TIME Cover: “After Trayvon”

The night that a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman of killing Travyon Martin, Otis Moss III, the pastor of Barack Obama’s old Chicago church, Trinity United Church of Christ, sat down to talk with his son after watching the verdict. “Daddy, am I next?” asked his 12-year-old.

It is a haunting question that parents across the country are grappling with in the wake of Martin’s tragic death. Racially-charged trials and the national debates that follow are not new for this country. But for many, this time feels different. The verdict comes on the heels of the Supreme Court decision that invalidated key portions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a victory of the Civil Rights era. It comes just a month before the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. As the poet Maya Angelou put it, Martin’s death and its aftermath had a collective effect. “What is really injured, bruised, if you will, is the psyche of our national population,” she says. “We are all harmed. We are all belittled.”

Our cover story this week, “After Trayvon,” focuses on the effects of the verdict on a nation with a black President that has yet to fulfill his post-racial promise. The trial may have ended, but its repercussions have only begun.

What stories had pastor Moss' 12-year-old son been told before he asked the question "am I next"?

I haven't heard of a Hispanic boogyman in Chicago.

To put a wanna be thug on the cover and ignore a real hero, George Zimmerman is reason enough why Time which used to be such a respected media outlet is losing its readers. Zimmerman just rescued a family from an overturned pick up truck but it is a drug addled violence filled racist young man who gets honored. Go figure.

Daddy am I next? No son, Time magazine is just stirring the pot to create racial division and get black people to only vote democrat

In the aftermath of the uproar over the Rolling Stone cover photo depicting the Boston bomber looking much like the kid next door (from his own Facebook picture), I find it especially cowardly that TIME editors chose this cover that specifically underplays the human aspect of this tragedy- A photo of an unarmed boy, who also looks like the boy next door in many of his photos that have been posted. A line drawing of a hoodie? Really? Why was there not a full head shot of the young boy who lost his life? Did he not look demonic enough for our collective comfort level? Is confronting, on the cover of TIME, the human life that has been ended too difficult to reconcile with the injustice that has been done?

@susanlstern Boy next door ? If you publish pictures of Saddam Hussein or Hitler when they were ten or twelve many people will also say they look just like boys next door.

After Trayvon we know that at least half the white people in in this country are filled with hate for all minorities.  I already knew that over 50 years ago.   And it's not the President's job to fulfill anyone's post racial promise.  That's up to the people themselves.

@roknsteve Hate for minorities ? It was Martin who called Zimmerman an ass cracker. Never did Zimmerman call Martin a derogatory word. Two Zimmerman  registered Democrat, voted for Obama {probably much to his regret }uses Hispanic to described himself in his voter registration form and various applications. Three, Zimmerman is a white Hispanic just as Obama is a black Irishman.

The whole reason Zimmerman was on Neighborhood watch was due to the sudden increase of homes being robber by black people. That made it a good reason for Zimmerman to call police to help locate this guy and make sure he was not there preparing to do something illegal. The black people robbing houses is the root cause

TRAYVON'S LAW:

Minors are to be protected from strangers at all times. Whereas, a minor who is not in a commission of a crime but looks suspicious, must be handled with care by the ordinary citizen. The ordinary citizen may report only what was seen to the police without exposing or placing oneself to a potentially dangerous situation. The citizen may not follow, pursue, confront, provoke the minor into fear nor get involved with the minor who is not in a commission of a crime. Let the police handle the entire situation.

NO PROOF UP TO THIS DAY

Trayvon's body tells the truth. All he had was 1/4 x 1/8 inch small abrasion on the left ring finger. That's it. No swelling in the hands, no trauma, no blood, no other injuries, he is right-handed, no broken bones, no bruising, no redness, no inflammation, nothing. No sign that he was beating up anyone as Z claimed.

DON'T EVER SAY THAT TRAYVON bashed Zimmerman's head on the cement because there is NO PROOF up to this day.

John Good said he saw "arm movements going downward," though he couldn't be certain the person on top was striking the person on the bottom. In the courtroom, he said he never saw Trayvon Martin slam George Zimmerman's head against the concrete as the defendant claims.

Z could have hit his head on the cement himself during the struggle without Trayvon even touching his head but the story was embellished to put the blame on T. No DNA of Z and no blood of Z on T's hands and nails.

Don't ever say that TRAYVON hit Zimmerman in the nose because there is NO PROOF up to this day. The nose of Zimmerman looked like it was hit by a sharp object.

No one saw Trayvon hit Z's nose. The hands/nails of Trayvon did not have the DNA or Blood of Zimmerman. The recoil of the gun could have hit Z's nose and the story was embellished to blame T. Search Youtube for "KEL TEC - PF-9 - One Hand Shot" and "Hot Girl Nearly Killed By Gun Recoil"

Zimmerman claimed that Trayvon was covering Z's mouth with one hand and pinching his nose with the other hand so he couldn't breath. THERE IS NO PROOF OF THAT.

There is NO blood of Z on Trayvon's hands.
There is NO DNA of Z on Trayvon's nails.

That was why Zimmerman was not fighting back scratching T like what women do when they get attacked. Because T's autopsy proved that Trayvon did not cause the injuries claimed by Zimmerman.

No one saw Trayvon bashed Z's head to the cement.
No on saw Trayvon hit Z in the nose.

Trayvon's body tells the truth.

@_Guest Forensics of gun trajectory confirm that what the witness saw , martin on top of Zmmerman,  The man on bottom yelling for help and nobody did, now after refraining from pulling out the gun before this he had te right to defend himelf with it !

Besides we all know why he was buying what he did at 7-11  PURPLE DRANK

What you're pointing out & other aspects of medical evidence with res[ect to Zimmerman do not support a 'reasonable self-defense' argument.  This is what the prosecution should have been showing all along.  Zimmerman should be awaiting sentencing for manslaughter.  All of us need to know why the prosecutors did such pathetically poor job.

Dear Elizabeth Dias & Time, please tell me when Obama said he was gonna make this country "post racial"?? So let me get this straight. This country was built on stolen land, oppression and free labor etc., but President Obama, not racists, mind you, but one appointed man, had the weight of reversing racism?  Funny, but I sure don't remember any of the white presidents before him being given that arduous task!!! How very rich.  And by rich I mean completely irresponsible and idiotic. Obama never promised such a thing. His election--before any laws were even enacted, caused such a panic that gun sales went through the roof!! He hadn't even done anything yet.  President Obama's election just smoked out all the racists so they felt more embolden to say their nonsense in public.  But these people ALWAYS lived among us and will remain after Obama is out of office. Let's take the blinders off and get real here.

united_we_stand

@ParisEllison guns sold because he was black? Did you learn that from Time too? How easy to view the world like this, every issue is due to race, you can just blame everything on that other race. You actually think all those guns were bought by people to try and shoot Obama for being black? Gun sales had to do with the fact everyone knew Obama would attempt to restrict them.

On a positive note, in a surprising turn of events this morning the New Black Panthers announced they've rescinded the bounty they put on George Zimmerman last year and will instead use the money to visit Disney World. I think that's a decent goodwill gesture. http://goo.gl/IiMOT

Medical evidence:  No concussion.  2 small cuts at the back of the head.  No stitches.  Examined & quickly released from the hospital.

Lead officer on the scene:  Testified he thought that Zimmerman was exaggerating his injuries.

Zimmerman options: could have fought back, tried to run away, shot to wound instead of kill.

No evidence that a reasonable person would feel life was in danger.

In short, no evidence of self-defense.  Just a quick way to end a fight.

It was Trayvon who said, "Get off, get off" first.

Trayvon had the right to stand his ground.

My stomach turned.   After reading Klein and his attack on Sharpton -  I have to read it's Obama's fault.  No.  It's the fault of gun laws in Florida and STAND YOUR GROUND IS ABOUT RACE.    Spinning doesn't change that.  Thank God I'm not black - and live in Florida.

paulejb

@jmac

It was not about race nor "stand your ground laws." It was a clear matter of self defense.

evil.aaronm
evil.aaronm like.author.displayName 1 Like

@paulejb @jmac There would be no need for "self defense" had Zimmerman not stalked and harassed Trayvon, or had Zimmerman stayed in his car, as suggested by the 911 operator.  In a sequence of events, 'B' does not happen without 'A' occurring first, but so many people want to overlook that and only focus on events at the point of the altercation.

Genocide
Genocide

@BobWadas @evil.aaronm @paulejb @jmac There is no proof that car was parked where Zimmerman said it was. Zimmerman never testified under oath as to where his car was parked. Non of the witnesses verified this assumption. The police thought he was on foot. He was never cross examined but deliberately made sure his side was recorded. Very slick of him to tell his version to the jury without the threat of getting cross examined.

@evil.aaronm @paulejb @jmac So watching where someone is going, not exceed 50 feet from where he got out of his car is not stalking, harrassing and he broke no laws

I'm done reading the Times. I feel like these Trevon Martin articles are making this case into a racially charged issue. He didn't die because he was black, he died because he beat Zimmerman to where he feared for his life and acted in self defense. If Martin would have not gotten physical, he'd still be alive.

Trayvon's body does not show he was beating anyone to death or even beating anyone at all. You have no proof that Trayvon slammed Zimmerman's head on the concrete. You have no proof that Trayvon hit Zimmerman in the nose. No one saw these. The autopsy, DNA, blood report do not show that Trayvon caused these injuries.

Z claimed that T grabbed his gun.

No DNA of T on the gun at all.

@_Guest There is no proof Trayvon did that? OK then if he got put on trial for attempted murder he would get off for the same reason zimmerman got off. No proof. If prosecutors  just make up charges with no proof the jury will aqquit. because this is america not the russian gulag system

@DebraJauss  "He didn't die because he was black.. . "

He died because of Stand Your Ground.  Stand Your Ground is racist.   It's draconian.  It's ugly.  Its as ugly as Zimmerman brother making the ironic statement that he thinks Zimmerman might be killed by an armed vigilante who wants to take the law into his hands.   Well, he should be scared for his brother because with Stand Your Ground and Zimmerman's background, Zimmerman might be lucky to be alive after his first encounter with a cop and his use of violence.

@one4REALchange @DebraJauss So if a guy walks up behind a police officer (someone with a loaded gun) and punches him to the ground, the policeman wouldnt be a victim ? Just because you have a gun, are following a suspicious person to make sure he can be located by police does not mean he cant be a victim if someone runs around a corner , hides and ambushes him !
