The Race Card

  • Share
  • Read Later

According to Mr. Drudge and Real Clear Politics, I’ve advised the President to play the race card on the Chris Matthews Sunday show. I didn’t, of course. The question to the panel was whether the President was going to have to address what appears to be a growing racial bitterness in the country. My response was that he should. That’s different from “playing the race card,” which is a term I’ve never used–it’s a cliche and a bad one, implying a political gambit or stunt. Political stunts that involve race are obnoxious. But race and ethnicity are issues that the President has addressed with intelligence in the past and, if the current Republican dog-whistling continues, may be something he might want to address in the future.

I don't think President Obama is comfortable confronting the race issue because although he is aware of it, his life has been one of multiculturalism and he is not comfortable with racism of  an intensity with which he is not familiar.

I would not presume to advise him on the issue.

There is a growing and repetitive use of code words or dog whistles to the racist pack.  I think it was Chris Mathews that linked the regressives linking "Chicago style politics" to remind racists that Obama was a community organizer trying to help poor black people instead of the middle class.  Chris's MSNBC partner pointed out that the jokes about Obama frequently playing golf is designed to subconsciously link OB to Tiger Wood's life style.   Food Stamp President stands on its own like gutting Welfare work requirements.  They also like to call the President "angry" and what about Ann Romney saying "you people" to those reporters, nothing but elitism and racism.   These examples clearly show that the Romney campaign will stoop to the lowest denominator to get some votes.  OB needs to add this hatred to his Kill List.  FORWARD

Just read the comments on any Yahoo article that mentions President Obama, Michelle Obama or any issue involving them.  You will read thousands of virulent, hateful, racist comments.

This morning on CNN. Tea Party leader says Obama does not love America like "We" do. Refuses to define "we".  In fact,  I think she's oblivious as to how racist she is. SHe is unable to comprehend what she has said.

Actually, if you look at it a bit differently, you'll see that she is absolutely correct.  Think of it as though how you "love" your steak...I "love" mine medium rare, but my dad "loves" his well-done.  Similarly, this woman might love her country to be a plutocracy where the middle class serves no purpose other than to generate wealth for the upper class (and who cares about the poor as long as they stay quiet, stay put, and die in the most inexpensive manner possible).  She may also "love" when the neighbors wear pillow cases on their heads and burn crosses...who knows?  I "love" my country to be one where every person counts, everyone is equal, every marriage is recognized, and everyone pays their fair share.

See?  I don't "love" my country the same way that "they" do...whoever "they" are.  To me, that's just fine, because the country that they "love" is a sick, scary place (in my humble opinion).  And you thought that she was just being an ignorant racist.  How small minded of you!

Liberal live in the past??? LOLOL!! The republican party is stuck in the 1950s socially and the Bush years economically. A party of old angry white guys talking to other angry white guys

SCP,

Why do liberals hate white guys?

HudsonValleyTim
HudsonValleyTim

The larger question is why Republicans don't particularly care for you if you are anything but a white guy.  Sure, they gathered just about every prominant non-white Republican that they could find and trotted them across the stage in Tampa, but for what purpose.  You look across the crowd and see lily-white.  You read the paper and there are stories about racial slurs and inuendo, and throwing things at hispanic reporters and black cameramen.

So, when it comes right down to it, it's pretty comical that anyone would accuse the Democrats of being bigoted when many of the Republican elite were showing their twisted world-view on national television only 1 week ago.

PS - I'm a white guy, so I'll expect you to not hate me too much.

Dan5404

The one area where Obama has a significant polling deficit is white men.  That's because the bedrock of racial hatred is the large number of civil-war sore losers in the Southern and a couple of Southwestern states.   I know, because I am a long-retired white man born and raised in the South and many of them are among my friends...as long as we don't talk politics, guns or wars.   There is no way a black Democratic president can do anything except promote socialism and Marxism, especially if he's a non-American Muslim, bent on destroying good old white conservative religion...the one GOD meant to govern America despite what the forefathers about  mixing religion into government.  That's their view of the world: bumper sticker slogans and  out-of-context soundbites are right down their alley.

Don't bother them with the real facts you don't see on FOX.

Otherwise, they are fine.

Killing Osama, Killing Gaddafi, healthcare reform, immigration reform, repeal of don't ask don't tell, withdrawing from Iraq, equal pay for equal work law...and Romney's record in government is what? Romneycare he won't talk about?

And you're right Joe--Obama should take it head on. There is blatant racism in this campaign and mentioning it does not mean anyone is being a victim. Embracing birtherism with a wink and a comment here or there as Romney has, calling Obama foreign, letting surrogates call him unamerican, saying in his RNC speech that it takes an "american" to get it done, are all things that should be discussed in the light of day. The Willie Horton-esque welfare ads suggesting black people are lazy and Obama  is throwing money at them should be denounced as they have been. Romney needs to see that there are consequences for walking this path of appealing only to whites.

Joe, since you take comments and the coward Halperin does not-I would like to say to Mark that putting Eastwood back on the trail isn't some act of bravery in the face of democratic opposition and it isn't some democratic delusion that he was horrible. by all means, we relish the idea of Clint rambling and making a fool of himself some more so they should bring him back! The GOP constantly  tries to act like something that is, isn't. They were by all accounts appalled and embarrassed by the performance, but spin, spin they must. That is why no-one believes them. They never take responsibility.

it is a joke when I hear that argument. Every year there are pass over seders that are performed all over the world the recalls incidents going back 3000 years and the theme is never forget. However, I must right? There are people who re-enact civil war era battles all over the south to the cry of the south will rise again! right?  There are people still goose stepping all over the world waxing nostalgic over the reign of Hitler. There are people in this country today, who are working with every fiber of their being  trying to turn this country back to Jim Crow ideas, and you have the unmitigated nerve to tell me that my argument is old. your arrogance is not only disgusting, it is pitiful. You can shut your eyes and cover your ears all you want. I see were this country is headed, and you will soon.

In order to win, the Obama team will not only have to play the race card, but the class warfare card, the woman warfare card, the marriage card,  the abortion card, the dream act card, the granny killing card, the job exportation card, the tax evasion card, the job destroyer job, the UBL killing card, the Auto worker savior card and the economic recovery card.  And, I have no doubt they'll play them all.

The only ones using Race in this campaign are the crazy liberals.

Racial Code Words = Sht for Brains

The biggest racists in society today are liberals. They are obsessed with race.

Most conservatives are more interested in a person’s abilities than the color of his/her skin.

The loony left is the heart and soul of racism in the USA today.

The left live in such little bubbles that they have no idea what’s going on in the real world.

Here is an issue on race that Mr. Obama might like to address:

Black unemployment rate in 2004 under Bush: 10.1%

Black unemployment rate in 2012 under Obama: 14.4%

Change: +42.6%

nflfoghorn
nflfoghorn

The unemployment rate is a lagging indicator.

For 2012 you conveniently forgot about factoring in the 2008-10 recession, which pushed the black unemp rate to over 16%.

The black unemp rate is as of August 2012 14.1%.

So can YOU address why the rate has gone down???

It makes me laugh when I hear "Growing Racial Bitterness". The racial bigotry is seeping through the pores of this country.  This systemic disease is rooted down into this countries DNA. Don't make me laugh. You know why so many people hate the President? It is because he does not perpetuate any of the negative stereotypes that people are accustomed to. How dare he be educated, courageous and dignified? who does he think he is? How dare him actually being equal? I am sick and tired of these ignorant, backward, dishonest bloviating  tea party facist sucking up perfectly good air.

And here I thought he was elected because he was of mixed race.   After all, he had no more of a record to run on in 2008 than he does today.

Rod,

Your dreams are old. Like most liberals you live in the past.

If this country was truly racist Obama would never have been elected president.

The USA is the only country in the world to ever elect a minority person as its President.

Now we have found that he is totally incompetent, inexperienced, inept and unqualified to be president.

He has been a total disaster as president and because many Americans now believe Governor Romney would do a far better job as president, you think that makes Americans racist?

My friend you are a racist nut.

Rick,

You are expression your personal perceptions and opinions which have very little to do with facts and reality.

For example Civil War re-enactments are performed by hobbyist all over the country. Not just in the south. That does not make anyone a racist. You're expressing your opinion which is wrong.

There are as many wacko leftist in this country as there are wacko rightist.

Open your eyes to reality and get out of the closed minded bubble you live in.

I'm not even going to bother to vote in West Virginia this November. Obama is going to be lucky to get 40% of the vote there. Hopefully, my votes in Ohio and Pennsylvania may make a difference.

Mr. Vet. My reference to civil war re-enactment has nothing to do with racism it has everything to do with never forgetting. People always complain that black people should get over slavery. It is my opinion that slavery could never ever be gotten over with. No one has the right to tell me that I should get over the most horrific crime in the history of man kind. I assure you sir my eyes are opened with a crystal clear focus. Me being an airforce vet I watch the military channel as often as possible. Every day I hear and see about the Jewish holocaust of WWII.  i believe that is something that should never be forgotten. On the same hand the plight of my ancestors from as far back as 500 years ago should also never be forgotten. When someone suggest that, then they are not dealing in reality and are denying a truth that this country has yet to deal with.

3x,

Out of 23 polls in the last 6 months, only 3 (including the two by Purple strategies) have shown Romney with a lead.  Assuming polling is IID across polling firms, that is way beyond the margin of error.  If you drop the IID assumption and get fancier, you get Nate Silver's model, which currently has Obama as about a 3-to-1 favorite to win Ohio, even though the projected margin in Ohio is 'only' about 3 points.

Individual polls are of limited utility, but if you know what you're doing with data it's fairly easy to make significant predictions from aggregates of them.

After reading through the many right wing comments perhaps Joe Klein should address the racial bitterness they display. This is serious sh!t that hangs out there as a cancer. I see pundits tip toe around it and it continues to fester.

Why can't Joe Klein address it?

It happens every day in these comment threads. It is one of the rights main rhetorical weapons and make no mistake they use as a club to distract and cause uneasiness and mistrust of the "others". Today they are using the club dishonestly against you but every day they use it to degrade our unity and our future.

LiberalLies2012
LiberalLies2012

Joe Klein knows what he said.  Joe knows that Obama has nothing but his old tired and worn out slogans to run on.  Obama doesn't have a record he can defend.  His record is totally non-existent.

As this video shows, Obama is just repeating the past campaign slogans from 2008.  Joe Klein knows the only way Obama can motivate the base is to try to bring race into this campaign as his only, ONLY hope of winning.

Can we please get some new voices?

I don't think Klein was being clumsy.  I think RCP used purposefully deceptive editing tactics.  Look at the full conversation on Mathews' site (Linkstarting at 18:50), and tell me whether Klein was referring to "playing the Race Card" or "dog whistle campaign rhetoric" when he said "Obama should address it".
