Obama’s Re-Election Inspires Southern Secessionists

While there's no chance that the spate of secessionist rhetoric will dissolve the union, there is a seamy aspect to the surge in petitions. Little concrete information is known about most of the signatories, and southern nationalists have rallied around the idea.

If you’re unhappy that Barack Obama was re-elected President last week, there’s always secession. At least that’s the solution advocated by the nearly 100,000 Texans who have signed a petition for secession first posted on the White House website Nov. 9. And they’re not alone. Since Obama won a second term, Americans from all 50 states have submitted similar secession petitions, each containing some version of this request: “Peacefully grant the State of __________ to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.”

This new secessionist movement first got rolling in Louisiana, where Obama opponents submitted a petition to secede just hours after the President was declared the victor of a hard-fought presidential election. Similar petitions soon spread nationwide, boosted by the White House’s promise to review any petition submitted on its “We the People” site that garners more than 25,000 signatures. Sometimes such civic activism spurs change, such as when an Ale to the Chief petition prompted the White House to release its beer recipe earlier this summer. But beer-brewing and union-dissolving are not quite on the same scale, and for obvious reasons, secession is not a viable prospect — not least because the U.S. made unilateral secession illegal after the Civil War.

In a sense, the secessionist bandwagon is just comic relief — the despondent conservative’s answer to liberals who threatened to move to Canada when George W. Bush won a second term. Southern Republican governors like Texas’s Rick Perry — who back in 2009 appeared to float secession as a real recourse to federal interference — and Alabama’s Robert Benchley have flatly rejected the idea.

But there is a seamy aspect to the surge in petitions as well. Little concrete information is known about most of the signatories. Their names have not been verified, and anyone can sign as many petitions as they like. Southern nationalists have rallied around the idea, and many may consider it a last-ditch effort to preserve the notion of white supremacy in the U.S. rather than a post-election joke.

“The election results were really great for our cause,” says Michael Cushman, 36, an advocate of secession and founder of the Southern Nationalist Network. “I think it was better that Obama won because it has revived a lot interest in secession in the South because he is very unpopular here.” Cushman, who works as an industrial worker in Aiken County, S.C, heard about the petitions on the White House site via social media. Unhappy with Obamacare and unemployment rates, Cushman says he is using this opportunity to work “nonstop” this week to urge his followers to drum up support for the secession petitions.

Counter petitions are taking the debacle to the other extreme. A petition to“Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America” has over 15,000 signatures, and “Strip the Citizenship from Everyone who Signed a Petition to Secede and Exile Them” has nearly 10,000. You know the idea has probably gone far enough when the White House had to remove the petition titled “Peacefully Grant the State of Herp-a-Derp to Withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW Government” for violating the site’s terms of participation. The White House has yet to say how it will respond to the petition wave. Between the lingering controversy over the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, a CIA “Love Pentagon,” and a fast-approaching fiscal cliff, it’s fair to say that the President has other items on his agenda.

Truth of the matter is without the funds from the South the North would be lucky to make it through the winter. So, you can call us ignorant and inbred but truth of the matter is without the South the North would be doomed. Lincoln knew without cotton bills they were screwed and like it or not the Norths depending on the money from the South hasn't changed. Cant imaging the self loathing you people must feel looking in the mirror knowing that you are so dependent on such an inbred and ignorant people.....funny really..it used to anger me (the stereotype of the uneducated) that we in the South are all still riding around on horses with a wad of chewing tobacco in our mouth, Grandpappies double barrel shotgun thrown across our lap so we can shoot a squirrel if we see one on the way home to bed down with Sis, but now it just makes me chuckle at how ignorant and clueless those people are. Ignorant of the agriculture, oil refining, energy producing..etc., most of which is so technical that your wee brains would implode trying to figure it out.

The government is smart enough to realize their demise should the South secede, that's why peaceful secession in reality will probably never happen

Peaceful, peaceful, what are you talking about? To what advantage is any secession? First of all any state would soon fail. The Government of the United States eather owns out right or pay's someone  to manage 50% of all the land in the Country. They own all the Gold reserves. They send out billions of federal pension checks to mostly ( retired military.) Also the President must up- hold the constitution. Let me tell you this President will. But all that nonsence aside they would be traitors! They would be people with out a country! They could just as well go to Arlington National Cemetery and p--- on the graves of the men and women that are resting in peace there! In my opinion any one even talking about secession should spend some time in the Federal penitentiary in Levenworth Kansas! I would like that.If you don't like the Government, change it. But you do that voting. Run for office. If you do not win that just means you stink and you are a loser.

These anti-southern, anti-white extremists have no idea about that of which they speak.Really, they don't.That's fine with me, I couldn't care less, our secession is in progress and there's nothing these haters can do to stop it.

Such hate filled comments.  Why do you wish to be in a political union with us "right-wing inbred rednecks" as you call us if you hate us so much?  Why would I want to stay in a political union with such hate-filled people such as yourselves? If you hate secession so much I suggest you stop celebrating the Fourth of July.

Hey, lets face it, the rednecks want to secede because of the chance that some day they may legally fornicate with their sister in a outhouse.

These Civil-War era extremists are the culmination of the ultra right beliefs and highly distorted opinion  that they are right and the vast majority of Americans are wrong.  They are being crowded into a corner and are lashing out with anger.  They learned, along with the GOP, that hate, exclusion, racism and distaste for their own government is not shared by the majority and that they will continue to lose influence.  It's like going back to the 1860's again, but this time they are in a very small but vocal minority.  But, they are Americans and we should all try to help them into the 21st century and a more reasonable set of beliefs.  That may take anothe generation.

INSTEAD OF SECEDE  ......  IMPEACH !!

Nixon succumbed to Watergate, Obama will to Benghazigate --In the Watergate nobody DIED. 4 americans were killed in Benghazi after --immediate help was denied , 3 TIMES. TO THEM by Obama and his administration. --THIS IS A PROVEN FACT ! ---Breaking news: There was a live feed into the White House during the hours-long siege of theEmbassy, murder of the Ambassador and mortar attack on the SEALs.This Administration opted to do nothing: No air support, no reinforcement of the embassy, no plan toprotect the SEALs who had the targets in their sites, nothing. They sat there and refused to lift a finger as these brave souls were murdered. ---The people asking for Obama's impeachment are in the right track. THERE IS
IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE and Obama has been FOUND OUT ! ---He and his administration are lying criminals ! -- Traitors and cover-uppers !

Either he lied (why?) or we are living through one of the truly greatest cover-ups/ fraud of our time.http://tinyurl.com/94opybf

I do believe we resolved the question of whether or not states are allowed to leave the Union about 150 years ago.  If I remember my history, somebody got an old fashion butt whoopin' as part of the lesson.

I said we should secede during Bush as well..I voted Obama in 2008, its a puppet government ran by lobbyist/corporations. Like I said, it took the states to legalize weed, and to get rid of the laws and goes against the Federal Government...it's much easier to control and vote for a smaller state government then it is to worry about the State and Federal government...

AndrewRusher
AndrewRusher

The reporter is ignorant. People don't realize Republicans and Democrats have conservative and liberal views. If you understand the language we have written, and how we were founded, and what conservatism is, you'd realize that Conservative views would really be for gay rights because conservatives believe we should follow the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. Which every civil right movements has used the basis of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness as the reason they deserved their rights, therefor it would be conservative to agree with gay rights. It's liberal to want to go to war, because it goes against the constitution.Your all used to the modern distorted definitions of liberal and conservative.States should secede. The Federal Government is corrupt. Look at Washington and Colorado, it took the STATES to decide the legalize weed. It's the Federal Government and all the lobbying, and the Federal Reserve private banking cartel that is ruining our nation. We should peacefully secede, or revolt and re-establish an entirely new government.BUT NOW IS THE TIME TO REVOLT OR SECEDE! We can no longer allow the Federal Government to take away our freedoms and money through indentured servitude to the banks!I'm a FORMER OBAMA voter in 2008, and am NO PARTY...but after looking at the facts about both parties and the politicians within them, I've realized the two parties are the same, they just fight over civil liberties which both are right and wrong about some, but both agree on the GREEDY economic policies we are following now, which allow bailouts so companies don't have to increase their companies wages to keep things going...

@AndrewRusher

Here's your confusion: the Constitution was actually an extremely liberal document for its time.  You falsely define conservatism as sticking up for the Constitution but it was conservatives who fought against the constitution, it was conservatives who wanted to conserve England's power over England, hence the word.  Liberals were the ones who wrote the Constitution and were the ones who were fighting for liberty, hence the word.

Modern-day conservatives are fighting to conserve their power, while modern day liberals are fighting for the liberty of the ordinary person.  That is and always has been the dynamic; conservatives just try to muddy the waters and confuse people with lies like 'we believe in the constitution and the spirit in which it was written'.  BS--the only thing conservatives believe is that they have a God-given right to their privilege and power over regular people and they are willing to do whatever it takes to conserve that power.

@DruiBelerle Please don't. We have enough idiots here already.

And I have news for you, Texas ain't goin' anywhere. We love our federal money as much as the next state, and we need the federal government as much as the next. How does Texas propose to secure its incredibly long border with Mexico without the feds? Without the border patrol, drones, the military – all federal? Who secures the Houston Ship Channel? What happens to all the military bases in Texas? The Johnson Space Center? What about Social Security? Medicare? If Texas leaves, those federal benefits go away. You think Texas is gonna pay them? What about all that federal money that goes to our colleges and universities? Our hospitals? When fires, tornadoes and hurricanes hit, is Texas gonna foot the whole bill for damages herself? Please. And should Texas secede, watch the many businesses that have moved here just pull up stakes and go, including the blessed oil companies, who will lose all their federal subsidies if they stay.

And as far as the Alamo, a good number of he men who fought there were fighting with the understanding that Texas would eventually join the Union. The 10 years that Texas spent as an independent republic were horrible. No money in the state coffers, a barely functioning government, a currency that was worth nothing and no way to defend ourselves from any threats.

Even Rick Perry has had the (rare) good sense to back off of any secession talk. It's an idea even too idiotic for him.

I am not concerned about Flags. Fly what ever you want. Burn what ever one you want as long as it is not mine. This is a group of numb-skulls that think they are being picked on. Not being able to do just as they please. As I have said they are the worst of America. They think there state is the country. So they  don't want a country, we don't like this country, we don't like the President of the United States, there for we want out. In my book there could be nothing as low as a traitor to his country. As I said and i stand by it. They are much worse then Jane Fonda. Besides she is better looking then the traitors.

@nhautamaki @AndrewRusher Terms like "conservative" and "liberal" really do not apply when talking about the Constitution.

Yes, the Constitution and the entire American experiment were "liberal" for the late 18th century, in that to be conservative in those days mean to support the Old Regime of an absolute monarchy, a single national church, and a hereditary aristocracy.

In that sense, both liberals AND conservatives today would be liberals in the 18th century.

However, in many ways the constitution was a more conservative document, especially when compared to the Declaration of Independence and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. It was a document that reflected the suspicion of democracy and the people held by the early framers. Only 1/2 of one branch of the three branches of government was selected through popular election. Also, the original document did not contain a Bill of Rights. It also gave far more power to the federal government and the executive branch than the Articles of Confederation, the previous document that organized our government.

Terms like liberal and conservative are relative and are so weighted down with baggage today that they obscure, rather than illuminate, meaning.

@Marky_D_Sodd @AndrewRusher Why? So Cartels can continue having power over Mexico? So more bodies can be hung from the street overpasses? So that more people can have their faces cut off and sewn onto a soccer ball and kicked into a field where children were watching? You think we shouldn't legalize weed when it is less dangerous then alcohol and all alcohol prohibition did was create the Mafia?Even Albert Einstein was against prohibition....and said that was our biggest mistake to civil liberties..

Tell me how they work? They spend most of their time campaigning using LOBBYIST funds to win the next election so they can get their checks..it's a pyramid scheme. You realize every politician is breaking the law? NO YOU DON'T because they brainwashed you to think they can break the constitution and bill of rights for themselves. If you are Republican or Democrat then your ignorant. I was ignorant at one point. I didn't study before voting Obama in 2008, but now I am educated on how the economy is running, and knew how it should work prior, and we are creating endless debt.We are in endless wars on terror that started with Jews and Arabs over Jerusalem which both of them were attacking back and forth, but we sided with Israel even though they declared Israel a state, when it was divided up in half for Arabs and Jews and was supposed to have an international city. Instead the UN pulled out and the Jews took over. The lobbyists see profit from these wars so help them out and continue putting the US citizens in debt to bankers and defense contractors...You think PRINTING helps? 1$ out of 100$ is 1% while 1$ out of 200$ is .5% the more money you add, the less value the dollar has, and prices rise. The money continues going back into the hands of the rich because they know the Federal Government will print more and more money so they don't have to give up their profits and have to stop living extravagant lives and get rid of their 5+ houses and go down to 1 or 2 houses instead...no they want to be greedy and our politicians support it...

AndrewRusher
AndrewRusher

@rutoft64 They get LOBBIED, Lobbying=Bribery by definition. It's ILLEGAL under the constitution and OBAMA is a CONSTITUTIONAL LAWYER and takes lobbyist money...even tho he was against it and said it was illegal when he was first running as well.I voted Obama, he's a liar, just like Romney was, and every other politician which is why I didn't vote for either candidate

Think we're being picked on? We're the one group in the united states that it's considered o.k. to throw all kinds of bigotry and stereotypes at. I tried making a point of those stereotypes thrown at us earlier but the post got blocked.

Scroll down to the comments on the page I'm linking, I took the liberty of putting my original post to you on there with your handle on it so you can easily find it, and then tell me why any of us SHOULD want ourselves or our people to be a part of this country. Keep in mind that you are arguing with someone that was a secessionist before the election so you may need to change your deluded rhetoric about it being over the election because many of us are of this stance regardless of which moronic party gets elected. It's amazing, you people hate us and the fact that we exist and yet if we try to break away you are the first to attack us for it when you should be welcoming it. You don't have to deal with us "rednecks" being a part of your country and we don't have to suffer the insult of calling you our countrymen as you continually stereotype us while claiming to be againstdoing that

@Marky_D_Sodd @AndrewRusher Actually, considering how far gone the united states is and the fact that nobody will be allowed to leave peacefully(anyone that tries will be murdered and then demonized in order to be made an example of) this may be the perfect time to start lighting up and just say "f*** it". The sad thing is that this is the way it is regardless of which party wins in an election and most of you people have your heads wedged too firmly up the posterior of one of these parties to ever figure it out or admit it out of foolish personal pride as though to admit it would be a slight against yourselves.

My family has been here for generations. They have share-cropped, picked cotton and "lived off the land." And you know what? they worked their fingers to the bone to make sure future generations didn't have to do that. Because it sucked.

And, yes, "the original Texas" had it every bit as hard as I said. Try cracking a history book sometime, or take a Texas history course. You know, when you beg enough gas money to come down here and realize this state doesn't care spit for you.
