The Best Sermon About Trayvon That You Will Hear

Pastor Howard-John Wesley rallies his congregation to push back against the verdict.

If you hear one sermon about America’s Trayvon Martin moment, let it be this one. Pastor Howard-John Wesley of Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., preached this powerful message on Sunday, July 14, the morning after a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of Martin’s death. “I have a racial consciousness that lets me know that in situations like this it typically does not work out in our favor,” he preaches. “This is not the first we’ve had to learn to live with a verdict that hurts.”

Wesley tells TIME:

My Christian faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ assures me that an unjust verdict is never the end of the story and the saga of divine grace and justice. I place my faith and surrender my anger to the Lord and then I’m grabbing my shoes and marching with others to the Departments of Justice around this land demanding that the story of Trayvon Martin continue.

For more on how Wesley and other pastors around the country are rallying their congregations to push back against the verdict and the state of race relations in America, read this week’s cover story.

Do those of you who think "he had it coming" or "deserved to be die" feel better by making claims about his character?  Do you feel it was justified based on said character?  It's horrible to read some of the statements below and to think that people actually try to convince themselves that someone "deserved to die" because they had a "history".  That's probably the most ridiculous reason I've ever heard especially when talking about a 17 year old kid.  People do stupid things when they're 17 which most of you seem to forget.  You can't tell me that those of you writing these ridiculous justifications didn't do things that would have been considered "thug" like as based on your definition.  Then there are those that say "well, he was going to die anyway" as if that makes a difference.  No one will know what actually happened that night except for Zimmerman and Martin, but to somehow justify the death of a 17 year old kid because you think he's a "thug" is a sad reflection on society as a whole.  You base your opinion on media broadcasts and a complete lack of understanding.  If you had actually met this kid, you might of thought of him differently since he was a good student and was known by his teachers as "creative" and "happy".  So he got in trouble as we all do when we're kids, but that doesn't mean he should die for it.  You don't have the right to define what's right and what's wrong nor do you have the right to be judge and jury.  I hope you sleep better at night with your warped logic and that someday you'll lose someone close to you that everyone else thought was a "thug"; everyone else except for you, that is.

Trayvon Martin is dead because of the actions of Trayvon Martin.Trayvon was a thug wanna-be gang-banger. There is a record of Trayvon being in possession of jewelry stolen in a burglary that was covered up to save the reputation of the school. Martin's family and all the other race-baiters including members of the Obama Regime were/are calling for Zimmerman's lynching. This case should have never been brought to trial based on the facts.George Zimmerman was doing his job as the neighborhood watchman, when he was attacked by Trayvon Martin and had to shoot him to keep from getting killed. Trayvon Martin attacked George Zimmerman and was bashing his head against the concrete. Zimmerman feared for his life and therefore was justified in shooting Trayvon Martin.People have a God-given right to defend themselves. This was not a case of "Stand your Ground", but self defense.

Soon after his death, these caring parents’set up the Trayvon Martin Foundation so they can get   money “for the cause.” They also trademarked Trayvon’s name. What "grieving" parents do that?  Since then they have settled with the Neighborhood Association’s insurance carrier for a million plus and are looking at a Wrongful Death suit.  They are out there to make money for the "foundation." On Trayvon's tombstone it reads, "Job Well done," What does that mean? Does it mean that his death is bringing them money? They are ringing the cash register. If Tracy Martin and Shirley Fulton truly want to do something constructive teach your children not to be thugs!

What a piece of racist garbage. Yeh moron thats what God wants you to preach about to your congregation.

Zimmerman killed an animal just the same as Michael Vick did. Trayvon was a street thug punk that got what he deserved and justice was served. Shut up and get over it ya hypocrites. Read your bible that was written by NON-BLACK men and learn something.

Trayvon was killed in self defense because he attacked someone. Plain and simple.

Teach your kids better and maybe they won't end up thugs.

He got what he deserved.

This is just religion at it's best!! Only Satan causes the many to maintain focus on what's different!! Gods desire, is for us to maintain focus on what's essentially (in spirit - character) the same. Not at all on what's external (what the eyes can see) and different. We are to zero in on (discern) one's true character. God is not the author of confusion, Satan is! 1 Corinthians 14:33. Christianity is a life of faith in His Word (Principles) towards the manifestation of a better reality... not a religion. The Christian life has to continuously severe the emotional umbilical cord that desires to keep itself attached to the negatives that one believes to be true. We are to discern by the Spirit and move forward... How can one be forgiven (for what they believe to be true) if they don't forgive?

None of us saw or heard all of the facts nor were we instructed in the law by the judge as was the jury.

Our system works and a verdict was rendered.

Howard John is doing exactly what Satan enjoys so much: Mix lies with truth and fill in the blanks with things of which he has no idea. In this case, Mr. John has no idea of the facts in the Zimmerman case and to spew hatred from a pulpit does nothing but instill hate, division and confusion. Exactly what Satan likes misguided preachers to do.

"One of the most important, and remarkably under-publicized facts that came out at trial is that one of the detectives, while interrogating Zimmerman at the police station that night, told him that the entire incident had been caught on surveillance video. The detective was bluffing, but Zimmerman didn’t know that. His reaction: “Thank God”."

This pastor and every other black pastor that used their pulpit Sunday morning to stoke racial conflict rather than courageous introspection should be ashamed of themselves. If Pastor Wesley was acting as a Christian pastor should, he would be looking inward and encouraging his black congregation to confront the choices made by our black brothers which results in fragmented and fatherless families which in turn leads to the reality that fully 52% of the homicides in America are committed by blacks who make up just 13% of our population. Perhaps the true villain in this story is not the George Zimmermans of the world who are guilty of "racial profiling" but rather the thousands upon thousands of black men who walk away from the women they have impregnated, leaving children to grow up adrift in a morally bankrupt black community devoid of positive role models. Perhaps the true villains in this story are the black mothers who beat their children (yes, black families do have higher rates of physical abuse), instilling the value that " might makes right" and modeling the lesson that violence is a solution. The self-indulgent hypocrisy of the black community right now makes me want to puke.

paulzco
paulzco

How dare people like Pastor Wesley stand before his congregation and self-righteously condemn "racial profiling" rather than look squarely in the eye of of the black young men in his congregation and tell them "What do you think would happen when one in every 10 of you are in jail! Pull youselves together and start doing family the right way! You want to see an end to racial profiling? Then keep your pants zipped until your married! The road to the end of racial profiling begins with the choices that WE make every day. How WE present ourselves. How WE instill nonviolent values and respect for the law in our children. Racial profiling will end when WE stop playing the vicitim and take responsibility for our choices." Now THAT would be the best sermon about Trayvon ever!!!!!!

AlphaJuliette

I initially declined to watch this sermon.  However, since I watched The Lynching on Afterburner with Bill Whittle below I decided it would only be fair to watch "The Best Sermon about Trayvon you'll hear" which I did.  One thing I learned is that this definitely was not the best sermon I would ever hear about Trayvon.

A couple of thoughts;

I applaud Howard-John Wesely for "taking off the preacher robes" and talking on a personal level about how he is conflicted about the verdict.  But his whole approach was racially based and racially biased.  He admits that he wasn't the only one "who saw this coming."  And, his admission to having a "racial consciousness" is an admission of the bias that prevents him from accepting that verdict as handed down objectively.  It prevents him from contemplating whether or not the jury actually acted in accordance with the law and did not even consider race in its deliberations.  It allowed him to play the race card which he amply did, vigorously and angrily.

He also makes two very important mistakes.  The 1st is declaring the decision of the jury to be "an unjust verdict."  This was an incredibly open and transparent trial.  Racism was not a part of it.  Neither the prosecution, the defense, the judge nor the jury approached this from a racial viewpoint.  They approached this from a legal viewpoint.  The 2nd mistake was to compare the Zimmerman/Martin incident with that of Michael Vick who served two (well deserved) years for animal cruelty.  In that trial race also did not play a part.  But Howard-John invoked it comparing the punishment a black man received for killing a dog vs. "an unjust verdict" for a white man for killing a teenager.  The message he transmits is that the life of a black teen as taken by a white man isn't as valuable as that of a dog taken by a black man.  Howard-John should consider the sub-culture that we learned Mr. Vick was part of just as we should consider the one Trayvon was part of to make real sense of why Zimmerman ended up killing him.

The one comparison that would have been valid but was glaringly missing from Howards "Best Ever" sermon would have been that of the O.J. Simpson trial.  I wonder if his "racial consciousness" prevented him from doing so?  I wonder if that verdict was a "just verdict" in his estimation?

Then, Preacher Wesely comes around to how to deal with this issue for Black America. In a very eloquent message concerning the unjust verdict against Jesus Christ he talks about the burden Simon had to bear as he carried the cross to the crucifixion site.  He talks about how he carried that burden so his sons wouldn't have to.  He compares that burden to the burden blacks in America have to bear regarding the Zimmerman unjust verdict.  And he says something compelling for all of us.  He says he wants to "carry that burden correctly" so that his children won't have to.  Is this an attempt to prevent the concept of racism from being passed down to the next generation?  On that topic he got it right.

Dezzy

This preacher is a racist..or someone that is just completely oblivious. He should be telling young blacks not to get involved with gangs and drugs...and for black families to take responsibility for their children. Instead he's just ranting about a White Devil that doesn't exist.

I was impressed that this man called for black people to not riot and to bear their dissatisfaction. When everything is racially charged, black people will not be satisfied until the majority of every jury is black, even though they only comprise 15% of the population in Florida.

@thcbakesmeYOU ARE FULL OF CRAP. YOU WOULDN'T KNOW THE TRUTH IF IT BIT YOU IN THE FACE. LET ME ENLIGHTEN YOU WITH THE REAL FACTS..(Lets explore the lies told by certain right wing nut jobs.Trsyvon was in a gang. No he wasn't. If trayvon had been in a gang he would have had a gun and Zimmerman would have been the one found dead. Gang members don't go anywhere without a gun. And they tend to get a little testy when people follow them. Trayvon was a drug dealer, another lie. talking about smoking weed with your friends which a lot of teens do doesn't make you a drug dealer. Trayvon was arrested for gang activity,no he wasn't. Trayvon was involved in some burglaries,no he wasn't and that jewelery story people always mention was never stolen and was listed as found property and not relevant. Trayvon and his cousin Stephen raped a girl, another lie didn't happen and not relevant. trayvon doubled back to attack Zimmerman,an obvious lie. If trayvon doubled back it was for only one reason someone had intercepted him and prevented him from getting home. His friend said he old her he was was gonna tried to lose him again before continuing home.which is exactly what i did when i was his age and a guy followed me from the store i took a different route and lost him before i continued home. I had an advantage Trayvon didn't have i knew the neighborhood like the back of my hand i knew where to go where i could lose him. trayvon didn't live in the neighborhood he didn't know it that well he tried to get back to the only place where he could be safe.unfortunate he thought he had l;ost zimmerman and was trying to home when Zimmerman found him again.where his body was found proves that. He was 60ft away from the t and 360ft from home when he was killed.Trayvon didn't chase Zimmerman he did not grab for the gun he did not say "you're gonna die tonight #%^^$. I believe he said that to trayvon before he killed him.Trayvon didn't circle his truck. trayvon wasn't racist we know from interviews that were done with a few of his friends he had white friends. And even if he were hardly a justification for murder.the prosecution screwed up the case. There was more than enough evidence to convict they let the defense get away with too much bull crap including using an obviously doctored photo. Zimmerman had no horizontal cuts on the back of his head. and with jurors who chose not to even bother with the evidence. And dozens of friends and family who were willing to commit perjury. and a dishonest so called expert which the prosecution did cross examine like they should have. 2 police officers who were more concerned about covering their own asses and a prosecution who was more concerned about protecting a corrupt police department all contributed to a murder going free. there cared nothing about the victim. a kid whose last terrifying words were heard all over the world. TRAYVON BENJASMIN MARTIN WAS LITERALLY SCREAMING FOR HELP. THEY DIDN'T CARE. TRAYVON BENJAMIN MARTIN WAS LITERALLY BEGGING FOR HIS LIFE. THEY DIDN'T CARE. TRAYVON BENJAMIN MARTIN WAS LITERALLY CRYING. THEY DID NOT CARE. In every trial i have ever seen on court tv, they always say "we speak for the victims because they are not here to speak for them selves. That apparently did not apply in this case despite the victims own words being heard in that court room. There are a number of people who should be ashamed of themselves including the prosecution and the people who heard or saw more than they are telling. Zimmerman will go after someone else and it will be a person who is weaker than he is because that is his pattern. He knew Trayvon was no match for him him that's why he went after him in the first place.)

You truly sadden me by the words that you spew...you continue to deny that the Zimmerman/Martin case is about race. Have you ever been racially profiled? If you have never been racially profiled, then I can understand how you blindly cannot see that this case is in fact about race. Zimmerman made recomposed bias assumptions about Trayvon Martin based on Martin's race. Zimmerman quite simply racially profiled Martin. Yes, there were a rash of burglaries that took place in the neighborhood that is understandable but one, he was told several times to not approach Martin and two, he didn't properly identify himself. If a conversation had taken place between the two in an sane, logical manner, maybe it would not have escalated. I believe that Martin may have felt just as threaten and afraid of Zimmerman as Zimmerman was of Martin. Martin was fighting for his life just like Zimmerman was fighting for his.

@TEldenJohnson The missing element to that is, even if the jury was all black and the black community did not like the verdict, they would call the jury uncle toms. You can not win with the black race card BS. It will be used no matter what the verdict maybe. Unless of course a white jury comes up with a not guilty verdict. Even if the black person on trial was on tape commiting a murder along as the murder was that of a white.

@HeatherOMalley This was certainly an eye opening video.  I'm stunned quite frankly because I have been following this trial and the news reports fairly closely and I hadn't heard any of this.

Character counts.  And it certainly came to bear in this story for both individuals involved.  Bill Whittle makes a compelling argument about how this issue became one of race thanks to the media and the politicians and exposes the sub-culture to which Trayvon was part and parcel of which contributed to his own demise.

I'm wondering now how the people who want justice for Trayvon will receive this information.  Not well is my guess.

The black racialists did not listen to the facts of this case. They were stirred up by the race-baiters and the manipulative media and their only concern was a black ‘child” was killed, by a “white” Hispanic. Do you think they are concerned with the multitude of black children that are being killed on a daily basis in cities around the country, by black thugs?Trayvon Martin is dead because of the actions of Trayvon Martin. This case should have never been brought based on the facts. It was brought on by the Obama Regime race-baiters. George Zimmerman was doing his job as the neighborhood watchman, when he was attacked by Trayvon Martin and had to shoot him to keep from getting killed. What does have relevance is Zimmerman's frame of mind when Trayvon continued to bash Zimmerman's head against the concrete. Zimmerman was in fear of his life and believed Trayvon would kill him.therefore, he has/had the right to defend himself.

@JanetLongMitchell  Martin in a gang? Irrelevant even if true. Martin caught carrying stolen jewelry? Irrelevant even if true. Martin committed burglaries? Irrelevant even if true as he wasn't committing one at that time. Photographic evidence of injuries lend credence to Zimmerman's version of events. Police description they picked him up lend credence to Zimmerman's version of events.

Martin doing drugs? Could be relevant and contributory to a paranoiac state of mind. Martin was talking on the phone with a friend thinking he was being followed by someone for some nefarious purpose. Zimmerman was on the phone to police to coordinate an intercept and investigate. You would have people believe Zimmerman would have police listening while he committed murder.

Your belief of what occurred that night doesn't even rise to the level of hearsay. You blind yourself with hatred and emotion and then want everyone else to see with your eyes an animus that could not be proved from the whole of Zimmerman's background. The truth is that you are doing Martin a greater injustice by not accepting the fact that he is dead because of his own actions.

@SeSeB09 @AlphaJuliette It truly saddens me Juliette you just see what the liberal media wanted you to see. Racial stirring. Yes, I have been profiled. I have had people lock their doors, grab their children by the arms and pull them towards them, lean over and whisper to their friend etc. You are not unique. You are quick to judge assuming all people who have been racially profiled would see the case about race. It is your opinion Zimmerman (a minority also who I am sure was racially profiled before) racially profiled Travon when the facts and evidence showed differently. You also state that Zimmerman was told several times to not approach Martin. You also assumed it was Zimmerman's sole responsibility to attempt a sane and logical conversation when Travon perused Zimmerman. Yes, I said Travon perused Zimmerman. Here are the facts of the case you so carelessly quoted to no fault of your own since the media wanted you to hear and feel that way. One, When Zimmerman first called 911 he was not sure of Travon's race. Martin was completely covered with his hoodie and Zimmerman did not mention a race until asked by the 911 operator to make a choice between white, black and Hispanic. Two: 911 never, yes I said never, told Zimmerman, not even once, to not approach Martin. Remember this was recorded. 911 asked Zimmerman if he was following Travon. Zimmerman said yes. 911 then told Zimmerman he did not have to do that. It is actually against the rules for 911 to tell anyone to follow or not to follow. I guess you missed that part. I also guess you did not watch the trial because you would have clearly heard the prosecutors witness (Travon's female friend) when she was on the stand under oath telling about the phone conversation. The part I am speaking of is when she was giving step by step accounting of Travon telling her exactly where he was at all times and at the end she said Travon told her "I am home". HE IS HOME! That means he is safe. Go in side. etc done deal. Call the police and tell them a creepy ass cracker was stalking him. Let the police deal with it right? Wrong. He decided to go back and confront Zimmerman and 4 minutes later he was dead. When he went back he became the aggressor not Zimmerman. He approached Zimmerman smashed him in the nose, knocked him down and started beating him according to witnesses it appeared to be mma style punches over and over again. Recordings show over 45 seconds before the gun was pulled. 45 seconds! In real mma boxing matches a referee will not allow someone on the ground to be hit more than 3 to 4 seconds because the can die from the punches! Martin was not fighting for his life. He was trying to take a life. The difference between you and I is that I understand why my race is profiled. It is not because of race its because of statistics. Twice as many white people are killed by black people every year. You are also forgetting that Zimmerman was not white! Martin was also not the little boy the media was trying to portray. He was a 6'2" tall 165 lb young healthy male. He towered over Zimmerman. What  saddens me is all the young black men killing other young black men for no good reason. It must stop. Parents need to start taking more responsibility for teaching their children. You need to stop confusing statistics with racial issues. Until more people, including whites, start becoming more responsible for their youths this will continue to happen. I will pray for you.

@SeSeB09 @AlphaJuliette a feeling is not the same as a beating..if Trayvon felt "threatened" he also possessed a phone and could have called for help.  Instead he chose to assault someone for making him feel threatened.  I am from an interracial family and to this day I do not believe this case was about race, however I do know that there are a great amount of cases that are.  We need to accept this one for what is was and not an excuse for all the injustices that do occur.  If people want to protest - peacefully- that is their right.  But to use this as an excuse to air your own racism towards others is wrong.

AlphaJuliette
AlphaJuliette

@SeSeB09 @AlphaJuliette With all due respect Miss SeSe I believe you are saddened because I am not jumping on the Justice for Trayvon bandwagon here.  I am objectively presenting my considered opinion why I believe this whole incident was not about race even from the beginning.  That is not spewing.

To inject race into the jury's verdict is to discredit the members of that jury.  It accuses them of ignoring the evidence in favor of a "white man" who happens to be Hispanic.  It is an indictment on them for automatically assuming guilt on the part of Trayvon solely because of his skin color.  Is this what you believed happened in the court room and in the deliberation room?

A video I would suggest you look up and watch is Anderson Coopers interview with juror B-37.  It was pretty revealing about what went on in that deliberation room.  As she relates, the initial vote was three not guilty, two for manslaughter and one for 2nd degree murder.  From there they discussed, reviewed the evidence and then they had to read and understand the law, balance it against the accusations and decide on Zimmerman. This was a painstaking process and one they all took very seriously.

There is much to learn here on a national level.  If any good can come from this event it is my fervent hope that we take another step up toward a truly race-less society where all people, created equal under God, are actually treated that way.

JeedBe
JeedBe

@AlphaJuliette @HeatherOMalley Since I didn't bother to watch the video, I assume you are referring to "Lean" or something similar.  Strange...I knew about this last year so maybe you should do a little more reading.  What sub-culture are you referring to?  It must be "illegal" drugs, especially those that cause a person to become violent.  Were you aware of the "legal" drugs that Zimmerman was using?  Check out the side effects of Adderall (in the amphetamine family) and Restoril (taken for insomnia)...ever heard of the phrase "uppers and downers"?  Since an amphetamine can cause weight loss due to loss of appetite and is known to be used in war situations by soldiers who have to be alert for 24 hours or more, you might look at the photos of Zimmerman when he was arrested and then at trial.  He obviously gained weight...no doubt  he was abusing the amphetamine.  And he was not checked for drugs, which made it very easy for all of his actions to be swept under the rug.

AlphaJuliette
AlphaJuliette

@JeedBe @AlphaJuliette @HeatherOMalley I may just follow up on your suggestion JeedBe.  However, just because I had never heard about Lean does not make me ignorant of a sub-culture of drugs in our society.  It exists I know.  I just don't know all there is to know about it.

As for the sub-culture Trayvon was involved in I suggest you watch the Afterburner video for that answer.
