It isn’t easy to find examples of political courage in an election, but I give it a shot in my annual column.
Your propagation of the Marxist bent characterized by the values infused in your article could not be more clear.
I'm just amazed you placed Hillary Clinton in the Teddy Awards category. I agree she has been an overall great Secretary. But come on Joe! Your timing is really off with the whole Benghazi episode. This is a person who has dodged, time and again, answering any questions over the event that led to the death of @Chris Stevens.
It appears that Mrs. Clinton is more worried about her legacy at this point, than telling the American people what did or did not happen in Libya.
Just looking at the latest Time magazine in totality makes me wonder if there is anything called objective journalism anymore. It's just so biased it's beyond comprehension. Hey Joe! Where's the balance?
Please Joe, don't try to reserect the Bush brand. best foreign policy expert, he dragged us into the first Iraq war. With set the stage for his son's disaster. Who was the VP during Iran-contra? bush the elder was like Romney, an out of touch 1%. shame on you Joe.
I was hoping Joe named his Teddy Awards after the Teddy's from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," oh well. I wouldn't leap to give Bush Sr. any awards, but it says volumes how far the Republicans have fallen, from Bush Sr. to Bush Jr., from Bob Dole to Mitch McConnell, let alone the Tea Party. Maybe in 2014 Ashley Judd really will move back to Kentucky, run against McConnell, and kick his (rear end).
Not a bad list but I would definitely have withheld any awards for Lieberman. "Not being a d!ck for a change" isn't a sufficiently high bar for accolades.
All males? No Elizabeth Warrens? Taking on the big banks isn't worthy of a Teddy? Lieberman get's one? Bush jr gets one? So the damage done can be balanced by a slender thread of things done right? Where's Newt? He occasional does the right thing.
Joe - OT, but I wanted to respond to your Morning Joe conversation about the Newtown situation, specifically your comment that once disturbed young people become older than 18 there's very little parents can do. The truth is, it's nearly as difficult when kids are younger than 18.
I used to be a counselor on a hotline assisting parents, and sometimes parents would call with an out of control teen, who had threatened to claim they were being abused if their parents called the police or otherwise sought to deal with the situation. This has an immediate chilling effect on the parents, as designed. They know that at the least their child may be temporarily taken away while they are investigated for abuse. Not all teens do this of course, because many don't want to be separated from their parents. But many of the angriest, most manipulative, most socially compromised or disturbed, understand that this threat gives them the upper hand.
"I’ll award a Teddy instead to former governor Jeb Bush, who said in a June speech that neither his father George H.W. Bush nor Ronald Reagan, “based on [their] record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground” with Democrats, would have been very comfortable in today’s Republican Party."
And that is the whole crux of the current situation in the republican party. The Tea Party loves the idea of Ronald Reagan, but Reagan would be primaried in a heartbeat by the TP as a RINO. The TP is the horcrux in the republican party now; a heartless, soul-less abomination created for power.
nfl, the Schiavo fiasco created some long lasting hard feelings here at our house. My wife and I both have living wills and neither of us want to be kept alive by artificial means. The MIL says she'd take me to court if my wife was in a coma and I tried to have her life support disconnected. She thinks God will restore her...even if it took decades. It doesn't matter to her what her daughter wants. It's what she wants that's important. It had my wife upset for weeks. I finally told them both that if the situation ever arose, I'd take the MIL out myself to settle it. God's will be done.
All Jed did well was manage four hurricanes in a row. JK conveniently forgot about the Schiavo fiasco. But yeh, Jed probably can't run for prez now since bro'man took his birthright--er, spot.
Ah, the Gorton's Fisherman. Hope you caught Ralph Macchio--er, Rachel Maddow's piece on how Bork upheld a company's right to sterilize wimmen.
@sacredh You fire Archibald Cox and you get a nomination to the Supreme Court. Give him a Teddy - he has an occasional profile in courage.
Link to Bork's death:
I nominate the Tea Party. They had the courage to trash their party just because they felt like it:
@sacredh Wow. 2 days and 15 comments for Joe's annual, highly-anticipated "Teddy Awards".
I'm left trying to decide whether Joe should threaten to leave TIME if his comment count doesn't go up, or TIME threatening to fire Joe is his comment count doesn't go up...
