The Christian Witness of Trayvon’s Mother

If there is one person who has sustained Sybrina Fulton through her son Trayvon Martin‘s death, it has, without question, been Jesus Christ. Tragedy tends to have a polarizing effect on a person’s faith—people often run from God or cling to God when their worlds shatter—and Fulton has used her undesired position in the public spotlight to witness to the God she serves. Her Christian testimony started before George Zimmerman was even arrested. Last March she turned Travyon’s hoodie, a sign of protest, into a spiritual symbol. “He’s in heaven with God—and he has on a hoodie. He has on a heavenly hoodie,” she told TIME. That was just the beginning.

Fulton, an active member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Miami Gardens, tweeted a miniature prayer almost every day of Zimmerman’s trial. It was a profound choice given the extreme attention surrounding the case and the platform for political activism she was suddenly given. She openly prayed “the blood of Jesus over this courtroom,” a Christian expression for asking for God’s grace and healing presence in difficult circumstances. She shared her favorite Bible verses, and multiple times pointed followers to her favorite passage from the Old Testament book of Proverbs: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Fulton made sure everyone knew that Christ was the center of her focus, and that she would trust him even though it meant walking through the valley of the shadow of death.

When the court revealed the not-guilty verdict, Fulton’s profile picture went black. It could have been a simple sign of solidarity with the social media profile “black out” protests over the verdict. But the brief message she tweeted suggests something even deeper—for Fulton, protest for justice and hope amidst grief, ultimately gains true strength from God. “Lord during my darkest hour I lean on you. You are all that I have,” she wrote. “At the end of the day, GOD is still in control.” Her message of hope was retweeted over 12,700 times.

Here’s a look at her Christian witness in 12 tweets:

Could Sybrina Fulton please explain why she expelled her son, Trayvon, from his home?

This is so ironic. The media hates God until it suits them and fits thier agenda. They ignore or mock people of faith, especially people who demostate their faith, but because they want to depict a certain image of her and TM, tweeting scripture is now something to be admired. I am a woman of faith and the blatant hypocracy is telling of the true bias of the mainstream media.

GZ should have stayed in his truck and not try to chase this young "unarmed" child down.

Forgiveness doesn't mean being a fool.

Sybrina Fulton has every right to EXPECT and pursue justice for her beloved son, Trayvon Martin.

If Trayvon Martin can't receive justice in the criminal case against George Zimmerman, perhaps the Lord has a "ram in the bush" in the civil case or possibly at the federal level.

So she accepts that it was wrong of her son to beat GZs head against the pavement and pummel him, as described by eyewitness testimony corroborated by forensic evidence ?

@FredOssefogva

GZ's injuries due to his own negligence.

What would you do if someone was chasing you with a loaded gun?

RebeccaRep

TM did not know GZ had a loaded gun, so that question is not valid. If he had known, he might not have confronted GZ and things may be quite different today.

@TrustinGod @FredOssefogva It was proved by all witness accounts, that he likely NEVER had the gun ever pointed at Trayvon until a couple minutes of lying on his back and being pummled.  The pulling and use of GZ's firearm was a result of a "CRIMINAL" assault in which GZ felt his life was threatened. With that in mind, three female jurors (5 of which are mothers).  It has also been proved that GZ was almost back at his vehicle, as instructed by 911, when T.V. attacked him first.  It is not a crime as a neighborhood watch to follow someone.

I have great difficulty seeing Sybrina Fulton as some model of Christian motherhood.  She raised a son who, by any reasonable account, had a fascination with criminality and violence.  Then, instead of examining her own culpability in her son's downfall, she took it upon herself to behave vindictively towards a man who, by all evidence, was in fact the victim of her son.

And, as already pointed out, there has been an element of money-grubbing displayed by the Martin/Fulton family that's rather unseemly.

@iamtanmay @PaulFrantizek Does the fact I'm White mean anything in particular?  Specifically, does it make what I wrote any less true?

If Trayvon really was the great kid his advocates claim, why didn't his family testify directly to that fact?  Could they have been hesitant due to the rules of the court, which would have then allowed all the sordid details of Trayvon's past - his possession of stolen goods, drug use, history of fights, et al - to come to light?

PaulFrantizek
PaulFrantizek

@TrustinGod @PaulFrantizek @iamtanmay The prosecution had plenty of opportunities to convince the jury that GZ was in fact an 'overzealous Wannabe Cop' and they failed to make the case.  And as far as the 'unarmed kid' meme, that's nothing but a canard - people don't need to be 'armed' to do grave bodily injury.  Look at the case in El Paso of the kid who beat that cop to death.

Rhetoric aside, no credible evidence or testimony has been offered to refute the conclusion that GZ was justified in shooting TM.

TrustinGod
TrustinGod

@PaulFrantizek @iamtanmay

George Zimmerman has a criminal past and Trayvon Martin, although a kid that had some trouble excepting his parent's divorce, had no criminal past.

Does a young "unarmed" kid deserved death due to an overzealous want to be cop?

The Blood of Jesus and forgiveness would accept the jury's verdict and not continue to call for justice.

"Vengeance is mine saith The Lord, and I shall repay says the Almighty".

I've personally known Christians who visited the killer of their child, while he was jail and really did forgive him. That looked and felt nothing like what I'm seeing with Sybrina Fulton.

TrustinGod

@templewind

I believe Trayvon Martin's  parents have forgiven George Zimmerman in their hearts.

However, even with forgiveness one can't be fool also being forgiven doesn't meant Zimmerman doesn't have to pay for his crime.

God forgives but Zimmerman still have to suffer the consequences for his actions.

Poor parenting led to Trayvon's death. Maybe she can trademark bad parenting now?

Trayvon death was caused by "racial profiling" and had nothing to do with bad parenting.

@ReneDemonteverde There is a segment of the black community who really likes to invoke Jesus in their quests for evil. Other races do it, but they get called out for it. It's time black hypocrites got treated equally and are blasted for preaching evil from the pulpit and using Jesus as your mascot in your quest for evil and revenge.

PaulFrantizek

@drtigerclaw @ReneDemonteverde This phenomena was perfectly summed up in Tracy Martin's neck tattoo, 'Crippin' All the Time' miraculously transforming into a pair of praying hands just in time for his 15 minutes of fame.

My condolences to Ms. Fulton - justice was not served - but why is this on the Politics page? Especially with statements such as the following:

> If there is one person who has sustained Sybrina Fulton through her son Trayvon Martin‘s death, it has, without question, been Jesus Christ.

a) He came back? You'd think there would be more coverage of His return.

b) What is political in nature about Ms. Fulton's expressions of faith written about here?

c) Is Dias channeling Amy Sullivan?

RebeccaRep

Why is this on political page? Because the slanted liberal media is using her faith to promote their political narrative. Otherwise...they would not be giving God the time of day

@grape_crush Justice was severed.  Mankind wants to believe that not guilty is not to be justice. Or how come this person who did not do the same thing is guilty so the one who is found not guilty. Well got to know why and if you don't then Why judge?

@grape_crush Libturds use religion when it suits them. If it could roil the problem more like it is now they would use it. A true Christian would have rose above all this and condemn the Sharptons, Obamas and Holders for adding more fuel to the fire in her son`s  memory.

@StephenMatlock But not Zimmerman who mentored black children, defended and protected a black homeless man against the police, personally welcomed a new black resident. Problem with liberals is you chose only those which fits your narrative. And if you chose somebody who you would like to be the villain, you would disregard the truth and his real self instead concentrate on his perceived bad side.

What a beautiful soul! What a tragedy that it took the death of her son to reveal her to us.  Her wounds may never heal, but her faith should help her to bear them.

And yet there are those who comment on this blog who would, it appears, class Sybrina Fulton as a "racial arsonist."  Let's hope they learn something from this blog post.

If there is a God, may God bless and keep Ms. Fulton.

What is a "racial arsonist"? Just wondering, never heard that terminology before.
