New Effort To Tar Marco Rubio As Anti-Woman

EMILY's List hopes to brand Florida Senator Marco Rubio as anti-women ahead of the 2016 elections

EMILY’s List has a message coming for women who may be impressed by Marco Rubio‘s recent performance in the Senate: Don’t be fooled by those dreamy eyes and moderate positions on immigration reform.

The group, which fundraises and advocates for Democratic women candidates and is actively involved in preparing for a possible Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, is firing one of the first shots of the 2016 cycle, aiming to brand the Florida Republican and likely contender as “the most anti-women, anti-family candidate of the GOP field.” The messaging campaign, using email and social media, is expected to ramp up in the coming months.

“This is a senator who was one of only 22 Republican men voting against the Violence Against Women Act,” said Stephanie Schriock, the group’s president, in an interview previewing the effort with TIME. “He has worked tirelessly to roll back women’s freedom.” Central to the EMILY’s list argument is Rubio’s vocal support for an upcoming Republican Senate bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation. The bill, which has not yet been brought for a vote, faces certain defeat in the Democrat-controlled Senate. “I’m very supportive of it. I’m already on a bill that does it in the D.C. area,” Rubio told POLITICO this week. “We’re trying to determine appropriate language that our colleagues can coalesce around, so that’s what we’re working on.”

By attacking him early from the left, the Democratic-leaning effort hopes to dissuade moderates from rewarding Rubio for his leading role in crafting the Senate immigration reform effort. At the same time, Rubio has been under a torrent of fire from the Republican Party’s conservative grassroots over his work on immigration. His potential leadership on the abortion bill has been viewed as a way to win back support on the right. A Rasmussen poll found Rubio’s favorability among Republicans voters dropped 15 points to 58% during the recent immigration debate in the Senate.

On the issue of abortion, the national polling may be on Rubio’s side. A much-cited January Gallup poll found that 64%t of Americans believe second trimester abortions should be illegal. A National Journal poll conducted last month found a narrow plurality support the 20-week ban, by a margin of 48% to 44%.

EMILY’s List and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have compiled long lists of Rubio’s alleged sins against women, ready to deploy against him in a presidential campaign. These include his votes against pay equity legislation and for mandatory ultrasounds before abortions in Florida. Rubio has explained his opposition to the Violence Against Women Act vote by explaining the bill diverted funding for state domestic violence prevention. He called the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which passed in 2009, a gift for trial lawyers.

“We think it’s really important that the American people know his entire background,” Schriock said. “We’re going to track what Marco Rubio does to appease his conservative base and make sure the rest of the country knows where he stands on these issues.”

But Rubio loyalist and Republican operative Ana Navarro called the “anti-women” charge “silly.” “Maybe we should call Marco’s mom, his two sisters, his wife and his two daughters and ask them if he is anti-women,” she told TIME. “I’m not enthusiastic about waging a federal battle over the abortion issue, but I also think people can disagree on this issue and that doesn’t make them anti-women or anti-babies or anti-God.”

“Let’s also not forget that Marco has made the fight against human trafficking, a crime that particularly preys on women, one of his signature issues,” Navarro added. “Women are more than a vagina and I wish groups would be a little more careful about defining somebody as pro-women or anti women solely based on the abortion issue.”

This is absolute Hypocritical.  If it wasn't for Senator Marco Rubio I would not have been reunited with my daughters who were abducted to Saudi Arabia. I had spent countless hours and thousands of dollars in legal fees trying to get my children out of Saudi Arabia.  And even though I had full custody of them, every lawyer I talked to was more concerned with getting their retainer than helping me with the kidnapping of my children.  I finally was so frustrated with going through the legal channels that I wrote a letter to the Senators office and within a week I had the State department in Washington DC on the phone and less than a year later my daughters were home after 6 long years.  This man is all about family and the values that go along with raising a family.  I urge all the negative nay-sayers to do better research.  This Man will make a fabulous leader for this country.

The federal "Violence Against Women Act" is a vile unconstitutional piece of garbage legislation cloaked in completely bull s*!t politically charged label.  If Rubio fought back against that trash, then he's good in my book and I'm not a Republican!

Good. Tar him feather him. Call him anti women, anti gay, anti motherhood, throw everything at him to make it stick. The sooner this RINO is kicked out of office the better for the conservative movement. He can even join the Democrat and they will surely welcome their fellow liberal.

Emily's List is supporting Hillary Clinton just because she is a woman; that's like the NAACP supporting Obama just because he's black..Sexism and racism is just for the other guys, right?

this guy is a joke he can't speak in public (water bottle gate), he has the personality of a fly, between him, Perry who wants all women back in the kitchen withan apron,  Crazy Bachmann and whoever else the cuckoos want to throw in the pot. Keep it up and it will be another Dem cakewalk into the WH whoever runs. These guys are all being manhandled by the little pockets of tea party strength in states (gerrymandering raise your hand) which is also crippling Congress and of course the Koch money wants a tea party nut case so all benefits can be done away with, taxes raised, global warming ignored. So as long as the sane inthis country outnumber the nutcases we are okay.

Nobody really cares anymore what Rubio gets labeled as. Reason being that he has displayed his true intentions, which are an about face on the principals he ran on. In other words,to the Hispanic population,he is a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and has already lost a huge amount of support to another Hispanic true icon of conservativism that almost 90% of Hispanics live by. Can you guess who that might be?

Very, very weak response.  It's akin to suggesting that we talk to Anne Romney or Tag or another of Mitt's sons and ask him whether he favors the 1% or not.  You know it just occurred to me--all those characters on the right who cite Ayn Rand and spew the "makers or takers" line (such as Paul Ryan) often turn out to be Big Takers, as in government subsidies, government contracts, government rip-offs...

You can get any answer you want from a public opinion poll, depending on how you ask the question and what background information people may/may not have.

Tell people that in Texas, only 0.5 percent of abortions are done after 20 weeks )stats for 2010 from the Department of State Health Services) and they will be stunned (that it's that low).  Tell them that the sonograms that are done to detect fetal abnormalities don't get done until 20 weeks.  Remind them that the legislation in Texas had NO EXCEPTION for rape or incest, and very tight ones for life of the mother and fetal abnormalities.  Remind them too that the age of legal consent in Texas is 17 so any girl pregnant before her 17th birthday is a victim of statutory rape.

Tell them all of those things, and more, and then I will consider the public opinion poll more valid.  Most people, like me, were simply poorly informed (and I an older female professional who should have known better).

George Zimmerman would get 49% of the republican vote, better yet Charles Manson would get 49% of the republican vote against a  democrat.  It really doesn't matter who the repugs put up in 2016.  The result will be the same "BIG LOST"

Rubio is dumber than bush. That says a lot. Rubio will never see the republican nomination. That's unfortunate for dems because he'd be easy to beat.

I have no opinion on the good Senator.

But I do have an opinion on the headline of this article -- the use of the word '"Tar" implies a smear tactic, it indicates that the group - Emily's List - is trying to unfairly punish the Senator.  But the article does not back this up.  There may exist a fantastic argument that makes the headline true -- but this is not that argument. A better headline would be "New Effort to Brand Marco Rubio as Anti-Woman" -- which doesn't carry the weight of the word tar, yet still convey's the article's point.

What a Joke! Their Candidate, Hillary Clinton, helped her husband get away with Rape, twice. Does not mind Men, in positions of power (her hubby as Pres) making women get on their knees in front of him, at Work, and force her to perform oral sex on him! She has lied to the faces of Mothers, Daughters & Wives, that their Husbands were Killed because of a 'movie" and nothing she didn't do! And is still lying about it! Do they really want to have this conversation...bring it on!

All members of the GOP are anti-Woman.  It is their official platform.  They think it their business to tell Women who they can or cannot marry.  They seek to tell them what to do with their Bodies, when that is the domain of the Doctor/Patient relationship.  They share the same values concerning Women as  Al Qaeda.  They share the same "We'll Tell 'Ya What To Do, Honey" mentality.  Why can't the GOP and  their Brothers in Al Qaeda just mind their own business?  Just wonderin'.

And we should have a Violence Against People Act, not a Violence Against Women Act. Women initiate domestic abuse against their male partners approximately as often as the reverse occurs.

@terryclifton1 Well I strongly supported Obama in the last election and the ONLY reason I just wouldn't be able to vote for Hillary Clinton is because she's a woman.   Seriously man, chicks are just the worst...lol

@bmmg39 according to police statistics, you are 100% wrong. Men assault women at a vastly greater rate. Why would a physically smaller, weaker woman assault a man, knowing that they will get beaten up? Post facts, not ridiculous opinions that you can't support with data.

Consensual sex isn't rape, smith. Your rant is disgusting!  GOP spent $50 million US tax dollars trying to persecute Clinton-to no avail. He presided over a healthy economy, balanced the budget & decreased the debt & did not get us into unending wars costing too many lives & $2 billion a week & accomplishing nothing except the animosity of the world & the loss of our privacy & civil rights

As you would understand if you understood this issue in the slightest, going by arrest statistics is a fallacious way of going about things, since many police departments espouse the policy of "arrest the man," regardless of who is hurting whom when they arrive.
