“Welcome to New York, World Leaders,” Says President… Hillary Clinton?

As she winds down her tenure at State, Hillary Clinton is burnishing her reputation and her star power. Bright enough perhaps to run in 2016?

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton waves as she arrives at the 67th the United Nations General Assembly, at U.N. headquarters on Sept. 25, 2012.

President Barack Obama is sprinting through New York, planning to spend less than 24 hours on the ground and meeting one-on-one with no world leaders gathered for the 67th opening of the United Nations General Assembly. Republicans mocked Obama for spending Monday afternoon with the ladies from ABC’s The View and not, say, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy. But for the President, it was a calculated move just six weeks before voters decide whether to give him four more years. Why assume potential risks when he is polling well ahead of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on his handling of foreign affairs? Besides, world leaders certainly don’t vote in U.S. elections; and besides, Obama has Hillary Clinton to fill his shoes.

For a man who has hardly utilized his cabinet in his first term, Obama’s dependence on his Secretary of State is striking. As he and First Lady Michelle Obama reminisced about their first kiss on The View, Clinton was blocks away meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. She also met with Morsy and will get together with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he arrives later in the week. By the end of Monday she’d already met with six world leaders; by the end of the week she’s scheduled to meet with dozens more. In practical terms, Clinton is acting as the head of state for this week’s United Nations summit.

Who would’ve imagined that Obama and his former rival would’ve become such a team? It was just over four years ago, near the end of the Democratic primaries, that Clinton put out a television ad questioning Obama’s ability to answer a crisis call in the White House at 3 a.m. When Obama offered her the post of Secretary of State, pundits predicted that the ego of her husband, former president Bill Clinton, would get in the way or that she’d never truly gain Obama’s confidence. But four years later Bill Clinton headlined Obama’s 2012 convention, Clinton insider Jack Lew is Obama’s chief of staff and Hillary Clinton is quite literally managing Obama’s foreign policy while he campaigns and preps for the first presidential debate next week.

Clinton’s ability to fill Obama’s shoes is a testament to her tenure as Secretary of State. Few have such star power on their own that they can step up to that level. If Clinton ever chooses to run for president again – her husband on Sunday said he had “no earthly idea” of her 2016 plans – it’s weeks like this one that burnish her credentials. In a 2016 race, Clinton won’t be talking about landing in Bosnia under fire as First Lady – a story she later had to correct – but how she ran the U.N. for Obama and how, when domestic crises kept him at home, she traveled more than any other Secretary of State in history.

It's very simple really: Hillary is a work horse while Obama is a show horse. When Hillary was in the senate, she once referred to herself as being a work horse. That's precisely what the country needed in 2008. Pity that she's not the one running for reelection right now.

Redistributing wealth upward

By Harold Meyerson, Published: September 25

Which is the more redistributionist of our two parties? In recent decades, as Republicans have devoted themselves with laser-like intensity to redistributing America’s wealth and income upward, the evidence suggests the answer is the GOP.

The most obvious way that Republicans have robbed from the middle to give to the rich has been the changes they wrought in the tax code — reducing income taxes for the wealthy in the Reagan and George W. Bush tax cuts, and cutting the tax rate on capital gains to less than half the rate on the top income of upper-middle-class employees.

The less widely understood way that Republicans have helped redistribute wealth to the already wealthy is by changing the rules. Markets don’t function without rules, and the rules that Republican policymakers have made since Ronald Reagan became president have consistently depressed the share of the nation’s income that the middle class can claim.

Who would have imagined is right.  Imagined that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are complete liars and withhold the truth from the American people.

Yes, who could imagine.

As Hillary is scampering all around the U.N. meeting with everyone, do you suppose she is apologizing for our actions like her boss has for the past 4 years? Is she groveling and bowing to those who represent Kings and dictators?

What accomplishments have Obama and Clinton gained in the past 4 years Ms Small?  Are we safer today than we were 4 years ago?  Is the US looked upon by those in the middle east as friends and allies after the trillions and trillions of dollars spent, and the thousands of lives that have been lost?

Just meeting with someone does not make a great leader.  Actions are what count.  The outcomes gained during intense negotiations.  What actions by Clinton can you cite Ms Small that will impress the citizens of the United States and people around the world?  What has she DONE Ms Small to gain the adoration you shower upon her?

Has Clinton brokered a deal with Iran to stop further advances with a nuclear bomb?  Has she spoken with the Iranians to have them tone down their rhetoric of completely annihilating Israel?  What are all the successes over the past 4 years she has made that will allow mothers of this country to sleep well at night and not worry their sons and daughters will not be sent off to foreign lands to fight more Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists?  Surely there is at least one thing she has done in the past 4 years during her unprecedented travels abroad?

"Are we safer today than we were 4 years ago?"

On the merit alone that the war in Iraq is over and the war in Afghanistan is drawing down, yes.  Also could you have imagined four years ago if a similar event happened across the Middle East as we've seen the past two weeks, counter protests in support of the US would start popping up?  I don't think so.

Fill HIS shoes??? The problem is he could never fill HER shoes.  Oy!  More revisionist history.  Like a commentator on CNN just said, Hillary Clinton herself could not have scripted this better.  This week she is meeting with world leaders while he is sidestepping them to go on "The View."

OT, but Nate Silver has run the numbers again and Obama is back up to 79.7% chance of winning in November. This is only a fraction of a percent lower than Obama's high after the convention.  He also has the "Now Cast" as giving Mitt only a 3.6% chance of winning if the election was held today.

I've been waiting all weekend to see the Senate numbers.  If Tester wins in Montana (and I have faith he will), then Nate's estimate is that the Senate stays at 53-47 (though a much stronger dem 53 without Nelson or Droopy-Dog Lieberman), with Nevada and possibly North Dakota, Nebraska, and Arizona remaining competitive.  I'd also really like to see some numbers on the house.  Something tells me that all the freshman teasies in purple districts aren't nearly as safe as the looked a month or so ago.

I would just love it if Hillary ran in 2016 and have no doubt she would win. Yes the right would go into fits and can you imagine if her running mate was a black, gay, muslim woman???? They would implode and you would be able to hear it round the world

"In practical terms, Clinton is acting as the head of state for this week’s United Nations summit."  This has been the state of affairs for a long time.  It's about time that people noticed who has been running the foreign affairs show.

As much charismatic senator obama waa then, part of the reason he got nominated was also because lot of dems were against clintons. Personally i wouldnt mind mind being part of a history of woman president after a black president, and not just for the sake of history. She truly is an exceptional candidate.

I think timing was a lot of it, too. If she had won the nomination and then the presidency, it'd have been Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton (followed by Jeb)? Too in-bred by far.

Welcome Madam President Hillary Clinton!

Why is it that Hillary is left to do all the heavy lifting at the U.N.?  She has an exhaustive schedule of meetings, not only with her U.N. counterparts,  but with Heads of State.  I am appalled at Obama’s abdicating of responsibilities.  He was elected President- he needs to “man up”.  Every day I become convinced that my vote was wasted on a light weight.  Enough golf, enough chillin’ with A-listers, enough basketball, football amp; pursuit of trivial talk show banter.    His lame showing juxtaposed with Hillary's tireless commitment should forever change the catch phrase from “man up” to “woman up”.   Seriously!

Tocka-tocka-yeah-yeah, but why is Obama not stepping up to this challenge in his own shoes?  Why is he delegating such a critical role to Hillary when she is not running and does not need to look "presidential", assuming that these very charged international issues go with his job description as president and commander-in-chief?  Does anybody seriously doubt that Mitt couldn't step into this void?  That being the case, why not lead by opening the perception gap, Mr. Obama?

This is not too cool, folks.

HRC /Julian Castro 2016 or HRC/Booker 2016?

Substitute Deval Patrick for Booker, and Hillary would win easily with Patrick or Castro, or even some white guy. Imagine all the foamy lips having to get away from their Marxist /Kenyan./ Birther BS and re-program their hate, fear and resentment to being anti woman. It could be a campaign that would destroy millions of marriages, many of which probably need to be terminated.

I voted for him but now see that he is much more interested in celebrity than real leadership and hard work.. It is much easier to go on the View and be adored than face tough issues and ...(gasp) maybe have someone think you aren't wonderful.  I am so disappointed he turned out to be such a Woose.  I am sure I will be labled a racist for my opinion, nevermind that I am African American.

I am a reasonable person who thinks that in 2008 we gave birth to a beautiful baby boy with tons of potential.  In four years we screwed it up by raising him in this ridiculous cocoon of adoration.  The spoiling started day one with a Nobel Peace Prize just for ....being so darn loveable.   The result has been a lazy, arrogant adolescent with an inflated view of himself .  We need to face what we created, and employ tough love...expect more and hold him accountable.  Let's stop with the sappy adoration so maybe he can grow up and reach his full potential.

It is totally amazing to me how the Republican side can just dismiss anything this administration has accomplished with a nasty remark as though it will make it so. You show your ignorance when you post this sort of thing being that the facts shine a bright light on it and make you look like a cranky, inept, right winger who really has no concrete evidence that the current administration has done quite well in light of what your party left them to make right.

I'm really curious as to any facts that support your view.  She has almost single-handedly cobbled together the support for the crippling sanctions in Iran.  That in and of itself is much more than the 2 preceding SofS were capable of.  I am admittedly from the Democratic camp, but also have many friends from the other side of the aisle who feel that (even if they don't like the prez), Hillary has been outstanding in her role.
