Not much happening on today’s Sunday talk shows. Lots of debate spinning, of course — the first debate is always good for challengers, we’re told. (It wasn’t in 1996, when Bob Dole debated Bill Clinton — but hey, that was Clinton.) And lots of handwringing over the Obama Administration’s reputed obfuscation of the terrorist attack on Sept. 11 in Libya. (Let’s stipulate that the Administration could have been more forthcoming, more quickly — but the attack occurred under the camouflage of a rash of Salafi riots through the region; it was easy to mistake it, at first, for more of the same. And the security failure in Libya, while glaring, should be seen in the context of Obama’s overall successes in taking the fight to al-Qaeda.) And then there was Paul Ryan on Fox News this morning, failing spectacularly to explain how Mitt Romney’s widely discredited tax cut plan will work. He simply refused to answer Chris Wallace’s question about how much of a budget hole Romney’s 20% cuts would create and, as always, failed to tell us how Romney would fill that hole. He insisted he had lots of specifics, though. I suspect Romney will have to do a lot better than that on Wednesday night.
Your times with David, Sam, Cokie, then George were de rigueur for any budding, young politico, back in the day. That was then, this is now. There is more at play than mere national guilt about slavery and all its chains that bond us to our current President. Much more. Women's rights, Gay's rights, the rights of the 47% to name a few. Our country has inextricably moved away from the era you grew up and came of age in: the era when we all Liked Ike, and Father Did Know Best. No George, today's rapidly changing and shrinking global society demands so much more that what Mitt Romney can deliver with his very narrow, and limited world view. Indeed, Romney is the very antithesis of what America needs now: a Global Leader. There is only one clear choice this election cycle. We must and we will elect the Most Qualified President for Our Times.
May I suggest a drinking game based on how many times Romney stutters, "I, I, I'.... ? Buy stock in little shot glasses and cheap tequila.
Too bad no other third party candidates are going to be invited; it would not only quadruple the ratings, it would actually be, you know, good for democracy and the right thing to do.
Well, it appears that after a brief dip in his upward trajectory, Obama is back on the positive curve (as reported by the highly-respected Nate Silver). Accordingly, Nate's research gives Obama about an 85% chance of re-election, which is up a couple of points since last week. To put that "couple of points" into bleak-perspective for Ramp;R, they have seen their chances of election drop by 10-20% in a week where they didn't do too badly in the news (they didn't make any huge gaffes). If this is how it goes on a good week...yikes.
My guess is that Obama goes into full "prevent defense" (as previewed by his refusal to meet Bibi at the UN). With Team-Obama playing cautious, Ramp;R will need to start throwing "Hail Mary's"...essentially attacking on all fronts and throwing caution to the wind. All the ever-patient Team-Obama needs to do is wait for Romney to make one-more critical "flip" when he should have "flopped", and in goes the knife. My guess is that it happens on Wednesday, and by Friday Mitt will be done.
Think about what you will do after the polls, when Rmoney goes back to one of his "home ' states, sport. Not sure many folks have use for a bitter, crotchety and bigoted old man like yourself.
Pick any poll, Paul (even Fox's). They all look more-or-less the same (discounting the ones that arbitrarily add 10-20% to Romney due to phantom bias). Mitt's close in the popular polling, but he's going to lose big in the electoral college. You know it's about over when the Bill O'Reilley starts tempering his dog whistling so he won't look like his Harvard Master's in Public Policy came from a cereal box when the whole thing is done.
I read a telling article this morning from The Atlantic where Romney (after losing to Ted Kennedy in '94) said he knew that he was going to get beat, but he was just happy that he made Ted mortgage his house in order to win. So Mitt's no dummy: He knows that he's cooked unless some love-child with Obama's face comes forward. As long as the RNC keeps Mitt, Inc. out of the red on the campaign, he's going to play the losing hand to the end.
The GOP legislation awaiting Romney's signature isn't simply a return to the era of George W. Bush. From abortion rights and gun laws to tax giveaways and energy policy, it's far worse. Measures that have already sailed through the Republican House would roll back clean-air protections, gut both Medicare and Medicaid, lavish trillions in tax cuts on billionaires while raising taxes on the poor, and slash everything from college aid to veteran benefits. In fact, the tenets of Ryan Republicanism are so extreme that they even offend the pioneers of trickle-down economics. "Ryan takes out the ax and goes after programs for the poor – which is the last thing you ought to cut," says David Stockman, who served as Ronald Reagan's budget director. "It's ideology run amok."

Persnickety Romney FAILED to learn the precept of "noblesse oblige" while DRAFT DODGING in France. Every REALISTIC Repub concedes DEFEAT.
Only President Obama and the DEMOCRATS PROTECT the MIDDLE CLASS.
Get the VOTE OUT! GO BIG! VOTE THE DEMOCRATIC TICKET!
Ryan never has the time he needs to run the numbers. But the inside the beltway media tells me he is a wonk. A budget wonk that never has time to run numbers.
The President is on the road to a land slide not because of any thing he has done but because of what the Republicans have not and cannot say...
I checked Nate when I got home.
Nov. 6th Forecast:
Obama: 85.1% Highest yet.
Romney: 14.9% Lowest yet.
Obama: 98.1% Wow.
Romney: 1.9% Wow.
The greatest part of this Romney loss(and he will lose, the only question is how badly) is how it will completely shred Paul Ryan's standing as a national figure and as a fiscal conservative. He's a fraud, always has been and it's finally being revealed for everyone to see. Michael Grunwald has been destroying him here for a while now and now everyone gets to see why.
How many "restarts" is this for Willard now?
I doubt in the end the debates will have much of an impact. There aren't that many undecideds left. The debates will probably serve to confirm people's decision to vote for either the President or the Governor. Romney will not do so well and the President will not do so poorly to change many minds. I think these debates are the most over hyped and least impactful in memory
"He simply refused to answer Chris Wallace’s question about how much of a budget hole Romney’s 20% cuts would create and, as always, failed to tell us how Romney would fill that hole."
It's beyond comical the excuses they're creating to not answer that question. I loved the part of the interview when Ryan said the Tax Policy Center's analysis of their plan had been discredited but then refused to say why is was inaccurate. Romney wants people to stop asking about Bain or his income tax returns? fine, then answer the substantive questions that are being put to you. Refuse to answer those? Fine, but stop claiming that your campaign is about the issues. So far it hasn't been about anything but "Obama bad" but not so bad that you can point to anything but a mediocre jobs number and nothing else as best I can tell.
Everybody needs to read this: Link...socialism must be destroyed and by socialism I mean things like social security, medicare...
Ryan at his best!
Jeebus. The man is soulless.
I grew up reading Ayn Rand and it taught me quite a bit about who I am and what my value systems are, and what my beliefs are.
That says it all. It's also completely incompatible with the Catholicism he claims as his faith. And if he thinks charities are going to be able to catch everyone once he rips the safety net out from under them, he needs to go talk to his local Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul volunteers.
Obama leads Romney among Catholics. Ryan's vision is outside the Roman Catholic vision of justice.
"In an earlier earlier post, you were giddy over a reported tie between Obama and Romney in the Rasmussen tracking poll."
I never get giddy over polls. Polls are a useful tool when they are not being manipulated for partisan reasons.
You only find polls useful when they show Romney in the lead. Otherwise they're "skewed" and "oversample Democrats".
"I find that it is a Greek myth, much as your right wing ideology and beliefs are."
Actually, Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama has no equal in the art of myth making, but of course he has his Hollywood pals to call on to design the many myths that make up the story of Barack the Unready.
I think President Obama needs to dumb it down in the mass market debates. Not reach for intelligent cognition. It's all about appearance in this market. Easy to stumble. The classic example is the Kennedy/Nixon debates in which those listening on radio thought Nixon won, but on teevee Kennedy won.
The debates are appeal to the lowest common denominator. President Obama might even throw some religion in the appeal. Religion sells in America. Segue into common decency, do unto others, all of that.
Appearance, not substance sells in the teevee debates. A "you are not Abraham Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt" moment would be nice, but don't reach for it.
Gore is another example of theatrics, entering into Bush's space like a school yard bully. President Obama would never pull such a stunt, but I hope he chills, smiles, and keeps responses simple and to the point. America likes religion, simple answers and smiles.
I believe Americans resent being talked down to.
We aren't as dumb as some politicians would have us believe. I'll be satisfied if both candidates stay true to who they really are.
Actually talking about the issues in a substantive and truthful way would be a nice bonus, as well.
Probably true, but I was just thinking of those who haven't made up their mind yet and will be swayed on prime time broadcast.
"Actually talking about the issues in a substantive and truthful way would be a nice bonus, as well."
Are you nuts? That would be like asking Barack Obama to cut his own throat.
The kind of rash you have is gonna take more than anti-itch
cortisone cream to cure. Non-negative in mind, heart, and
soul to survive. Good luck.
So tell us again how Ryan can be a catholic and hate people
at the same time? Does he love a twisted cross? Seig Heil!
And yes, that's what happened in Germany.
...says the guy who's supporting Romney, who is running through a litany of excuses about how he can't answer specific questions about his own proposed policies.
Some religion? Such as this, James?
"The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam."
Of course, then the question arises of to whom does Obama believe the future belongs?
Program note: Tonight at 7: 00 pm, Univision will unearth the real truth on "Fast and Furious". They will give new details on the actual victims of our government's stupidity and criminal gun running program into Mexico. Seeing the human tragedy will put a much needed perspective on this scandal. This report tonight, the Obama Administration and his lackeys in the media don't want you to see, so please watch!!!
Obama, Time, and others in the media can't hide those bodies forever..Let's hope the victims get real justice and not just a bogus apology.
In order for you to understand the translation; you must be capable of rational thought, and understand the gravity of the horrible loss of life, that the Obama Administration is responsible for in Mexico. Since you're an Obama Zombie, you should just watch football. That way you can keep believing that it's just dead Mexicans..What's the big deal, right?
The blood needs no translation, James. It is all over the hands of Obama's myrmidons.
