Obama’s Re-Election Inspires Southern Secessionists

While there's no chance that the spate of secessionist rhetoric will dissolve the union, there is a seamy aspect to the surge in petitions. Little concrete information is known about most of the signatories, and southern nationalists have rallied around the idea.

If you’re unhappy that Barack Obama was re-elected President last week, there’s always secession. At least that’s the solution advocated by the nearly 100,000 Texans who have signed a petition for secession first posted on the White House website Nov. 9. And they’re not alone. Since Obama won a second term, Americans from all 50 states have submitted similar secession petitions, each containing some version of this request: “Peacefully grant the State of __________ to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.”

This new secessionist movement first got rolling in Louisiana, where Obama opponents submitted a petition to secede just hours after the President was declared the victor of a hard-fought presidential election. Similar petitions soon spread nationwide, boosted by the White House’s promise to review any petition submitted on its “We the People” site that garners more than 25,000 signatures. Sometimes such civic activism spurs change, such as when an Ale to the Chief petition prompted the White House to release its beer recipe earlier this summer. But beer-brewing and union-dissolving are not quite on the same scale, and for obvious reasons, secession is not a viable prospect — not least because the U.S. made unilateral secession illegal after the Civil War.

In a sense, the secessionist bandwagon is just comic relief — the despondent conservative’s answer to liberals who threatened to move to Canada when George W. Bush won a second term. Southern Republican governors like Texas’s Rick Perry — who back in 2009 appeared to float secession as a real recourse to federal interference — and Alabama’s Robert Benchley have flatly rejected the idea.

But there is a seamy aspect to the surge in petitions as well. Little concrete information is known about most of the signatories. Their names have not been verified, and anyone can sign as many petitions as they like. Southern nationalists have rallied around the idea, and many may consider it a last-ditch effort to preserve the notion of white supremacy in the U.S. rather than a post-election joke.

“The election results were really great for our cause,” says Michael Cushman, 36, an advocate of secession and founder of the Southern Nationalist Network. “I think it was better that Obama won because it has revived a lot interest in secession in the South because he is very unpopular here.” Cushman, who works as an industrial worker in Aiken County, S.C, heard about the petitions on the White House site via social media. Unhappy with Obamacare and unemployment rates, Cushman says he is using this opportunity to work “nonstop” this week to urge his followers to drum up support for the secession petitions.

Counter petitions are taking the debacle to the other extreme. A petition to“Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America” has over 15,000 signatures, and “Strip the Citizenship from Everyone who Signed a Petition to Secede and Exile Them” has nearly 10,000. You know the idea has probably gone far enough when the White House had to remove the petition titled “Peacefully Grant the State of Herp-a-Derp to Withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW Government” for violating the site’s terms of participation. The White House has yet to say how it will respond to the petition wave. Between the lingering controversy over the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, a CIA “Love Pentagon,” and a fast-approaching fiscal cliff, it’s fair to say that the President has other items on his agenda.

Truth of the matter is without the funds from the South the North would be lucky to make it through the winter. So, you can call us ignorant and inbred but truth of the matter is without the South the North would be doomed. Lincoln knew without cotton bills they were screwed and like it or not the Norths depending on the money from the South hasn't changed. Cant imaging the self loathing you people must feel looking in the mirror knowing that you are so dependent on such an inbred and ignorant people.....funny really..it used to anger me (the stereotype of the uneducated) that we in the South are all still riding around on horses with a wad of chewing tobacco in our mouth, Grandpappies double barrel shotgun thrown across our lap so we can shoot a squirrel if we see one on the way home to bed down with Sis, but now it just makes me chuckle at how ignorant and clueless those people are. Ignorant of the agriculture, oil refining, energy producing..etc., most of which is so technical that your wee brains would implode trying to figure it out.

The government is smart enough to realize their demise should the South secede, that's why peaceful secession in reality will probably never happen

Peaceful, peaceful, what are you talking about? To what advantage is any secession? First of all any state would soon fail. The Government of the United States eather owns out right or pay's someone  to manage 50% of all the land in the Country. They own all the Gold reserves. They send out billions of federal pension checks to mostly ( retired military.) Also the President must up- hold the constitution. Let me tell you this President will. But all that nonsence aside they would be traitors! They would be people with out a country! They could just as well go to Arlington National Cemetery and p--- on the graves of the men and women that are resting in peace there! In my opinion any one even talking about secession should spend some time in the Federal penitentiary in Levenworth Kansas! I would like that.If you don't like the Government, change it. But you do that voting. Run for office. If you do not win that just means you stink and you are a loser.

These anti-southern, anti-white extremists have no idea about that of which they speak.Really, they don't.That's fine with me, I couldn't care less, our secession is in progress and there's nothing these haters can do to stop it.

Such hate filled comments.  Why do you wish to be in a political union with us "right-wing inbred rednecks" as you call us if you hate us so much?  Why would I want to stay in a political union with such hate-filled people such as yourselves? If you hate secession so much I suggest you stop celebrating the Fourth of July.

Hey, lets face it, the rednecks want to secede because of the chance that some day they may legally fornicate with their sister in a outhouse.

These Civil-War era extremists are the culmination of the ultra right beliefs and highly distorted opinion  that they are right and the vast majority of Americans are wrong.  They are being crowded into a corner and are lashing out with anger.  They learned, along with the GOP, that hate, exclusion, racism and distaste for their own government is not shared by the majority and that they will continue to lose influence.  It's like going back to the 1860's again, but this time they are in a very small but vocal minority.  But, they are Americans and we should all try to help them into the 21st century and a more reasonable set of beliefs.  That may take anothe generation.

INSTEAD OF SECEDE  ......  IMPEACH !!

Nixon succumbed to Watergate, Obama will to Benghazigate --In the Watergate nobody DIED. 4 americans were killed in Benghazi after --immediate help was denied , 3 TIMES. TO THEM by Obama and his administration. --THIS IS A PROVEN FACT ! ---Breaking news: There was a live feed into the White House during the hours-long siege of theEmbassy, murder of the Ambassador and mortar attack on the SEALs.This Administration opted to do nothing: No air support, no reinforcement of the embassy, no plan toprotect the SEALs who had the targets in their sites, nothing. They sat there and refused to lift a finger as these brave souls were murdered. ---The people asking for Obama's impeachment are in the right track. THERE IS
IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE and Obama has been FOUND OUT ! ---He and his administration are lying criminals ! -- Traitors and cover-uppers !

Either he lied (why?) or we are living through one of the truly greatest cover-ups/ fraud of our time.http://tinyurl.com/94opybf

I do believe we resolved the question of whether or not states are allowed to leave the Union about 150 years ago.  If I remember my history, somebody got an old fashion butt whoopin' as part of the lesson.

I said we should secede during Bush as well..I voted Obama in 2008, its a puppet government ran by lobbyist/corporations. Like I said, it took the states to legalize weed, and to get rid of the laws and goes against the Federal Government...it's much easier to control and vote for a smaller state government then it is to worry about the State and Federal government...

AndrewRusher
AndrewRusher

The reporter is ignorant. People don't realize Republicans and Democrats have conservative and liberal views. If you understand the language we have written, and how we were founded, and what conservatism is, you'd realize that Conservative views would really be for gay rights because conservatives believe we should follow the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. Which every civil right movements has used the basis of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness as the reason they deserved their rights, therefor it would be conservative to agree with gay rights. It's liberal to want to go to war, because it goes against the constitution.Your all used to the modern distorted definitions of liberal and conservative.States should secede. The Federal Government is corrupt. Look at Washington and Colorado, it took the STATES to decide the legalize weed. It's the Federal Government and all the lobbying, and the Federal Reserve private banking cartel that is ruining our nation. We should peacefully secede, or revolt and re-establish an entirely new government.BUT NOW IS THE TIME TO REVOLT OR SECEDE! We can no longer allow the Federal Government to take away our freedoms and money through indentured servitude to the banks!I'm a FORMER OBAMA voter in 2008, and am NO PARTY...but after looking at the facts about both parties and the politicians within them, I've realized the two parties are the same, they just fight over civil liberties which both are right and wrong about some, but both agree on the GREEDY economic policies we are following now, which allow bailouts so companies don't have to increase their companies wages to keep things going...

You know all this is racist. You would think people would have more brains then this. These are the same people that go around telling how patriotic they are. Jane Fonda was a more patriotic then this bunch.of moron clowns.  Get all there names and post them on the net. Then we can see who the enemies of the United States America. We had a war that took thousands of lives on just this action. No it is not a joke. They are 10 times more dangerous then the Taliban, al-Qaeda, Iran, and the old USSR. I have always said that the right wing in America is who we must look out for. I think it must be very sad for the parents of the young men and woman who given there lives for there country. Now see morons saying we went out of this great land just because they lost a election. They were Americas best. These people are Americas worst!!!

Most politicians come from Texas, especially republicans, they tend todiffer from this point of view. Granted, Texas is a big state, but10,000 people don't decide to be different country, it's too less thanSan Antonio Spurs's stadium attendance..  Utterly poor effort..IMHO.it's United States of America. Not Divided States of America..  If Obamawins, swallows it and wait for next term, he wasn't doing really bad, even Mitt Romney won, the situation will be same.

I think that we are missing an obvious point. There have always been differences of ideas since The Wigs and The Federalist and always will be. That is the nature of man. I think the point is that it should not be wholly one way or the other. We need policies that take into account and respect both views. COMPROMISE and come up with less meddling, more independence of states; yet care and affordability of basic needs for our citizens. Yelling louder "I am right" does not make either side RIGHT. Name calling and accusations don't really address issues and only allow the writer to feel good about themselves. No one else is nearly as impressed.

California gets less than 70 cents on the dollar from the Federal Government and most of the money goes to the Red states which are poorer and have their hands out. Those are the states most opposed to Obamacare, Medicare Social Security and other federal programs. Or as MItt Romney says take away FEMA and Big Bird. Californians don't whine about this but realize that many states need a helping hand. What we do mind is the nasty baloney from those states on the dole about federal aid. If it is taken away some of those states will sink into the sea. It is hard to fathom the thinking or lack thereof from people who object to federal programs and then turn around and say "leave my Medicare alone". What planet are they on? Dissociative thinking is a mark of a diseased brain. It would seem that Abbys brain has been used for far too many transplants... You know who you are (Abby Normal). So let's stop the whining and get on with fixing things to make them work. Obamacare will prove to be as important ultimately as Medicare as we move from a society where health care is a privilege to a right. Without that right it is impossible to have life liberty and the pursuit of happiness as enshrined in our Constitution. And it can hlep to significantly lower health care costs over time essential for providing affordable health care in this millenium.

Evidently all these secessionist nitwits are not familiar with American History.  They, no doubt, would say the Civil War was fought over slavery.

It was not.  Slavery was abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation, and later made a preventative provision of the Constitution in the 13th Amendment.

The Civil War was about Secession.  Undoubtedly the South, in seceding, thought they would be then be free to continue slavery.  But the War resulted when the South separated itself from the Union, elected its own governing body, issued its own currency, designed its own flag, and declared itself a nation in its own right.  The "North" said 'you can't do that'; the "South" said 'try and stop us'.  The rest is history.

At the time, it was, arguably, a state's right to separate itself from the Union.  That is no longer true.  While it would be to EVERYONE's advantage (in my opinion) if Texas separated itself, and for that matter slid into the Gulf of Mexico, it ain't gonna happen.

I would be willing to give the Teabaggers Alaska if they ALL agreed to move there.  Plenty of oil (which they like) and plenty of hunting (which they also like).  They can hook up their trailers to their pickup trucks and leave in one giant caravan (sorry, Canada).

There's a part of me that says "let 'em go".  Generally speaking (Texas being the big exception), they're poorer, less educated, more federally sustained, and more 1950's era states.  So that part of me says "Let 'em go, let Randian philosophy have her home, let it collapse around them while the rest of us push forward and let them come crawling back."

Isn't it all interesting. Apply these comments to our forefathers. Either they were idiots who owed England large amounts of money to leave or they were patriotic. Unless we are rewriting history here, I believe it has been established they were patriotic. On which side would you have been in 1776? Should we secede just because our candidate did not win. NO. But if our country has not been listening to ("we the people" the government) for years, then maybe it is time to do something drastic to regain our rights. I have not heard anything about race or derogatory comments from anyone but those of the opposite opinion. It may just be about dissatisfaction with our leaders. Imagine, something so simple and not evil.

Americans have been fuelling other wars all around the world, and playing their own interest card in people's uprising. Who made Americans the final decision makers for our world??!! They invade, destroy, and do whatever they wanne do anywhere, BUT NO MORE! Reality check, it's a balanced world now, and who cares about America?! Who cares if they go into a civil war!? They ramrodded Somalia, Libya, Iraq and many more..just for their own interest!!! They claim slavery is abloished in America, I have always seen a colored guy working like 150% when a white American works 50%! Lincoln 'abloished slavery' for defeating Southerners, black and colored people are still in modern day slavery!!! And they call it the 'melting pot', really?!?!? I have never seen people not in touch to each other like in America, they're living in their own pots, and there they go, can't wait to see some anarchy and messy civil wars in America. Oh that 'Shining City on a Hill', how allegorical!? There is a NEW ORDER in today's world, not an American order, not anymore!

can't wait to see USA turn into US and A, and they should spend all their military into their own war rather than killing people in other continents, Borat Sagdeyev, your dream comes true! America can no more afford to stay as a super power, it has already been overwhelmed by the Wheels of Time! Outpaced! The world is different today, people whether in a small village in Africa or on an island in Tuvalu, have emerged as super-powers. The American West has been replaced by the Emerging Rest, no more polarity, and war-mongering American attitude. We are witnessing a better world, and a more peaceful and brighter one, and a universal one! Having lived in America for long, I have seen how narrowened their attitude is, their intellect is, and how hyperlocal and short their snap of memory is.

These people can leave the Union if they want. But they are not getting a state for free. Especially since they did nothing to earn that state except either moving into it or being dropped from between their mother's legs.
