people do?

Don't have a variety of crops on the same field. (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)

Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed. (Leviticus 20:9)  Have you ever done that?

If a man cheats on his wife, or vise versa, both the man and the woman must die. (Leviticus 20:10).  I wonder if Dr. Laura would like that one to be enforced?

If a man sleeps with his father's wife... both him and his father's wife is to be put to death. (Leviticus 20:11)

If a man sleeps with his wife and her mother they are all to be burnt to death.  (Leviticus 20:14)

If a man or woman has sex with an animal, both human and animal must be killed. (Leviticus 20:15-16).  I guess you should kill the animal since they were willing participants.  Are they crazy?

If a man has sex with a woman on her period, they are both to be "cut off from their people" (Leviticus 20:18)

Psychics, wizards, and so on are to be stoned to death.  (Leviticus 20:27)

If a priest's daughter is a who re, she is to be burnt at the stake.  (Leviticus 21:9)

People who have flat noses, or is blind or lame, cannot go to an altar of God (Leviticus 21:17-18)

Anyone who curses or blasphemes God, should be stoned to death by the community.  (Leviticus 24:14-16)

Don't let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)

One must wonder why there are so many people wanting to site Leviticus for gay bashing, but they never mention these rules.  How strange.  It is common that a Christian will blow off these old rules with "Jesus came to change the laws, so these are outmoded, and we don't need them", but throughout Leviticus God states that these laws are to be followed forever.  Hmmm.

Seriously, there are more important Papal issues than Gays and their sexuality.

Did Pope Francis say Climate Change was important? And that he wanted more action to deal with it?
If he did, he is at least a good religious leader. If he didn't say much or didn't support his verbostity with a definitive action plan, he should.
But too much Francis may, sadly, lead to more polarization on the issue of Climate Change, with many Protestants and Islamic leaders charging that a Catholic-initiated effort to halt ecologic disaster is a Papist effort to gain control of the planet, and that there is no man-caused Global Warming, only that caused by God -- in each of many alphabetic incarnations.

Meanwhile, Obama and the European Union and China and Brazil and Canada and whoever, all want proof in terms of super disasters that kill millions of their people and can only be attributed to Climate Change which by then, of course, is virtually irreversible, allowing boomers like your senior editors myself to giggle idiotically at the end, and have a stiff scotch or two, or three until lightening strikes us down.

Pope Benedict made a public apology for the past sins of the Roman Church and while this was a great first step, they could not undo the influence that they forced onto the other religions when the forced inquisitions, witch burnings, and Crusades were taking place. Add to this mixture of sadomasicistic hebrew dogma, the Muslims who alos adopted the same laws that had the true jesus crucified under the guise of Roman influence.

History shows us that the Romans had a special relationship with the hebrews that allowed them autonomy in religious indifference.

Then came Pope Francise who, instead of calling for Papal Infallibility, demonstrates piety and washes the feet of common men and women. This very act is so abstract from the office of the pope, that should history be allowed to record these events, we will see the world transformed through love, not at the point of a sword.

Since I am a student of history and have great cause to suspect treachery from this organization that has literally brought hell to earth, I am full of hope now.

However, at the same time of these events, I see Russia, of all places, encating protective laws as we saw in the dark ages that protects religious corruption. These laws are called Blastphemy laws. Google "Blastphemy laws, russia, and Islam" to see how this is a truly dangerous situation.

which Jesus are you referring to?

The history of how Jesus was evolved into the unrealistic version we know today dozens of times.

On the fox news site the really big story is about the new book, "The Zealot" and since the author is a muslim, they discount it. But I am a student of history and know the historical truths that are NOT spoken of in the Bible or any Biblical reference I have read... just a whole lota fairy tales the true religious zealots use to persecute other humans.

Up until about a year ago, I was totally ignorant of Islam and the internal divisions therein just as we have in the Christian Faith. There are ruthless ultra conservative Despots nad barbarians in all of the Judeo-Christian-Muslim faiths.

The only remeeming factor is that there are also good people in all of these faiths. The problem is that the old ideom of "Might makes Right" is all too true. Threaten a person or their families and they will kneel down to worship a cucumber, still on the vine.

part 3

In Ft. Worth there is a mega Christian Church so full of hatred, they planned to protest at the homosexual commedian's funeral that died last week. The family had him crematted instead of a funeral. Did the news story of the planned protest cause the family to make this decission? I do not know, but as I read the news story I was reminded of the good pope that was so reviled by an evil pope, his successor, so that he put his dead body on trial before he had the guilty corpse burned at the stake.

The truth of historical fact is stranger that fiction.

There is a very good highly respected historian named "Geza Vermes", and I recommend his books on the early christians and Jesus.

Open your minds and hopefully, your rear end will follow you into the light.

Jesus reveals to Maria that the Antichrist will be assisted by the “False Prophet” - a religious figure who will rebel against the Pope and establish a “new” and “modern” Catholic Church. The Pope will be driven out of the Vatican, and the False Prophet will take his place and desecrate the seat of St. Peter. He will appear to be a loving and holy figure, and will be considered by many people as a living saint. But the reality is that he is allied with the Evil One. He will merge the Catholic Faith with all other faiths to form a false, one-world religion. Jesus warns priests, bishops and cardinals about the coming “False Prophet”:

He will be seen as the messenger of love, peace and harmony in the world. People will fall to their knees and adore him. He will show you his power and you will believe it is of a divine source. He will wreak havoc in the world and will murder many."

On the outside they will be seen to offer the world salvation in the guise of humanitarian efforts. None of what he is saying is new teaching in the Catholic Church, however what is revolutionary is the tone. While Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI never said otherwise, it is the fact that Francis does so in a very open, candid and approachable way that is baffling everyone.

In other words... if you are a practicing Catholic, you should not be surprised, as this has been taught for a while. For those who never fact checked, or where interested in listening to the stereotypes, this comes as a surprise because the other Popes taught this in a very subdued way and Francis has a much more candid and open communication style.

@SukeMadiq Sin is sin and not one should be ignored or twisted in any way just so that one may, through ignoring it, do what they want with no desire to change it and be better in Christ.

It is a lot better to study the background of verses and chapters rather than just quote them and not even understand what each part is meaning.

Some sins you mentioned are still sins and in the times before Jesus, those sins could be atoned for and if they were not it was severely punished. But since Jesus' coming to bring us salvation, we can be forgiven of those sins with genuine repentance (of course one must have received Christ in their spirit in order to repent and in order to ask God forgiveness through Christ). These are those sins you listed: Lev. 20:9 (since we are told by God to respect our parents, and rightfully so, if we do not we also disrespect God; Deuteronomy 21:18-21 says when a child does not listen to discipline-meaning they DID have a chance to fix their error-then they were brought to the city elders; the parents did not decide on their child's guilt), Lev. 20:10, Lev. 20:11, Lev. 20:14, Lev. 20:15-16, Lev. 20:27 (associated with Satanic, demonic things), Lev. 21:9 (prostitution is still sin; defilement of body), Lev. 24:14-16 (obvious, blasphemous sin).

Other sins were sins in Old Testament because they had to do with keeping people clean (and in the case of the Israelites, Jesus (whom is perfect) had to be born within their line, so God made sure to make rules to maintain the cleanliness and holiness of the line). But they are not sins any longer since Jesus' coming. Some sins, like the mixing of fabrics or the growing of different crops in the same field, were sins since in those days pagans mixed plants, materials, etc. to symbolize "marrying them" together and; therefore, hoping for a good harvest. It was to do with fertility magic and God was keeping His people from involving themselves in the demonology of magic. These are those sins you mentioned: Lev. 19:19, Lev. 19:19, Lev. 20:18 (menstruation was considered unclean; and they had a valid point there), Lev. 19:19 (again, the mixing of different things relating to pagan symbolic marriage for agricultural fertility).

As far as Lev. 19:27 about being forbidden to shave or cut the hair:  Israelites were forbidden to make cuts in his flesh and shave parts of his head as acts of mourning "for the dead" (an act that Gentiles did). In Lev. 21 we read of a similar prohibition that specifically applies to the Kohanim (descendants of Aaron). In Lev. 21 the Kohanim are forbidden from becoming ritually impure from the dead with the exception of their immediate relatives. After listing the relatives that the Kohen may become impure from, we read: "(4) A man shall not become impurified by his people to defile him. (5) They shall not make bald a baldness in their head nor shall they shave the edge of their beard and in their flesh they shall not cut a cut." (Lev 21:4-5)

The context of the passage is explicitly defiling oneself for the dead. In this case the Kohanim are forbidden from various mourning practices. Not only are they forbidden from coming in contact with the dead bodies of their deceased friends, but they are also forbidden from defiling themselves by making bald spots on their heads, by shaving their beards, and by cutting their skin.

So Leviticus 19:27 applied to the Israelites in those days. Again, God maintaining the cleanliness, holiness of them so that they may not fall away from God through pagan practices. Even now getting tattoos is Biblically wrong for anyone to do, since it means marking the skin and the shallow cuts that are applied into the skin during a tattoo session (defiling your temple; the body).

Leviticus 21:17-18 is not about racism or about discrimination toward the disabled (since we already know God loves us equally, but does not love sin). This is about if someone is disabled in any way, they may not be able to fully function in the capacity of a priest.

As far as homosexuality, there are many verses against this and rightfully so.

Since homosexuality opposes God, homosexuals should not be priests if they haven't repented of their lifestyle and if they haven't, spiritually and in action, moved past that sin; if they haven't even renewed self in spirit and morality. Unless a person has left that lifestyle for the sake of Christ and for the sake of their own spirit, they should not be guiding others in how to live in Christ.

We all sin, but no one should ignore when a sin is a sin. Believers should repent and move onto improvement and unbelievers need to be guided into accepting Christ and also removing themselves from sin.

Hate the sin, love the sinner.

@SukeMadiq Old news, this is an appeal to evangelical/fundamentalist Bible quoting, this strategy is a fail on Catholics who view Scripture as one leg of a three-legged stool with Sacred Tradition and the teaching Authority of the Church as handed down thru the Apostles - all three say no to homosexual sex acts.

If the term "Anti Christ" were to be in the dictionary, how would the basic definition read? Think about it, break the term down. what does Anti imply?

Now google the 1500 years after the death of christ and see what torture and horrific deeds were done in his name and his memory?

Read the history of the first three hundred years after his death and see how his memory was subject to hearsay, myth and rumor that was written down as cannon laws..

Now tell me, "Who is the anti-Christ?" The bringers of terror I speak of is not the catholics, although they heavily influenced the name sake we know. Google the Anabaptist, the cathars, the withch hunts of 400 years, the unholy crusades, the Ottoman Empire, The Byzaneine Empires and so on.

You do not speak for the church.

"Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that 'homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered'. They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved."—The Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (para 2357) promulgated in 1992 accepts that the " psychological genesis [of homosexuality] remains largely unexplained". Nevertheless scripture presents homosexual acts as "acts of grave depravity" and "tradition has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered" as they are contrary to the natural law, and close the sexual act to the gift of life. Furthermore the catechism states that "they do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity", and thus under no circumstances can they be approved.

The Popes statements today are at odds with the chuches historic teachings.

I think there is a hole in your argument: under Catholic thinking (and many other denominations, as this is Old Testament stuff), you should only have sex only with your spouse, therefore, there is no need for safe sex if you are following the rules.

Not saying this applies in the real world, but in essence, if you are requiring chastity before marriage and monogamy while in it, why would you need to predicate safe sex? The only way the Church will say something in favor of same sex would be if it says it is OK to have sex outside of marriage. I don't see that happening.

@wyattbuchanan1 What you are talking about and what the Pope was talking about are two different things.  The Pope was talking about "Gays", and saying that it is not his job to judge them if they are in the good will of God.  That is completely in line with scripture.

You are talking about "homosexual acts" which the Pope did not condone with his statements.  I am not Catholic, but I think the church's teaching is pretty clear.  The Catholic Church does not condone acts of Homosexuality.  All the Pope was saying is that he is not judging the sinner.

@TyPollard @GinaMichellePeru-Friccero @shellydanto I am usually appalled by the ignorance that abounds on the internet. Having many gay friends I try to educate when I can, although its probably not doing much good haha. I am in Alaska and we always were so tolerant of others, until our town became full of right wing thumpers who are incredibly ignorant and outspoken.
