This bruising spot released by the Romney campaign in June was a play on one of Obama’s best ads from 2008. The original attacked then-Republican nominee John McCain for saying, “the fundamentals of the economy are strong” in the midst of the financial crisis. Romney’s version used an identical format to pillory Obama after he said, “the private sector is doing fine” in response to a weak jobs report. The president was trying to make the point that government job losses had been a drag on private sector gains, but the ad’s message was much clearer. “How can President Obama fix our economy,” the spot asked, “if he doesn’t understand it’s broken?”
